It's Everybody's Business
The vegetation of the Klein Karoo and adjacent Riversdale coastal plain area is unique. Approximately 4500 species of plants that occur nowhere else on earth are found here, in three internationally-recognised, biodiversity hotspots - Fynbos, Succulent Karoo and Valley Thicket. This, along with the empty landscapes, the seascapes, the solitude and the silence, make this a very attractive area for tourists, especially those from more crowded parts of the planet.
But the Klein Karoo is also an area that is water stressed. Rainfall is naturally low, but damage in the water catchments, and along the rivers, has not improved the situation. In 2011 therefore, the Gouritz Cluster Biosphere Reserve (GCBR), was established. It's a community-based initiative that aims to protect, and restore, the natural environment of the Klein Karoo, while at the same time, encouraging the continued, healthy growth of the local economy. This film sets out to tell this story.

Succulent plants are mostly found in deserts and semi-deserts. They have devised an amazing number of strategies to survive the extremes of typical desert conditions. About half the succulent plants on earth occur in Southern Africa. Follow three succulent enthusiasts in Namaqualand as they look at how some of these plants survive.

It amazes me how South Africa looks strikingly similar to parts of Montana in summertime. The succulent at 24:08 looks nearly identical to our state flower the Bitterroot Lewisia Rediviva, which is itself a succulent.

Beautiful documentary, I love these plants so much, to see them in their natural habitat is incredibly enlightening. Seeing their design to survive these harsh conditions and beautifying arid landscapes, all praise and thanks to my dear Heavenly Father, creator of these beauties.

Another group no one talks about but exists are the Nicolettias. These are succulents, which can move to follow trace water. Plants like Echeveria, Titanopsis, Crassula Ovata, ect. All send out aerial roots. These roots allow for these plants, to detach from the base of the main stem and set roots in another location. This allows the plant to slowly move, to a more preferred location. Taking advantage of light, water, shelter. It us more complicated than this, these are the basics.

It is unfortunate that these people were unable to identify the plants they filmed to the people watching this video. Less prestigious people have done this successfully.

Excellent, excellent video. I had the grand pleasure to tour these areas back in 2002 with some of the most knowledgeable succulent experts of their day. A trip I will never forget. The whole experience was life changing for me, and I ultimately moved to New Mexico since so much of the landscape was so simular to South Africa, although the plants are quite different. If you get the chance, take the trip, its well worth it in so many ways.
