This was neat to see. My brother and I received some battery-operated Marx train sets for Christmas around 1965. Sure wish I still had my train. It also came with an engine and three metal cars along with about 10 pieces of track to make an oval circle.

Great set box. I've got an 897. The blue marker lites are cellophane strips that get lit from the headlight. Marx was brilliant and economical.

hey! i have one of these and im wondering if you restored this model? if so i have little experience, havent opened it up and i was wondering if you have any tips or advice?

I've got 3 Hafner locos and some rolling stock from early 50s. I run them on my 8x7 and they have ringers too. Running them all at once is a hoot.👍

I have that engine flyer shell, it`s labeled 420 with a bell behind the stack where your hole is.

The Allstate train was sold by Sears. The orange and black makes me think of the Milwaukee Road.

I got the RR version of this one that I found on Ebay a month or so ago. Haven't really had the opportunity to get it on the rails to see how she works and the tender that came with it needs some major work. Gotta try and find replacement valve gear piece for the Berk itself.

It looks like Unique Art has a proprietary coupler design. I wonder if they had adapters for Marx and Lionel cars?

I have the same combo. It will pull anything and smokes like the dickens. Keep 'em lubed and clean, run forever.

"Japan" or japaned or japaning is/are techniques for finishing raw metal that dry/cure black. In that era it likley could have referred to a black paint with the depth & sheen of a Japaned piece of metal.

Very good looking set. Don't usually see a Lionel 44 tonner pulling a passenger train ... even though I know it was cataloged as such.

My ex wife gave that same set to me one year for Christmas. It came with all the boxes as well. I think she bought it from Train World. Sadly, I had to sell all my trains when we got divorced to cover the court ordered settlement to her.

It's OK, but the 44 toner was a much shorter engine. MTH made a more scale model, all Lionel did was put a 44 designed model over an existing engine.

Man rock island can move that engine is pretty as well
