The Fall - Country on the Click (unreleased original version) 2003
Here it is....Psychedelic as fuck
The album was recorded at Lisa Stansfield's Gracieland Studios in Rochdale between December 2002 and January 2003 with producer Grant Showbiz.
The subtitle is explained by the fact that the tracks were originally scheduled for release in April 2003 under the title Country on the Click.vPromotional copies were sent out and three of the new songs were previewed in the band's 23rd Peel Session, recorded on 19 February and broadcast on 13 March 2003. Smith was unhappy with the mix and decided it needed further work, stating in November 2003:
"The frustration is when people embellish what you're doing. I thought this LP was perfect round about March. But then you trust people-them who shall remain nameless-to go away and mix it and it comes back sounding like Dr. Who meets Posh Spice. You have to go back in and strip it down to what it basically was."
The early mix appeared on the internet, prompting the change of name when it was finally released, to differentiate it from the mix he was unhappy with...

This sounds like a bleeding video game! Nice toy lazer beam sound effects. MES was right - Dr. Who and Posh Spice would be green eyed loco with envy. 😂 Imagine The Fall going into the studio, recording a great performance, then coming back to hear . . . this . . . It makes me chuckle like a good April Fool's prank.

It took me until I was 50 to not listen to anybody else and just listen to the Fall instead. I’m well pissed off! All those years wasted listening to people that weren’t Mark E Smith! I’m only half joking! Fckn GREAT band! Smith curates some pure artistic energy, not just for the musicians under his wing but for the listener aswell. They’re a very helpful band to listen to while “doing art” - drones on nicely in the background like a factory punky energy with the odd genius lyric thrown in. God! why did I listen to my peers when I was a youngster?

Awake, 5:12 am. Anxiety is attacking again Then I put this on.less than halfway through the album, anxiety lifted. I believe the Fall are capable of alleviating mental tension. Thank you Mark E. Smith, You're my Mr. Pharmacist!

I always thougt education
First-time listener to this, and it's immediately in like a bullet at #1= in my personal Fall Album Hit Parade. Psychedelic though? I'd say it has a jaunty-angle, foot-tappin' sense of rhythmischief, but then, I say that about all their stuff.

I read so many stories of Mark terrorizing engineers and producers and wonder if the older albums could have been better without him meddling with the production, then I heard this and I think thank fuck he didnt let them release this version hah.

It's like the Cramps, without the goofy getup. I can see the influence on the Talking Heads, The Cult (Southern Death Cult, Death Cult), Jesus Lizard, and maybe a hundred other bands that just let their instincts take over. I discovered them 2 months ago, and can't get enough...
Funny I can see the Cramps analogy now u mention it..I've been into the Fall from day 1 the Cramps since the 90s...both fantastic
Talking Heads first studio album was in 1977, so not sure about your analysis on this one
Don’t want to be tight but I don’t reckon they were infuenced by any of that lot, it was more likely Beefheart, Can and old Rockabilly songs. They fucking ace though enjoy

So this is the mix Smitty didn't like?...........A lot of this sounds fkn great to me. (Admittedly there is a LOT of production on top of several of the songs)
