    Those side doors flopping to the ground are, imo, a design flaw. Looks like they got made upside-down but they made so many, they're selling them anyway - Made in China and relabelled. There are some nice designed ones out there that get it right, tho but really pays to shop around for a while.

    I noticed you have vice grips attached to the shocks on your hatch. Do you have to limit how high the latch goes? I have a Silverado and it has big tires, I was not sure if the hatch height is a problem.

      No that just happens to be about the 3rd set of shocks I have had on the canopy (no fault of the tent as was before I even had it) so I gave up and use vice grips. Lol

    I bought one used from REI for $108. I don't think it was ever used, because it appeared to be in pristine condition. No dust or anything on it or in it. The pockets, where you fit the ridge pole were nearly impossible! It took 3 adults to get it, and I was afraid the whole time of tearing it. Was also hard to fit the other poles. The site was hard gravel, and the stakes bent when we hammered them, so we didn't stake it. That night, there were wind gusts up to 30MPH. I'm hoping that wind helped stretch those tight spots out. I really despised the sleeves that kept catching on the poles. I still like the tent, but I did learn some lessons. 1: I'm older than I remembered being. 2: A 2009 CRV cannot be opened by the hatch from the inside. Keep your shoes in the car with you, or you may have to walk barefoot in 28 degrees in wind, around to the tent. A chemical toilet CAN be blown over inside a tent. Many more things. Still like the tent; it's got orange trim! Oh, and I'm gonna have to buy a van...

    • @overlanderbenny3789
      @overlanderbenny3789 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just wanted to point out that the 30Ah one is likely lithium, which means you can use pretty much 100% of it's capacity. The 114Ah one is lead acid, which means you can really only use about 50% of it's capacity, so it's really 57Ah of usable power.

    How do you keep mosquitoes out .looks like a lot of ways for them to get in .

    • @overlanderbenny3789
      @overlanderbenny3789 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It has a cord to tighten around the back of the SUV to keep it snug against the vehicle. There is also an elastic around there that is usually sufficient so far. My biggest problem with mosquitoes is if I open the door for a split second! I really wish the door could zip from the bottom up and remain attached on the side instead of it falling on the floor when opened.

    Great DIY. Some notes: the Walmart deep cycle (lead acid) will be damaged if it’s discharged below 50%, so it’s really 50AH unless you want to ruin it. Also the Yeti is pure sine wave 110VAC. Pretty important for electronics. Pure sine wave inverters cost a bit more. Still DIY is the way to go on these.

    • @kimmer6
      @kimmer6 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love the home built units. When something goes belly up you can fix it yourself. I built quite a few battery/inverter boxes and my drive is to cram more into a smaller space. Ain't cheap!!!!! The last unit I built fits in a MinnKota trolling motor box and has a 200 amp hour lithium battery inside. That's 2560 watt hours, equal to 4 of the 87 pound deep cycle batteries. There's no solar charge ability (yet) and I added a 300 watt PSW Bestek inverter on top held there by Velcro. But I can strap on the 1200 watt Bestek inverter if needed with a jumper cable. It can run a 4 cu ft fridge/freezer for up to 8 days before needing recharge. Lithium batteries are coming down in price but still a lot of $$$$$.

  • @John-gm8ty
    @John-gm8ty 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    it's cheap, which is nice, but... I'd rather pay to have a semi decent MPPT controller for better charging, LI-ION, because it's energy density is SO much greater and so many more charge cycles, an if you did a DIY pack you could have a KW of power in the same sized but lighter package. (which would take some time to save up for too because of the much increases expense) but all that is just a personal want, and has no reflection on your excellent work and walk though.

    • @overlanderbenny3789

      Yes I would definitely have it in a box vented to the outside if possible. I highly doubt it would be harmful in the van, but better to be safe than sorry. For the van I would spend the extra money for a sealed battery so no gasses can escape. The rest of the setup could still be used! Not yet! But I also have a dog with me so possibly the scent is helping there as well. It will seal up pretty well around the suv with the elastic and straps provided, so you shouldn't have a problem making it rodent proof. (Other than they could chew through I suppose...)

    How long does it take to charge it on solar vs the yeti?

      That's a good question! I've never really thought about timing that to see. I do think it takes quite a bit more to bring this unit to full charge though, as it is much bigger. For example I can watch about 2 movies on my 7 inch DVD Player with the yeti. This will easily run the DVD all night and the fridge as well. It has substantial more power than the yeti, no Matt what the other comments may say. I run them both so I can attest!

      @@overlanderbenny3789 Do you charge your lead acid battery on solar?

      @@scottboyte yes I do with the harbor freight 100 watt panels and controller kit. It was about $189 last I seen for the kit and comes with everything you need but a battery. I had to make my own adapter to charge the yeti from the harbor freight panels, but the yeti has a built in controller, so I go straight from the panels to the yeti. The harbor freight controller is mounted to the side of the box I made.
