David Lynch | Lights Out | Real Time Art + Ambient Meditation
Today I'm doing a real time, intuitive ink painting and ambient meditation.
I initially started this painting off as a metaphor for the severe, swelling headaches I'd been experiencing for the last several weeks.
Somewhere around the 30 minute mark, the painting decided it wanted to take a detour and I was merely along for the ride.
At the End, I was in full David Lynch territory.
Abstract. Fire. Electricity

    Learning about the squid launchers broke my heart. As a kid, I always wondered why the CGI launchers from the website's animations looked so different (much wider, sort of fan shaped - is that similar to how you remember the originals looking?)

    • @brianellisart
      @brianellisart 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Sorry for the late reply! Hmm, possibly, what I really remember was the design of the front loader portion that holds the squids. The final design has a sort of scoop cut out on the top that was put in to make sure the squid would flop out if it was pulled back too far. This was intentional because the further the squid was able to be pulled back, the greater the distance it would fly with greater force, thus, it could possibly rupture a kid's pupil. The original did not have that safety fail scoop, so when the squid was put in, it really locked in and you could pull that thing as hard as you wanted without it flopping out and, believe me, it soared across rooms and could totally put an eye out. While the prototype was phenomenal, I don't believe anyone would want their child to lose an eye in a freak accident and certainly lego would not want to be sued into oblivion. Really appreciate the comment! Thanks so much for watching!

    I find it insane that many ideas and designs were discarded or compromised. They ended up with models and figures that likely contributed to the decrease in sales. Bionicle is filled with so much untapped potential.

    • @brianellisart
      @brianellisart หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@CadmeanLotus I totally understand what you’re saying but I personally don’t see it as compromised. It only appears that way after seeing some behind the scenes process as every design must go through refinement to hit the budget. So the figure that comes out is the final design. The super cool MOCs online are not reflective of the design world at all as they are just pure aesthetic exercises that could never go into production because they’d be way over cost. Without a company or parent paying the bills, there’d be no Bionicle. So while infinite budget MOCs are cool, they are a false impression of “potential” because they’d break the bank in the real world of budget/profit.

    Hi! Question, how did you end in the Bionicle team/what did you study to get there?

    • @brianellisart
      @brianellisart 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I went to school for Industrial Design, which is more of a focus on product design for human interaction. But my portfolio and my thesis was more focused on Industrial Design processes for film, entertainment & design applications. This entertainment focus of my portfolio was all self taught however because that's all I did growing up was sculpt, draw, create rough makeup fx and make short films on my digital camcorders. So I combined my love of film and story with my professional design background and I submitted a portfolio to LEGO showing my versatility as a functional product designer as well as a story and character designer. This may seem commonplace today but back in 1998 there were maybe only a handful of schools (mainly in California) that had some kind of focus on entertainment. So my portfolio was... not necessarily what you'd expect to send to a toy company. I worked on different story based toys/teams for several years at LEGO and was then approached by the manager of Bionicle at the time to possibly come work on that team. That's pretty much the short version. If it sounds like it was an easy road, believe me, it was not. I worked my butt off during work hours and outside work hours to get noticed at LEGO and try to open multiple career avenues within the company. I detail a lot of this in one of my other episodes, if you haven't seen that and are curious, I'd recommend checking it out. th-cam.com/video/pNMUObuZK9k/w-d-xo.htmlsi=xEhXykp5gFknwN9H I know a lot of the bionicle fans on here only want to see Bionicle content but I think it's worthwhile to recognize the artist behind the work and to see their other art to get a sense of where their inspiration and creativity comes from. Could you imagine working with Lego again? I loved the aesthetic you gave to Bionicle and currently Lego sets just feel like boring, overly saturated slob.

    • @brianellisart
      @brianellisart 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Jesus_Wojak Well, I worked with them on many projects over the years after I left Bionicle and the company. Do I have a desire to work on Bionicle again? Not particularly. I am not really fascinated by toys so my approach was never one of admiration but always from a purely design driven point of view. There are lots of people who are very good at their jobs or professions but don’t necessarily enjoy it. However, I take storytelling very seriously as well as the design process. The translation of ideas from thought to reality and the procedure by which I get there is where I derive my satisfaction, and I take that very seriously. Lego hired me for my skillset, I feel like I did my job successfully & when it was time to move on and grow as a designer, I followed my gut and left. I generally think of my career similar to that of a roaming swordsman for hire. I’m good with my sword and very capable in my work but do not enjoy being tied to a “master”. Occasionally I’ll take a job here or there for money but I’m more content to just stand in a field, observe nature and let the background world and unimportant corporate nonsense fade away. I think if you feel strongly that the Lego sets are boring and overly saturated, I would suggest moving away from their product. If it’s a nostalgia thing, I think it’s more important to be honest with yourself and ask what do these toys actually do for you and your happiness? Probably more than you asked for but I prefer to give an honest answer than to give a fake one.

I tend to just go with whatever tool is available or crosses my path and more so if it works well with my experimental whiteboard paintings. The Kuretake feels good on both paper and whiteboard, but I think it's a more interesting tool when applied to the whiteboard. It becomes a smeary, oily paint brush and gives you multiple kinds of textures and effects as opposed to just whatever tooth paper you're using to give textures. Hope that gives some insight!

      I guess one could see it that way but I personally wouldn't take any credit for any other figure designs/parts beyond my 3 figs. It's possible this prototype design lent itself to some inspiration for future figs but I honestly couldn't say. I'm always going to give the other designers full credit and acclaim for their figures as they are all incredibly creative guys. that said, I really appreciate the love for these figures!

    Love this design of Nuparu. I remember getting him on my b-day as a kid, and being slightly disappointed since some of the other Toa Mahri designs were more popping and cool from a typical kid standpoint. But then I assembled him and appreciated how unique his armor and weapon design is compared to other Toa. To this day I think of him as the most tasteful and stylish bionicle. If he was a human, I feel like he would always be wearing a suit and a silver watch. 🔥💀

      Hahaha I love this comment, I really appreciate it and completely agree. I've also heard similar sentiments from other fan such as yourself where they thought he was a little underwhelming as a kid but many years later they look at his design with different eyes and appreciate him a great deal more. Your comment about him wearing a suit and a silver watch is SPOT ON! He's like a stylish spy/secret service agent akin to James Bond. Thanks for watching!

    If Bionicle can ever actually make a comeback, it would need you to shake things up and to keep it accurate to what it was at the core. It really seems you understood what it had, and what it could have been as well. I'm inspired to kitbash and attempt the process you engaged in as an excersise in respect for that craft.

      @brianellisart 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey thanks for watching! I really do appreciate the sentiment and comment but I can absolutely say that there’s plenty of excellent designers and creatives at LEGO now who could properly guide the series. Unfortunately, and this goes for every company, there’s always people with egos that think they deserve that “showrunner” spot and will inherit (not earn) that spot if they climb the corporate ladder long enough. It’s not a game of creativity, it’s a game of corporate political longevity. LEGO is no exception to this. It’s still a corporate entity out to make money no matter how cool their sets may be 😎

    I apologize for "spamming" your post. I watched a clip of the scene you spoke of from Wayne. The Conan character's lines were all quotes from the books. The one about civilization being unnatural and barbarism always must triumph is from Beyond The Black River - Howard. I'd say it's my favorite story, but I love 'em all.

    • @brianellisart
      @brianellisart 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh right on! That’s great to hear. I really loved the story as it unfolded in Wayne and seeing his father die and Wayne grabbing a Conan comic earlier on in the series it makes total sense that Conan fully manifests as a guide/mentor in that finale episode. Having not had much exposure to any of Howard’s writings at that point, I really dug that representation of him on screen and was happy to hear from Conan fans that the words and the character were true to the books.

      @@brianellisart You're quite welcome. I hope you enjoy the journey of discovering Conan as he is meant to be presented. I have little doubt you will find further inspiration in the books. I believe deeply that had Hollywood simply adapted Howard's stories, the Conan franchise could have rivaled LoTR and GoT. Most of Howard's stories are short enough to do a series. Then the stories from the other authors could be adapted to fill in gaps in Conan's "career". With all the exceptional source material available, as a lifelong fan, it breaks my heart that no one has done this, but instead chose to exercise "artistic license" and, to a purist such as myself, botched the world's introduction to Conan. Hopefully one day someone will carry the torch and do Howard's creation justice on the screen, big or small. I look forward to seeing more of your content. Stay safe.

      @@oliverklozov2173 yeah I totally get that, it seems to be such an incredible rarity in a studio system to get something faithfully adapted from book to screen. I’ve had several favorite books of mine translated into television series that just totally missed the mark & I’ve since adhered to the rule that these things should probably just be enjoyed in their original medium written by the original author. One exception to this is the thief/crime “Parker” book series by Richard Stark/Westlake. There was a 4 book graphic novel adaptation done by cartoonist Darwyn Cooke and he did such an incredibly faithful translation of the novels into graphic novel form. He stated that the books were excellent and he didn’t want to touch the words unless he absolutely had to for the sake of condensing the page count. One of my favorite book series and adaptations to this day. A high recommend if you’re into crime novels at all or at the very least you can check out the Parker episode I did which features a brief overview of the series.

    You'd be doing yourself a disservice if you didn't read all of Howard's originals. Then move on to the rest. I used to own a lot of the books in the link many of which are not bad. Sadly, my collection was lost in a house fire some years ago. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conan_(books) The movies, although probably entertaining to anyone who hasn't read the books, were so disjointed and jarring to me. I've been reading the books since I was a kid and still do. I'm 60 now. I read Savage Sword when I was younger. A lot of them were pretty good. I'm not a fan of the movies or the short lived TV series starring Ralf Moeller. There's too many inconsistencies and the characters are largely misrepresented in the first movie or drawn from other works of Howard and shouldn't have been there. The Destroyer is indeed even worse. They went for a PG rating. Conan is not a PG character. Mamoa's version started well, but slid down hill like a spilled vat of pig lard. I understand that was because too many suits got involved in the production after the first scene, which was great. The series starring Ralf Moeller was written like a Saturday morning cartoon, but Moeller was a beast and should have been Conan in the first place. Arnold could have hidden behind Ralf in those days, but got the part because he was the top dog in bodybuilding. You can also find the stories in audiobook format on TH-cam. I listen to the Cybrarian read them occasionally. Hope this helps.

    Presumably that prototype was eventuality revised into Vamprah Given the hunched stance & diminished hind limbs :) The final product is fair bit simpler than the prototype (Production costs are a big factor in what gets made so set designers often have to sacrifice detail to keep the parts-count low) but it's impressive how much of the core concept survived that process~

So every now and then I'll search it up on TH-cam to look for covers of the piece or any spins people have done on it. Came past this one and assumed it was a fan using the song for an animation they did, and the thumbnail was my kind of vibe. Never expected it to be the original source! You did really good work here, between the overall animation quality and the microadjustments to the music to tie into the visuals. 3D animation and video production is my hobby and hopeful dream career, and it's really encouraging to see something like this.
