Gibson B25 12N restoration, Step by step process
The video is self explanatory. This shows the step by step process of restoring a broken 1964 Gibson B25 12 string to fine playing condition. This is not a complete restore as I did not remove and refinish the instrument. This was an extensive "repair" of the fingerboard, bridge, top cracks and transverse brace. I did not include the addition of the pickup installation or pictures of scraping and sanding. This is essentially a fast run through of the process and the order of the process.

This guitar is for sale and available locally in the Philadelphia area. It is a very nice playing Gibson acoustic small body 12 string from 1964. The only addition was installation of a passive (no battery needed) pickup that has a...

This guitar came to me as part of an estate sale. The fingerboard was coming off as was the bridge. The top had 2 large cracks under the fingerboard extension and needed to be repaired and reattached to the transverse brace and the heel block. To sure up the area, I added a cleat near the soundhole and I added a popsicle brace between the transverse brace and neck heel block. I then cleaned the...

      A basic setup includes: truss rod adjust, saddle height adjustment, saddle intonation adjustment, fingerboard cleaning, fret polish, nut slot cut to proper depth, nut slots lubricated, tuners properly tensioned and restring. This costs $75 (on sale right now for $50) plus the cost of strings unless you supply the strings you want.

    Amazing guitars. I got a B 45 from 1963 in pieces. The 1963 and earlier ones were braced the same as 6 strings, and not many survived as the tops just exploded. I believe they changed to stiffer bracing in late 1963 or early 1964. I bought mine with no top at all, and when I took it out of the case the neck fell right off what was left of the body! Beautiful restoration by you.

    I've got an Alvarez 12 string acoustic that has a frozen nut with an Allen wrench-style nut that I can't loosen. It's got a slight back-bow that I would like to relieve. I tried to relieve the tension on the neck using a length of wood and a wood clamp in the center of the neck like another video recommended but it still won't budge. Not sure what to try next. I hesitate to spray oil into the truss rod opening to loosen the nut as it will soak into the wood. And I can't use heat also because of the wood. I'm stymied. Does anyone know of a water-based lubricant that will dry after spraying it into the truss rod hole that will work its way into the rod threads and loosen the nut?

    • @TheGuitarDoctor-zu3gs
      @TheGuitarDoctor-zu3gs 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@lornedey4040 your description is a little confusing. You say you have a back bow (truss rod too tight), and the truss rod nut is jammed and will not come loose. Is that right? If so, these are the steps I would take. 1. Remove the strings 2. Very carefully, apply pressure to the neck that makes it "back bow" even more. (this should relieve any tension from the truss rod). 3. While you are creating a worse back bow, insert the truss rod wrench and turn it counter clockwise. (Be sure the wrench fits the nut snugly so that it does not strip the nut.) 4. The truss rod nut should loosen. If it does not, it is likely oxidized in place or worse. 5. In this case, you may be able to use some liquid wrench a single drop at a time dropped directly in the center of the truss rod nut. Some nuts are hollow and the wrench hole is connected to the end threads of the truss rod. In this case, a drop or two thread lubricant applied in the Allen wrench hole and allowed to loosen the oxidation (allow it to sit over night) may allow you to try again and be successful. Good luck.

    • @lornedey4040
      @lornedey4040 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@TheGuitarDoctor-zu3gs Thanks. Will try what you suggest. And yes, I can't tell if the inside of the nut is open to the truss rod end. I had thought of putting a bit of oil in there and see if it dissipates, so it's good to know that it may be open. Also, a 4mm Allen wrench is kind of loose, but nothing else fits better. I was wondering if some use a 4.5mm nut. Anyway, thanks for the helpful advice.

      I keep all my 12 string guitars tuned down 1 step (D, G, C, F, A, D) and capo 2 if I need it tuned to standard pitch. It has been my experience that keeping a 12 string tuned down helps to protect the instrument from all manner of stress and impact damage. As for the strings, I use strings that last a silly long time before needing replacing (they sound great forever), Martin Retro (monel) Extra Light gauge 12 string set (10-47).

    I have a couple of pet peeves with acoustic guitars in general. First, 'acoustic' has come to mean slim neck and steel strings. I prefer nylon strings but if I go into a music store and ask to see an acoustic guitar with nylon strings, I will be directed to the classical guitar section. Second, so why aren't there any nylon string, slim neck (48mm or less) acoustic guitars available? The only ones I've seen are the cross over instruments, of which I have one. Surely, manufacturers could provide nylon strings on some of their guitars. I keep reading that you shouldn't put nylon on a steel string. I don't know why not. I understand not switching nylon (exp. a classical guitar) to steel. I've been thinking of getting a 2nd guitar but figure I'd just end up with another cross over. Anyway, rant over.

    • @TheGuitarDoctor-zu3gs
      @TheGuitarDoctor-zu3gs หลายเดือนก่อน

      A bit off topic, but I can tell you why folks "suggest" that you do not string your steel string acoustic with nylon strings. 1. Steel string acoustics put much higher tension on the top (soundboard) and are much more heavily braced when compared to a nylon string acoustic. So stringing the steel string with nylon strings will sound muted and restricted. 2. Stringing with nylon strings is going to require lots of modifications to the steel string body, like truss rod adjustments, a much higher saddle and a higher nut with wider slots. 3. It is not required, but the tuning machines are the wrong type for nylon strings and will not work particularly well. All that said, you can mount nylon strings on your steel string body but consider that it will need lots of modification and it will not sound very good.

      Unfortunately, I am a solid state guy who plays mostly jazz and classical music. I know this is an exceptional amplifier, but it is really best for someone who is looking for a wonderful overdrive/distortion like a blues player or a rocker. And having it just sit around is not doing anyone any favors. So out it goes and the money generated will go toward building a motorhome for my wife and I when she retires. 😉

    Hi Robert. You should find a local experienced guitar tech or luthier to help you. As I said in the video, all guitars should be set up for the individual player. I cannot be sure of your Lowden guitar problems unless I have it in my hands, but it "sounds" like the action needs a proper set up. This would include setting the truss rod and the saddle height and nut slots. Generally, a good action (easy play) is 2mm for the low E and 1.5mm for the high E when measured at the 12th fret between the top of the fret wire and the underside of the string. But that measurement alone is only correct if the neck relief (truss rod) is properly set and the nut slots are at the proper depth. Also consider that the frets will need to be at the same height (fret leveled), crowned and polished.

    I bought a new Lowden guitar 2 years ago. Its a beautiful looking guitar and sounds good but i feel its fighting me as i play up the neck particularly with bar chords. Also its good for fingerstyle but its sounds very poor when strumming. I have a Takamie that's 30 years old and there's no problem with bar chords anywhere up or down the neck. Is it necessary to have a new guitar adjusted. You would imagine the manufacturer would have it set up correctly. Im very disappointed wiyh this very expense Lowden guitar. Any ideas ? Check your relief ( quick and dirty method ) capo on 1st fret , hold down the 12th fret , and check clearance around the 7th fret ( if you’ve got feeler guages it should be around 10thousands or under , if no guages then you should be pushed to see the clearance but if you can see daylight easily then you have too much relief , adjust truss rod to put more back now on the neck ( basically straightening it , after that you could check the nut slots are cut deep enough , I could give you info once you’ve determined the proper relief , once you have the relief dialled in , check the action at the 12th fret , measure clearance again if you have guages

    Only thing I disagree with is aways buy from a store where you can play the instrument you're planning to buy. You are right. This video "assumes" that the buyer has found an instrument that they like. This video has more to do with checking that instrument for possible problems that might cost them down the road. As I stated in the beginning, a "New" instrument is not always "new". I tried not to point at specific instruments to try as everyone has different ears. The D1 you chose might not have been the same D1 that someone else would choose. I'm glad you found the one "you" like! 👍

    Oh man I haven't seen a road star in forever... Basically any Ibanez early 90's or before are my favorite gutars

    Only thing that I'm not crazy about are the v shaped strap buttons. I change them, but save the originals.

    Roadstars are my favorite. I think I have 10 or 12. Always come bak to them, because they are a joy to play.

    Nice video and great info. I am an electric player, but recently was given an acoustic guitar that is back-bowed from about the 5th fret to the nut. I could barely turn the truss rod nut a 1/16th of a turn to loosen it, (and did not want to force it)...This truss rod nut is at the head stock on this acoustic, so hoping by de-tuning the strings to release the back tension on the neck will work. If the nut is still stuck (or extremely hard to turn where you might break it), are there any lubricants that can be sprayed in there to help loosen the nut up? Thanks and very well done video. Yep, remove the strings and try releasing the tension by back bowing the neck slightly like in the video. Make sure you are turning the truss rod nut counter clockwise. If it is a one way rod, the nut will loosen and can be removed. When it is off, use some petroleum jelly to clean and lube the threads and metal to metal surfaces. Then when you reattach it, keep it loose till you install strings do that you can set it properly. 👍
