I am doing some research, no luck far. I am located in Catalonia, can I keep chickens in my backyard or I need a permit, if it's for personal non farming? What is the situation in your region?

Hello! We are planning on living off-grid either in Spain or Ireland. Both have their different upsides and downsides, and both are in western Europe, so, not the easiest to achieve this lifestyle in, but many people do it. One of the biggest concerns about Spain is how they treat building in the countryside. I've heard so many stories of people who tried to build a house on their rustic land, or even renovating a ruin without a permit (basically, don't do what's illegal, don't piss the city council off), and it's not fun for them (basically, don't do what's illegal, don't piss the city council off). I know about rustic land so I wouldn't dream of buying a plot of rustic land and putting a house on it. But even when reading about people buying ruins to restore them, I see that in many cases, even that land has been banned from ANY further construction work, and so you may not renovate it. How do you find remote land (no immediate neighbors, as you say, "two minutes away"), where it's legal to restore an old building? How common is that, that it's legal to restore a ruin?

Ireland has much to offer. However, if you are planning to live there all year round, make sure that you are allowed to. They have strict guidelines for that.

Good thing you didn't choose Canada and I am saying this as a Canadian. The price of land is beyond stupidly high and the amount of red tape one must go through makes a small Spanish town's council look like they are your best friends. EVERY THING will be hours and hours away even if you are what would normally take less than 30 minutes driving in Spain. The traffic is overwhelming the infrastructure and all it takes is one small storm to create isolation that lasts for months. Cheap land only exists where NO ONE WOULD EVER WANT TO LIVE. That's why it's cheap and everybody wants to make a fast buck (a dollar not a deer... oh dear). 😁

I'll share a random anecdote! Like you, I had absolutely no concerns about safety when I first started living on my own in the campo. People in the village asked me "aren't you scared?" and I would laugh it off and tell them I had my little chihuahua to protect me! Still have no concerns, but one event did shake me up a bit. One day, I ordered a delivery of straw and manure to the farm. I couldn't be there at the time so I just left the gate open and told the driver where to go and where to dump it. When I got back a few hours later, the house had been broken into and various tools stolen, including a generator. I felt really stupid because I hadn't locked up carefully, I'd basically left everything out in the open and visible, and had told some random guy "oh yes go right up to the house, I definitely won't be there, you're all on your own...." Maybe just common sense, but be careful who you let snoop around your property, especially if it's not practical to lock up every valuable tool/piece of equipment every time you leave.

Hi Elaine! We have a dry toilet down at the maset (the converted stable we lived in before the big house was ready). However, as our big house was build with guest accommodations, we didn't want to challenge our guests with a composting toilet, so we've got regular ones... and instead we set up the system to reuse the grey water in planters. (which isn't happening right now yet - hoping to start doing it this summer!)

Hi Elaine! You'll always want to check with your local town hall and my advice should never be taken as gospel (I don't know local regulations for all areas)... however in most cases that'd be a no. People use stones to repair terrace walls all the time, without permits.

I have a WiFi box in my home and live in a small (population: 700) in rural southern France. My connection is less than excellent and there are a few wanting the providers to bring in 5G. The majority of the village is against it and I've been here long enough (13 years) that I side with them. There are always trade-offs in life and my income is not affected by my internet connection. A friend back in California didn't have a choice when it came to 5G and she is not pleased.
