Chicagoland Railfanning Episode 5
Cabcar82productions and I took a quick trek out to Dune Park, IN. The point of interest in Dune Park to many is the national park that lies there, Indiana Dunes National Park. However I was there for an entirely different reason, that reason being a train station within the National Park. The station is apart of the expansive network throughout north Indiana and Chicago known as the South Shore Line which is the oldest and one of the last surviving examples of interurban service in the United States. The Japanese built cars are also a note of interest not just for their foreign style being suited in the US but rather how they sport the gong bell, a mechanical bell type that never caught on as much as the conventional North American mechanical bell did.
The bonus clip seen was taken from the car in Michigan City, IN. This catch was at random chance and I thought it would be cool to include. One important thing to note is what's seen in that clip is the newly built double main that used to be a single track street running section, what was once the most iconic stretch of track on the South Shore Line.

Decided to head out and see what was running in the general Lake Yard area. Luckily caught YPD51 on the return trip to Albina yard with a classic SD60 in the lead with a SD59MX. Filmed in December of 2023 On a trip to the east coast, I was able to spend a day exploring Savannah and it did not disappoint. Each train was filmed a year apart, had these two on a backlog. Both were filmed at Valley Catholic high school, the first one in October of 2023 and the 2nd one in October of 2022. Been really inactive over these past few months, will hopefully get back to Vancouver soon enough. Here's some random videos shot in Portland and Albany. That's a really rare shot! By the way, This is my favorite crossing in the whole metro area because the bells sound amazing and it has old RACO & US&S cantilevers. Also, the rare pedestrian signals with the vertical lights AND mechanical bells

When does this train run? Im looking to catch that SP GP60 soon when I head up there in the winter.
Most commonly runs mid day on sundays, they also run during the week but i forget which days. All I’ve said also is subjected to change.

Oh the memories of the interurban from Star City, WV to Washington, PA , in rhe early 40s. It is got scrapped to support the war effort in WW II. For a little kid, what a joy to ride! ❤😂
Very nice video. How many trains pass thru the station area in a average 24 hours? The military equipment belongs to 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division heading to Korea to assume the 13th US Army Brigade Rotation to Korea.
Thank you! Thats very cool to know who and what those vehicles serve! On average theres about 60 trains that pass the station per day. That number can vary more or less especially with yard movements.

Hopefully they'll find a museum for them. Since they run so well it'd be a crime to scrap them. Put a fresh coat of SP paint on them and put them to work on excursion trains.

PNWR 1501 was sold to BUGX and I think she went to the Oklahoma Railway Museum with BUGX 156. I hope BUGX also gets the 1852 and puts it there!
What is going to happen to PNWR 1854 since it's on the EPA kill list?
I remembered seeing the switcher first then the rock train combo. It had 2311, 2304, 1854, and 3004.
I'm gonna miss the exhaust beat from her 567. Same with the1501 in P&W's Albany yard. Magnificent old machines.

@@unionpacificfan9456 What company is that locomotive originally from? Grand Trunk? Canadion National? CSX? Speaking of, rarely where I live, a train with a leading GT locomotive would pass through, lately, I have not seen it, perhaps it got scrapped by now which is likely the case.
Hopefully they are donated to a museum, I'd hate to see these classic high hoods get the torch.
Unlikely unfortunately but ya never know, legally they can’t run after they get pulled unless they overhaul the engine
@@unionpacificfan9456 I hope this doesn't mean that short lines will also have to pull Alco's from revenue service in the future. They should send them to the museum in California that has the black widow SD9.
1801 has been donated to a private owner for restoration / display, I also think that 1501 was donated to the same people too, but I have no Idea about 1852, I haven't seen it run at all recently.

Such a travesty. Rail in the most fuel-efficient way to move things. Already with a small carbon footprint to begin with (for those who care about such).
The amount of locomotives at work in the world is minuscule compared to the amount of auto traffic on a daily basis. The whole carbon thing is a hoax anyway.
