2024-06-18 Zwift ZRL Summer Showdown, Stage 3: scratch race on Itza Party (B cat). I raced again with the DIRTy Rascals Lazers. This was a new route that climbed the Hilly KOM and Titans pretty early before finishing on ~7km of climbing up the new road, so the pack mostly went hard on the climbs and then sat in to recover. Tough course, tough finish.

What a brilliant finish. Awesome patience and timing - doesn't get much better than that. And a veeery nice move on the descent, going off to the right. Too bad it didn't really pay off (although you got a bit more rest than the others perhaps).
@@MrPedel Thanks, T. I think the descent did pay off. I went from second chase group to second racer with minimal effort and made the guys behind me work an extra 2 minutes to catch up. With the finish just a few km away, that energy savings likely made a difference in the sprint.
Cracking racing Jonathan. Congrats on another podium! Great tactics there on the downhill and not burning yourself out trying to stay away after the descent 👊💪💪💪
@@MarkyMarkZwifts Thanks, Mark!
Great racing again, Jonathan, with some serious racing smarts. I would definitely have made two most-likely-errors, there. First, I'd have tried to keep going after the descent, and second, I'd have been spooked and made a move on that last wooden bridge at around 400m. Clearly you played it well and beat the rest out. 💪👊
@@lee-cycling It’s so hard in those moments to know what the right move is. I acted on instinct today and it worked out. Happy to get a good result to close the series.
Peer Gynt , good idea for this one❤❤
@@Taylor-Ma it matched so perfectly!
Awesome!! So nice I watched it twice!
@@doomguyzwifting Thanks, DG. I’m pretty happy with this one.
once again, hardy effort for the last km. very well done. You got the music perfect as soon as you attacked the last km.
Cheers, Doug!
Really strong finish with no compromise. Just going all in and say goodbye.😎 That's the way we like it. And the dramatic video is great too. 👍
@@marcorufer2342 I’m calling it cave of the mountain king from now on. 😄
@@appleseeds11the choice of soundtrack was almost as good as the racing, chef’s kiss. Wonderful
@@ZwiftyZwifter thought you’d enjoy the music pairing :)
Awesome! I love that you pushed on after catching the 2 leaders, it would've been easy to sit in there but then the pack would've had pretty good chances I think. Great win.
@@peymojo Thanks, Paul. We were so close to the line at that point with a bit of a gap to the pack; pushing on felt instinctively like the right move.
I watched DoomGuy's race on this course earlier, and his was the same; pretty chilled out until the first climb. I guess everyone is (or at least many riders are) aware of what's to come on this course. Anyway, fantastic racing again, Jonathan. You really know where to use your efforts and put in a dig.👌Super cool to watch. And that 5min power. 💪
@@lee-cycling The pace surprised me, slower than expected for the most part, but I guess everyone was saving their matches like you said.
Woah, that was awesome! Hitting the front so far out, and then still getting to the line before anyone else. A rare feat! Really well paced, and very cool being able to go keep renewing the effort to hit orange numbers when you needed to. Absolutely great stuff.
@@MrPedel If you check Mike’s stream (second place), you’ll see I got a gap quickly enough that the other two guys weren’t getting any draft. I didn’t intend to go right off the front, in-the-moment decision, but it worked out.
@@appleseeds11 I think it was absolutely the right thing to do. Once you’ve hit the front, you keep going.
@@MrPedel Agreed. I didn’t expect to end up on the front, and you see my power drop briefly as I realize and decide what to do (mostly assessing whether there was enough left in the legs!), then it goes back up once the decision is made.
Great racing, great job reading the situation at each decision point. Vershaeve was laying down some eye-popping upgrade worthy power there, guess they're not on ZP. 🤔 Podium feels like a win, congrats!
@@peymojo Thanks! You’re right, he wasn’t on ZP. I’m bummed I couldn’t nick the win, but it was still my best result in a NYC route. Progress!
Nice one mate... very close
@@doomguyzwifting Close, but no cigar
That 10% is the most hidden kick of the entire NY Map. I know becauss I got dropped 😅 Great result! Looks like the second kick was your launch 🙌
@@crankandsprints For sure! NYC is a tough world; there’s hardly any flat ground anywhere.
It's a rough course. Well done! And some strong riders there. I recognised some former A cat riders in the front group.
@@RideWithGerben Cheers, Gerben. I just looked at the ZP profile for the guy who won… whoa lol. Several years in A, then no races for 4 months, and now 2 weeks in B. Not saying he did anything wrong, but yeah he’s strong.
Fantastic racing! Even though you let that gap open on the second lap (and no shade, the pace looked hot), you used really great judgement on when to use your effort to close it. Just excellent to watch. 👌Congrats on a podium on a tough course and race.
Thanks, Lee. Just like the Brae, I have trouble timing these uphill finishes. Nearly got it this time, but not quite. Still, I’m happy to have made all these splits. W’bal was at zero when I *started* the bridge, so it was a do-or-die effort. Like you said, this course is hard.
Bravo!
@@doomguyzwifting Not quite the statement your win made, but I’ll take it. 😃
well done once again, so so close
@@doug759 Thanks, Doug. First place on the road wasn’t on ZP, so I’m calling it a win. 🙌
That looks like it was a fun race. Great and strong throttled finish by all you guys, there. 💪
@@lee-cycling Owen kept it interesting, better than the typical blob-and-sprint B race. It was fun. I was proud of the finish. Tbh, I probably need to do every finish like that! It felt like the closest I’ve gotten to Rob’s mantra of being at the front but not on the front.
Perfect. Surfing the fastest wheels until you became them yourself 💪
@@MrPedel Haha yeah it was like getting handed off from one lead-out to another.
That was awesome Jonathan, congrats on the ZP win! 👊💪💪💪
@@MarkyMarkZwifts Thanks, Mark!
Congrats on the podium mate, that was awesome, your sprint training is really paying off! 👊💪💪💪
Thanks, Mark!
Nicely done. Great job of closing down all those attacks throughout. Some really great efforts in the. Fantastic race, congratulations on the podium.
Thanks, JD!
How you are a B baffles me as we are in the same category, but obviously you are a hundred times better.. You might have been a little gassed at the end but you rode gutsy & closed all possible gaps/attacks that came along.. Congratulations on such a strong performance, Jonathan!
@@darrenvandit Thanks, Darren. I’m pretty close to the cutoff. Events that use the new racing score put me in A, and then I’m at the bottom of the heap!
Nice one mate.. just that little bit further forward or earlier on the sprint and it would have been gold. GG
@@doomguyzwifting Yeah, I botched the timing. Knew it even before the bottom of the dip.
Awesome racing, dude. Completely on control all the way to the end.
@@lee-cycling Cheers, Lee. I’m happy with it other than the final timing. It’s a good thing Arctic was there to cover for me. :)
This is a such a great finish! Well done!!
@@RideWithGerben Thanks, Gerben! Left it a bit late but fortunately ended up better than expected.
wow. That sprint is coming along nicely👌
@@stevej_on_a_mtb Thanks, Steve. Still not at your level though!
Wow, great sprint from so far back. So close.
@@doug759 Too far back! Oh well, I’m happy to have salvaged a result.
That was awesome. We’ll have to start calling you The Closer. Closing down gaps and then finishing the race like that. Unreal that when you hit 6-700 when approaching the finish, that’s just the engine starting to get into gear for the big numbers 💪💪
@@MrPedel Haha, The Closer… I like it, though it sounds a bit thuggish.
Beauty. Such a great climb, and race overall. Congratulations on the podium!
@@JDirom Thanks, JD! I really thought I was going to lose it at the end, but I guess everyone else was on their limit too.
That was a great race Jonathan. That was an immense sprint considering how fast you climbed Box Hill! Congrats on the podium 👊💪💪💪
@@MarkyMarkZwifts Thanks, Mark 🙏 I was hurting at the end but happy to have made it over the hill with the front.
Excellent finish and great video 👍
@@psouthworth Cheers, Paul
Wow! 🤩 Amazing climbing and finishing! 👊 Super strong riding, Jonathan! 💪 🚲
@@psymanj73 Thanks, Simon
Awesome riding, Jonathan! That's a hard course. You can't really hold anything back. Just have to go all in at Box Hill. Sub-7 on the KoM is strong. Then pulling out that sprint after a long finish when you're gassed shows great fitness. A well earned and tough 2nd 🎉🥈
@@lee-cycling Thanks, Lee. I’m a bit annoyed I couldn’t hold onto the winner, but overall it was a solid race. Can’t really complain.
That was a proper bike race! Quite incredible that you still had gas left for a finish 🫁 Nice timing on the music as well 👌
@@MrPedel Thanks, Thomas. It was a good race. I realized when editing the video that the three of us doing most of the pace-setting on the climb ended up taking the podium. That seemed like a fair outcome.
@@appleseeds11 you were of the front AND on the front AND stronger than all the other dudes 💪
@@MrPedel Well, stronger than some. I didn’t win. 😄

@@psymanj73 Lol, you’re not wrong. It might be the shortest video I’ve made. Think my weigh-in was longer. 😄
Heck of a good sprint for tired legs. Modulated the power well and ramped it up when you needed to.
@@lee-cycling I was proud of the power control in the sprint, staying at the front but maintaining draft as long as possible.
Losing the sprinters on the petit kom, how rude.
@@doomguyzwifting that’s bike racing 😜
Wauw, that was even more awesome than I had imagined. You stretched that pack like a sweaty harmonica and took them apart with 1,100w+ at the end. Massive! B is getting too small for you 💪
@@MrPedel Thanks, Thomas. I didn’t realize sweaty harmonicas were stretchy, though the quality of my harmonica playing is about as ragged as that peloton. Makes sense. 😄
What a performance! Great climbing, and then bringing out the watts on the sprint. Fantastic to watch. 💪👊
@@lee-cycling Thanks, Lee. This was one of my more complete races, in terms of race craft and power output. Too bad it didn’t earn a win, but I guess we can’t have everything we want. :)
Cracking racing Jonathan. Mega sprint after the 5min climb! Congrats on the podium 👊💪💪💪 Great music too, from one of my favourite films!
@@MarkyMarkZwifts Cheers, Mark. I actually haven’t seen the movie, only know the soundtrack. Guess I’ll have to check it out!
Fantastic finish, Jonathan. That must have taken some strength to pull off. A lot of high numbers leading up to that point.
Thanks, Lee. This result was better than I dared to hope for. Long uphill finishes aren’t my forte and there were some strong climbers in there.
@@appleseeds11 even more impressive, then! Though I'd be surprised if you're not being a little overly self-critical there.
@@lee-cycling I like climbing, but my build isn’t naturally suited to racing it. Most of the top 10 finishers weighed significantly less.
What a cool finish! Attacking just when the gradients go down is such a hard-ass move 👌💪
That was my only chance. All of those guys were lighter than me, so it was a tough ask to attack on the climb.
Great racing by the pair of you and your sprint is looking mega now! 👊💪💪💪
