    Which piston did you use in this project ? Normal piston has 2 rings

    • @ChecksGarage
      @ChecksGarage 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Whatever piston came in the saw is what I reused. The single ring piston was from a very early production 024. I actually like its piston over the newer dual ring one. Huge windows! Saw runs awesome for 42cc

    Looks good work. When you file the flwheel key, you can easily measure the advance. Measure the circumference of the flywheel, then say its 360mm then 1mm is 1 degree. Your arithmetic will vary but the idea is the same. So make a mark at a fixed point of the flywheel against the casing with it rotated fully clockwise against the key. If you then make a mark 5mm (for 5 degrees) after that, then that is where you want it to rotate when you push it anti-clockwise against the filed key. If it doesn't go far enough, then file a bit more, If too far, then come back to the mark and tighten it down. Easy way to measure. Hope this helps.

    Good work on the piston. Often a neglected area. Boy are some people negative! Those un-named aftermarket pistons are crazy cheap. I have always had good experience with the (genuine) Meteor brand which are well cast and the measurements are pretty true to oem. I find they're worth the small extra expense. Have you ever tried them?

    Man, your stihl is running really nice. The echo didn't run too bad either - even for a little rich, especially with that chain. I'm getting older, and I seem to be grabbing a 50cc saw more and more for cutting, and looking at smaller wood to load. I've been running a little Dolmar 510 which I used to hate, all winter. As long as you can drop the wood high, like in the snow bank, and off the ground, and you don't need to bend over due to the short bar, it isn't too bad. It is heavy for a 50cc saw, but I must like it ok if I'm cutting with it - real smooth. I took off the epoxy limiters and no more cat muffler. It is open port, so I'm a little scared to do much porting it, and it has good grunt. But, heavy compared to your echo. I have an echo 490 too. Maybe I'll clean up the cyl. a bit on that. It runs real good with a muffler mod though. It has cut a lot of wood. nice vid!

      @@ChecksGarage just from personal experience, I’ve tried both, on a 372. I much much prefer how a saw runs without hogging the transfers. Now all I do is some blending. More fuel efficient. Better throttle response, more torque, and a lot less grinding. I know a lot of builders like to grind lowers. I did too. I am stuck on the hill with my own work everyday, so I can’t lie to myself about how things run. There are other factors that play into making it run good of course but velocity over volume in my opinion. Velocity moves volume. Volume does not have velocity. Again just my experience, I’m no expert, nor do I claim to be.

    • @ChecksGarage

You can google timing wheel and print one, glue it to some thin plastic or luan wood and put it on an old drill chuck. Once you do it it's not hard at all... I am here becuse just got 361 kits to build and they are certainly different than the 44 and 66... Especially those transfers, and their tiny... Did you consider rejetting the stock carb. That might be an easier option. I'm going to look up the jet size on the 361 and see if I have a needle drill to open that up a bit. I do it on the 660, although I do not believe the stock FT carbs on the 660 need it. I run the oem walbro carb as well, which has a bigger jet, and cannot see a difference in that or the stock FT jetting. Thanks for the vid, got me thinking. I have to figure out how I'm opening that muffler, that one piece deal looks like a PITA.
