Inaugural Distinguished Windrush Lecture by Professor Sir Hilary Beckles
On Thursday 14th November, the University of Greenwich and the National Windrush Museum co-hosted the inaugural Distinguished Windrush Lecture, a special evening dedicated to exploring the history and legacy of the Windrush Generation. Sponsored by University’s Institute for Inclusive Communities and Environments, the event featured a keynote address by renowned historian and public intellectual, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, Vice Chancellor of the University of the West Indies.
The lecture marked the beginning of a new tradition at the University of Greenwich, celebrating the enduring impact of the Windrush Generation on British history and culture. It served as a poignant reminder of the importance of remembering the past to build a more inclusive future.
Titled The Lost Souls of the Windrush Generation, Sir Hilary’s lecture provided a powerful exploration of the Windrush legacy, delving into the experiences, challenges, and contributions of the Caribbean migrants who shaped post-war Britain. Sir Hilary wove together historical analysis, political commentary, and personal narrative to trace the enduring impact of migration, from the transatlantic slave trade to the rebuilding of Britain after World War II.

This is fun
I hope this email finds you well. My name is Abu Mahmud Abdullah Barbhuiya , and I am reaching out to you from the beautiful region of Assam in Northeast India. I represent the Syloti community, which boasts a rich cultural heritage and a unique ancient script. I am writing to bring to your attention the urgent need to preserve and revitalize our Syloti community's cultural heritage. Over the years, our traditions and language have faced the risk of being lost, and we are determined to prevent this from happening. In recent times, a group of enthusiastic youths from our community has taken upon themselves the task of researching, developing, and recreating our cultural heritage, including the ancient Syloti script. However, we recognize the need for guidance and assistance from experts in the field to ensure the accuracy and effectiveness of our efforts. That's why I am reaching out to, a reputed organization known for its commitment to preserving cultural heritage worldwide. We believe that your expertise and support could significantly contribute to our endeavors to revive and uplift the Syloti community. We kindly request your assistance in providing resources, guidance, and perhaps collaboration opportunities to help us in our research and preservation efforts. Your support would not only benefit our community but also contribute to the global promotion of cultural diversity and heritage preservation. I would be grateful if we could arrange a meeting or discussion to explore how we can work together to achieve our shared goals. Please let me know a convenient time for you, and I will do my best to accommodate it. Thank you for considering our appeal. We look forward to the possibility of collaborating with and making a positive impact on the preservation of the Syloti community heritage. Warm regards, Abu Mahmud Andullah Barbhuiya President -of Syloti Archive research and cultural centre . Email- abuabdullahbarbhuiya@gmail.com
What a beautiful presentation. So inspiring. Cannot wait to read these books. Thanks so much!
This was actually very helpful for me to understand audience/performer perspective!!
What an exelent lecture!
Excellent!
Are there other lectures by Dr. Mohamed other than this one on TH-cam?
Oh my! What an impressive lady! 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
Bullshit.
Bullshit.
Very clear and helpful.
Louise was always one of the brightest most insightful guests we had in our TV studios and left much food for thought for journalists and viewers alike at Yanga. I'd love to see her do more television because she's so listenable. Well done Prof. 🙌🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Thank you so much Tet...and it was thanks to you and Abbie that I was able to participate on Yanga TV. Would absolutely love to do more TV, but also to do something which motivates people.
A really helpful video, but this should really have captioning for d/Deaf viewers.
Completely agree Madeleine - you make a very important point. TH-cam 's captioning should be available to you. Press the cog button (it becomes visible on my phone if I press the video itself) and then select "Captions." Hope that's helpful - and I'm really happy you found the video useful. Good luck with your applications!
Great info .. thank you
brilliant lecture 👏

Investment in communities, yes, defunding the police no. Over 20 teenagers have been stabbed to death in 2021 thus far and the police are the only barriers to complete mayhem. The police are not the enemy, parasitic criminals who exploit and enslave young people are. Work with the police to make communities safer and help parents to secure successful futures for their kids.
