I like to imagine this is a scenario where metal has been sent from another universe after unsuccessfully attempting finding amy rose in an attempt to stop the actions of the starved eggman of his universe. So anyways, furnace is chasing down Sonic and Metal intervenes, as he realises to beat both this universe and his own starved eggman, they have to band up and metal has most likely seen the future due to either the time stones or the help of silver, depending on what timeline this happens in, since this is my scenario i'd like to believe it happens sometime after sonic mania.
