After careful observation, I’ve finally unlocked the mystery behind Donut’s iconic ‘mao’ sound. If we break it down phonetically using the IPA, it would be transcribed as /wæ̤̃oʊ/ (wao). What’s interesting is that cats, like all animals, can’t produce certain consonant sounds, like an ‘M.’ So, instead of a true ‘meow,’ Donut’s vocalization is more of a nasalized vowel sequence (~) and of breathy quality, meaning it is a little raspy and husky-probably the closest they can get to a human ‘M’ sound. The ‘M’ sound was merely placed there by humans for the sake of onomatopoeias. Anyways, it’s just a ‘wao’ or ‘wow’ sound and of breathy, nasalized quality. not much else 😀
