Within each of those 5 EDCAG shapes, name and number these notes: E(1)-G(b3)-A(4)-Bb(b5)-B(5)-D(b7). After that add in 3-6-2 (G#-C#-F#). Lastly, use b2-b6-7 (F-C-D#) as passing tones. Once you can use all 12 notes within each of the 5 shapes, move to all of the other keys (ADGC first). - Play over a 3-chord Blues (E7-A7-B7), using those 3 chords in each of the 5 positions. Always know both the name and number of the note that you’re using. That’s how to master the fretboard. (Always go b3 UP into 3, a chord tone, NEVER the reverse of 3 into b3. 1-3-5-b7 are the safest notes, the chord tones.)

The crucial thing to understand with 8-strings is that power chords no longer really sound clear below the low A power chord. For palm-mute / djent stuff on the lowest string, you only need to play single notes anyway, and dialling down the gain also helps making those notes tighter. I mean, you’re effectively in bass range here, and who would put as much distortion on a bass guitar as on a metal rhythm guitar? If you want an F# power chord that includes the open F# string, I usually go for the 0-7-9-9 - since in that low range, octaves are pretty much the only interval that still sounds clean. You can also play 0-2-2-4-4 (including the 2 on the low B string, i.e. including the fifth), but even that fifth can get muddy. There are a few instances in which I’ve actually used the open 0-2-2 power chord on the low F# string, but it’s rare. Unfortunately, it’s also the very first thing most people do when they pick up an 8-string, and then they wonder why it doesn’t sound good - because they only apply the theoretical harmony lens to it, not the practical physical lens of note interference. As you said, it also depends on the pickups. Active pickups tend to produce clearer sounds even at low pitches, especially when the guitars also have an extended scale, like the Schecter Hellraiser series. ESP / LTD guitars, while comparable to Schecter in many ways, tend to come with shorter scale lengths (closer to those of 6-string guitars). I had that on my very first 7-string, a Jackson Soloist (also with EMGs). And while it is easier to play fast, it does get muddier in the low end, or at least compress the sound more. Playing through the Jackson sounds a bit like playing through a Mesa/Boogie Rectifier, which has less definition when it comes to the difference between palm mute and open chords. If you really need that djenty tight bottom end which so many modern players enjoy, you probably either need EMGs, and extended scale length, a Marshall JVM or any of the ENGL amp models - in the US, a 5150 / 6505 or Revv Generator should work, too - or a combination of the above. The Rectifier, meanwhile, to me is really more suited to playing open power chords and octaves, because then you have that bottom-end pressure applied to these open power chords, where other amps would sound more, well, open. Therefore, to me the Rectifier is ultimately a punk-rock / alternative amp, not a metal amp. There, I said it. 😜
