Anchors 2024
Anchors in Monterey are accidental artificial reefs. Let's take a look at two very different anchors: A sand anchor on the sand eroded Tanker's Reef site and an admiralty anchor in the cruise ship anchoring area. Anchors and huge piles of chain act as a home to many fish and invertebrates, like an oasis in a desert. Our 2023-23MPA petition to the Fish and Game Commission asks for a permitting pathway to place artificial reefs in Monterey.

Stephen, Scott, and Keith dove about 150 yards away from the Monterey Bay Aquarium intake pipe that is under construction. The old pipes were just placed on concrete saddles which moved around in the surge since the MBA was built in 1984. The new system uses piles to support the pipes with a beam. The noise is incredibly loud and there were no sea otters in the vicinity on this day. The reef lo...

When the kelp was healthy you could see urchins in large numbers moving across the sandy bottom to feed, it’s a foregone conclusion that not culling urchins results in an urchin barren…

Urchin culling at Tanker's Reef was halted by the California Fish and Game Commission (CFGC) on April 1, 2024. The "scientific goal" was to determine what would occur when urchin culling with hammers was halted. Everyone on the project knew what would happen. The urchins would move in and consume all of the kelp. In this case, the CFGC's version of science was about as innovative and predictable as doing an experiment of dropping a hammer on your foot to see if it would hurt.

Those giant kelps that are partially eaten clearly had urchins on them. I think the powerful surge from the winter storms knocked off the urchins and they have taken shelter in cracks on the bottom. When the surge abates they will move back onto the kelp and eat what is left.

Thanks Keith for asking about how we can have a quicker review cycle for kelp restoration policy. This meeting highlighted the sheer number of stakeholders for what occurs in the MPAs and along California's coast.

At the Marine Resources Committee Meeting on Thursday they laid out a new 3 year review cycle for changes. They will still have a 10 year decadal management review in 2032. So yeah, they improved it and I think that is a fair compromise that should allow flexibility of rules on a pace with the changes we see in the ocean.
