Exciting flight with a low save in the Modane / Maurienne valley
(Glider) Plane is a Ventus 2ct with 18m wingspan. joing me for an exiting 314km flight with a low save in the french/Italian alps.
In September 2023 it was my first day back in the French alps (since the spring) for what seemed to be the best weather for the coming week and with a nice forecast towards the Modane this is where i wanted to go. I only got caught out as the conditions in the modane valley were more stable and the southerly wind blew the thermals over the ridge making it look like the conditions where still great but were in reality not so good. this is where i ended up low desperate for a climb. close to an outlanding on Sollieres i managed to find the saving thermal that good me back up to past 3000m again. the road back was not easy either and with a tight final glide just managed to make it back to Sisteron. Hope you enjoy the video that includes my mistakes, thinking and paths chosen.

    Nice! So low in the Modane Valley it is allmost impossible to get out, due to the inversion. I would cross back to the south over the Col de Valley Etroite, thats lower and (i think) saver with that low cloudbase. But you could get out, great job! You took the right day to fly, i flew the next day, and that was with marginal conditions. CU, 2024 in Sisteron! EW

    • @thekruizenga

      Yes i also took that route because of a slighly easterly windflow so the ridges more north in the modane were aligning better with the wind. And conditions towards the west seemed more stable. Was not a great flying weather that week Unfortinately with only short tasks but enjoyed it non the less. Cu next year

    • @thekruizenga

      Do you mean the cloud at around 7min in? This was the initial one i was heading for but was to low to make the connection, here you often have a larger cloud cover often due to some converging airmasses in this case a stronger north wind north of the modane and a southerly flow in the south. Where you can also experience some overdevelopment in the afternoon (not this day though)

    Hi Sven, Thank you for sharing. I enjoy flying the Alps myself. However, due to work obligations and living far away from the Alps, I sadly don't get to fly there very often. Therefore I love watching videos like yours in an attempt to expand my own flying experience. I have a question for you about your decision of leaving the Guisane valley (option B) and head north (option A). Did you chose option A due to landing options (Aérodrome de Sollières-Sardières)? In hindsight, would you have chose option A following the west side of the south-north running ridge with Mount Thabor and head straight for the north side of the Modane valley to arrive much higher than you did? Did you plan on going further north from the Modane valley if the weather conditions looked good? What would then be the next landing option - Aoste?

    • @thekruizenga

      Thanks for your comment and watching. I wanted to follow the dark line of clouds towards the north but was to low to connect. Normally indeed the better route is to follow a more direct route via Mont Thabor or even further east near Bardonecchia but this was mostly blue. the reason why i headed east when in the Maurienne valley was because there was a slight south easterly wind in the valley meaning the north ridge was better aligned to the wind and not trusting the thermals much i decided this was the best option and was also heading me in the direction of Sollieres. if conditions allowed i would have gone into Aosta as that is a great part of the Alps but requires an altitude of 3400m just to cross the ridges and today was certainly not a day which was like that plus you need to be sure you can make it back from there.

You did a great job letting us participate in your soaring adventures. Keep soaring and stay happy. If we would not soar, we would all go insane! Hi, I would prefer if you would fitle your flight a : Soaring flight, not a gliding flight. See also the famous book of Derek Pigott: A handbook on Soaring flight. The plane you fly is a glider, but nowadays you rather soar like an eagle, than glide down to earth. Always happy landings and never forget, that every landing is a divine action!

      fully agree flying long distances especially far away from your homefield without an engine is certainly an even bigger achievement, however flying in namibia without an engine would increase the risks to much for an outlanding or a very long retrieve hence why you dont really see that. saying that you can never fully rely on the engine and you should still fly the same way you do as without but i get your comment thats its not exactly the same@@hedonzx822

    Gave vlucht Sven. We zien elkaar!!

    What an amazing flight! Are you flying your own glider, or renting?

      Thank you. Rented this glider, i dont have a self-launcher and to Namibia they bring almost only selflaunchers as its easier for the infrastructure

      @@thekruizenga What are the rates for those planes? Do you have to be a millionaire or is it doable once in a while for us 'mortals'?

    • @thekruizenga
      @thekruizenga ปีที่แล้ว

      @@blubb9004 Its certainly not the cheapest vacation but then again neither is going for a ski trip so all depends on what you consider expensive. what does help is going with 2-3 people and taking turns to fly as you can then share the plane rental between yourselves. For more information i suggested looking at www.kiripotib-soaring.com/en/ .

    Thanks for providing such amazing views of a mountain region famous in Europe but which few people elsewhere get to see.

    Brrr! 🥶Didn‘t that get cold in shorts at these altitudes, and your lower legs getting no sun? In a DG 300/400 that would be a different story. Nice flight and great video of course😊
