Ray Barracks
Ray Barracks was a United States Army installation in Friedberg, Germany until it was closed by the U.S. government in 2007 and returned to the German government. Located in the southern part of the city near the industrial area, the barracks had numerous facilities. The barracks included a firing range for personal weapons qualification, an Urban warfare training site, vehicle maintenance facilities and various recreation facilities. After World War II the barracks were named after First Lieutenant Bernard J. Ray, who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Battle of Hurtgen Forest. Ray sacrificed himself to destroy a wire obstacle that was blocking his unit's path. The base was deactivated in August 2007.

I am searching for a picture of an old bar in Friedberg in the 1980's called Joes Fantasy bar?? Can anyone help me? My brother was stationed at Ray Barracks in 1983-84(or85) and that was a bar he frequented. I really need a picture of it!! Can anyone help, I know it's a longshot!!

I was stationed in Friedberg from 2000-2002 with C-co 2-37 Armor, as I recall, I was stationed with a Specialist Brett Ritzmann... come to think of it, I recall you having a particular 'dental' visit at the Dental Facility of which one the newly minted female lieutenant dentists accidentally took out one of your teeth!! ... great times, great memories. Was stationed there 2001-2005 with 1/36 Inf Spartans. Many good memories of the base and the town, and of course Frankfurt which had amazing nightlife and EDM clubs. I can't believe how overgrown the base has become, seeing the trees growing out of the courts where we used to play tennis is wild. The chow hall, one of the newest buildings on the post still looks good. I miss that chow hall and my omelets and biscuits and gravy, haha. What I miss most about Germany is the women, amazing, fun, beautiful people! I'm surprised the local government hasn't turned the buildings into apartment buildings or anything...seems like a shame not to use all that space on the south side of town. I'll have to make a trip back someday, great times! Germany is the best, even though we are separated by a language, the culture is probably closer to American than England is in a lot of ways.

I've got just a few comments about Ray Barracks. I was there with the 3rd/32 AD C co in 1968 & 69. Good duty station then, but as I read all the comments about what it was like, especially starting in the mid seventies makes me sad. I remember my 1st sargent ( E-7 Sgt. Boggs) would always tell us that the only alcohol he allowed in the billets better be in our guts. Things must have changed ( mid seventies I think) where alcohol, drugs were commonplace on the post. Soldiers will be soldiers, I understand that, but there has to be discipline in the service as well. Doesn't look like there was much left in the military. I was US but I wouldn't take anything for my two year service. To the ones I referred to as lifers I commend you and I thank you for your service and dedication to our country. Remember, a soldier will always be a soldier. God bless.

Awesome video, I thought the club was below the mess hall, nice post, horrible leadership there at the Ready First and 1/36 Inf, during my time there, was there for 9/11 and deployment to Iraq, I had to call an ambulance every time I had SDNCO, people would pass out drunk on the grass around the HQ every Friday/Saturday night...I was happy when I seen that place in the rear view mirror, and happier when they closed it down...now do something useful with the real estate...!

I was stationed there from '95 to '01 when I got a European Out. Met COL Tucker as his chopper touched down coming in from a field exercise and had him sign the paperwork himself. I would eventually help close it in '07 and then off to the desert for me, never to return to German soil. Most of us would go to a local disco in Friedberg on weekends or if we had cars we'd go to a disco near Giessen or down to Sachsenhausen in Frankfurt. At one time or another I had been to every military installation in Germany that had U.S. troops stationed on it, even the one way north of Giessen no one knew about. When Rhein Mein closed every Army unit in Hessen was sending vans and trucks as fast as possible to snatch up whatever assets the Air Force was leaving behind and they left a lot of stuff. I mostly snagged IT racks, phone and patch cables. It looked like the looting of New Orleans after Katrina in there.
