    Yeah, I'll disagree that always-hybrid is best for all. It's project depending. Some projects you should be in the office 3-5 days a week to collaborate. Some you can fly solo at home for months at a time and be more efficient. Maybe you still call that hybrid, but it shouldn't be forced to N days a week.

    If a job is capable of being done fully remote, then it should always have the option for employees to do them remotely, until there is a special reason for them to have to come into the office directly. There are no excuses for this. The element "connection" is something that is of no concern for the business - it is personal, and should as such be a choice made by the employees whenever possible.

    We have 5 people in our team. They forced us to to back to the office. It takes me 1.5 hrs back and forth. OK. Please forgive my ignorance. If the employees don't need to be in the office to do their jobs (thanks, COVID!), why employee people in Western geographies at all? Why not just hire people for a fraction of the cost in India and the Philippines? It seems a bit arrogant (and improbable given the relative sizes of the populations) to assume that Western staff are just going to be better, no? Need to connect/create together? Great - do it in Pune or Manila. Fly them to your Western offices once per quarter to collaborate and bond with the roles that do need to be held locally (sales staff, field technicians, etc.) if that really means so much to you - it'll still be cheaper than employing people locally. I really don't understand the dynamic of all this.

    • @randeknight
      @randeknight 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They are hiring for a fraction of the cost. All of our new bottom level employees are Indians working from India. They might not be the greatest employees and the accent can be a problem, but if you can get 2 remote employees for the price of 1 local, it makes sense. I work from 7am to 3.30pm so that we have more collaborative overlap time.

      Outsourcing in a way you described is already happening. AirBnB was used as an example of this in the video. Although AirBnB described it as an opportunity for them to find talented people internationally, you can be certain that they care about the costs of employees as well. However, in many cases, proper communication is necessary, and there can be issues not just from the point of language, but also from culture, as culture (or "background") can create expectations that may be hard to incorporate into the company's methods and goals.

    Work at home should consider on a proper setting (ie a desk, chair, etc) to both focus better and not injure yourself. Not all of us have a designated space, so working in the kitchen, on the bed, is not ideal. Should the company pay for internet and office supplies? Regarding human connection, consider also the new employees, which need to know people face to face, maybe get the coaching they need, especially when new. What about taxes? If you want to work in another state, or another country, there are implications to both you and the company.

    • @sin5946
      @sin5946 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh yeah, and taxation is done by my through my own company. It'only a little extra work montly - tracking what I did daily, invoicing, paying my own salary or taking out dividents, talking to accountant. it's maybe an extra 30 mins/month. The company doesnt have to track your free vacation days, because you dont have any. In exchange ofc u negotiate a higher price, and u can have a day off whenever you need

    Free meal or meals a day would be a big one to bring people into the office. This might sounds extreme, but company vehicle carpooling. Fuel paid by the company, vehicle paid by the company 4-5 people in a set area would take turns driving so no one is burned out from driving every day. Also since you are carpooling when its time to go its time to go, cant make everyone wait for you cause the boss hit you with a report sitting on their desk for 3 weeks and they need it by tonight. Keeps a good work life balance. We come in together, and leave together. By far though Hybrid with 2-3 days a week. No need for added incentives as people are happy to not have to commute, or pack a lunch or eat out and save more money and time.

      Before Covid this wasn't even a thing. People went to work. They hated it then, they hate it now. But if you want to pay bills and survive, or maintain a lifestyle, you're going to sacrifice. It's what being an adult entails. WFH works for some companies, but for others, it doesn't. I don't care either way, I have to go to the office for my job, and for my teams, they work better in a collaborative environment, in person. We all hate collaborating via Teams. The online-only existence is going to be the downfall of society. Paying for gas and commute time sucks. But people have gotten too used to the Covid cashgrab lifestyle. Those times are over. The economy is in a shambles as a result of decisions made during the Covid mandate times. We are all paying for it now.

  • @Smogne
    @Smogne 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Your cons arguments are all (but 1) extremely fragile and have no real weight: - There is no such a thing as "losing human connection" - that just don't exists if the leadership is even minimally interested in the working format. I can say from 4+ years of experience on the model - it only happens if you want to and/or are completely inept on human interaction. - The "finding friends thing"; I don't work to be friends with no one (it does happens, but is never the objective and has no real weight on this matter). Companies are not match makers nor are they friend aggregation places. Unless you live in the middle of the jungle, you'll be meeting plenty of people on your social life. - There is no reason for communication problems. There is no such a thing as body language being needed to communicate anything real about work. If you need that, you should start doing proper definitions by text and plain language, like any proper working communication has to be. - Inability to divide work from personal life is a individual problem, not a inherent thing from the work model and has no weight on it. If you can't do it, seek help from a psychologist. - Human connection/work place culture/<insert buzz word here> for a better working environment is BS. Fits on the exact same thing as point 2. You don't need physical presence to properly work with some one. That is a fallacy that can't be properly proved... once again, it's a personal problem, not inherent from the model and totally tackable by a competent leadership. - Data breach is a real thing. But really easy to fix with proper technology and protocols. For some real sensitive things, indeed a on site moment might be necessary, but unless you do that 24/7, there is no reason to mandate constant presence on site. Hybrid has no value over full on site work (forced frequent visits to the office to be more precise. It's complete shit), as it eliminates the real benefit of remote: living where you want, not where the office is. Hybrid with forced on site days is a weak pseudo-compromise some companies want to do for no real benefit of those who gain no benefit from on site work. It's a thing born from ignorance and reluctance to change, even though on some cases there is a tangible monetary benefit for everyone involved. I can't visualize how "you are forced to come to work X days a week" vs "you can stay at home and come only when necessary" makes people happy. Going to the office for special reasons is fine, but coming because someone on management don't like remote is BS. Sorry, you properly pointed the benefits of remote but completely butchered the cons of it to make it look worse. All but one of you points is invalid... only the security reasons are legitimate and those can be fixed for a properly remote environment; there are probably more proper cons to be brought to the discussion, but you did not found them. obs: Sorry friend, but you are definitely biased... "gratefully to work remote from time to time"; "empower your worked to want to go to the office".... who really says/likes that? You sound just like the many directors and managers I meet who defended it with no real data to back their claims.

    Unlimited PTO has a huge drawback - when you leave, there is no vacation balance to pay out. Work for a company where you accrue vacation and if you leave, the company has to pay you the vacation balance. Most of these unlimited vacation policies result in employees taking LESS time off versus accruing vacation hours.

    So, it will make even more segregation of the petite bourgeoisie from the proletariat. The same intelligentsia, creative, elite, and bourgeoisie who can work from home would also get four day work weeks whilst the lower class laborers in factories, farms, service industries and on-site industries will still be working the same hours if not more. Those with much get more while those without get less.

    Doesn't work. This was tried at my company. Yes, initially people were getting 5 days of work done in 4. Then slowly over time, less and less work was done. The final result? 4 days work done in 4 days. The company switched to a better solution. The staff was divided into 3 groups, each group got every 3rd Friday off with each group taking turns. This meant 17 extra days off for each person, with minimal productivity loss.

    Reason for no trust is people putting their colleagues down in order to curry favour with the boss, there's always at least one in every company, they lack skill, they lack talent, but they make everyone else look bad by spreading lies. This makes the boss paranoid "no smoke without fire", and before you know it they're watching how long you spend on the toilet, flexitime is taken away, IT are spaying on you through your work PC/laptop, then the person who caused all this misery leaves and everyone is stuck with a boss who doesn't trust them.

You gotta do it when you're young because you're not going to do it when you're older. The first few years of working life you have to do the work, otherwise you miss the professional window in your life. Also, a bit of a wake up call: with all the developing technologies, such as AI and remote working opportunities (shock alert: Gen Z wants to work from Bali but they do not understand that they can be easily replaced by employees in places like India, where salaries are a fraction and staff is probably much smarter and grateful).
