Hovie Lister had a big influence on Jerry Lee and Little Richard to name a few. This album brings back great memories as a kid.

The Superlative Statesmen then and now the gold standard of the Lords Music. Jake, Chief, Doy, and Rosie with the best front man piano play Hovie. My Grandfather sang in the Lindseyville Quartet in the 50's and 60's my father led our church choir, and I picked up my love for this music from them.

My father was the lead singer with the Oak Ridge Boys back in the 1950s and he told me when they and the Statesmen were in the same concert event it was almost like a competition between two great quartets. I think this recording is the greatest the Statesmen ever made!

You are right, when I was a teenager I was in a quartet and was fortunate enough to perform in concert on several occasions with both the Statesmen and the Oak Ridge Boys! (Oak Ridge Boys in the late "Smitty Gatlin lead singer" and the early "Duane Allen lead singer" years!) I loved the driving rhythms of the Statesmen! I remember Rosie "dipping a little snuff" after their set and telling us "Boys, don't EVER do this!" Some great groups now, but no one quite like The Statesmen, The Blackwood Brothers or the Oak Ridge Boys!

MAN, OH MAN, WHAT AN ERA IN GOSPEL MUSIC, AS A CHILD I FELL IN LOVE WITH THE STATESMEN, THE FIRST TIME I SAW THEM AND MORE ESPECIALLY, THE CHIEF... ALWAYS ATTEMPTED TO SOUND LIKE HIM BUT, OF COIURSE, NEVER MADE, BUT JUST MIGHT GET A LESSON WHEN I JOIN HIM IN HEAVEN..LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING HIM AND ASKING TO JOIN IN AND TRY TO BALANCE WITH HIM, JAKE, DOY, ROSIE AND HOVIE...BEST EVER TO ME.....SIMPLY THE BEST EVER TO ME. I OWNED EVERY ALBUM THEY MADE AS A FRIEND OF MINE OWNED A GOSPEL MUSIC RADIO STATION AND WHEN THEY DISBANDED AFTER CHIEF DIED, HE WAS REQUESTED TO EMPTY HIS RACK OF MUSIC BY THE STATESMEN, AND HE KNEW HOW I LOVED THEM SO GAVE THEM TO ME. MANY WERE REPEATS BUT I WAS PROUD TO GET EACH ONE OF THEM AND LEARNED THE SONGS AND ORDER IN EACH ALBUM. THEN CAME A VERY UGLY LADY (KATRINA) AND WASHED THEM AWAY... ONE OF MY GREATEST LOSSES... LOVE ALL OF THEM AND HAVE NOT HEARD ONE OF THE BEST EVER FEATURING CHIEF, ABOUT JESUS WAS A BABE, JESUS WAS A BOY, JESUS WAS A MAN, HANGING ON CROSS,. WOULD LOVE IF SOMEONE WHO HAS IT WOULD LOAD IT HERE. LOVE IT.

Oh Lord, I love this. Sounds like Jake, Doy, Rosie and Big Chief? My Favorite of all time is Jake singing Prayer is the Key, but Faith Unlocks the Door! Those All-night singings were WOnderful. We waited with great anticipation for the Statesmen to walk on stage...their energy and joy was electrifying.

Mr. McCormick, I think these songs are great. I recall listening to songs like these as a child at Masonic Temple in Detroit. Very much elevated the Spirit and united some people together. Is there a way you could make a video of say individual songs like the favored melody hymn near the end?Or Get Away Jordan? If not, thank you anyhow.

One of the first live Southern Gospel albums. Statesmen never sounded better. Got this record at Walgreens as a teenager, and went to my first singing at the Boutwell Auditorium in B'ham. Heard Statesmen and Blackwoods...later became friends with all of them. I miss these great men of God.

Listening to this timeless music blesses my spirit as well as bringing back incredible memories of seeing this inimitable quartet performing in my hometown in my early teens. If you think it's good here you should have heard and seen them live. They didn't quit singing until after 1:00 a.m. hence the name of "all night singing" describes the concerts.

And each member of the Statesmen and Blackwood Brothers were friends of ours. Big Chief and his family took me to church with them when I lived in Atlanta. When I lived in South Carolina, I was delighted to meet and spend time with Hovie's precious parents.

Excellent description: Timeless. My family of immigrant parents from Nicaragua which came to the USA with 4 little children, family grew to 11 children, and we were befriended by a loving American couple who introduced us these Quartets, and all of us share such a love for this music! We played these albums so much they all ended up scratched, but we listened so frequently, we memorized the introductions by Hovie or James, down to the timing and intonations. We love all this music, and whatever happened on the "business" side of things, our memories are only of the goodness of these singers' hearts. I loved Doy Ott, my brother got a 50 cent piece from Jake (Doy gave me a quarter), all this in long Beach, California. Just a wonderful experience to be in those concerts. God bless you all. thanks for posting these recordings.

Probably the best album ever recorded by the Statesman. It was the first "live album" of southern gospel music and the sound with just three mikes is fantastic. Every song is a classic, and the harmony of awesome. Thank the Lord we can still hear this album on TH-cam!
