Fineness 5+++ base + 5+++ tomo / My Best Japanese Natural Super finisher / Nakayama Maruka
มุมมอง 8K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Refreshing a vintage Tanifuji silver steel straight razor with the best Jnat I own! (With subtitles) I’ve been asked many times about my personal collection of Jnats. My “collection” consists in a single stone, a Nakayama Maruka Mizu Asagi. Previously to this one I had a collection of 18 other Jnats selected by beauty, mine and performance. Nice stones, but none of them would equal the fineness...
Straight razor not closing centered? Bent scales?
มุมมอง 3.1K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Hold the scales in boiling water for 5 seconds, they will become malleable and will be easy to give them desired shape. Then let them cool down. This method works for most plastic scales but some harder plastics might come back to bent shape after cooling. Hold those ones a bit longer in the water, about 8-10 seconds and repeat the procedure if necessary. I haven't used the method with bakelite...
NOS Iwasaki Tamahagane first honing, getting finished on Nakayama Maruka
มุมมอง 12K3 ปีที่แล้ว
In this video I’m finishing a NOS Iwasaki Tamahagane straight razor for the customer. All NOS Iwasaki razors come “shave ready”, but the factory edge can always be improved for sharpness and for a more comfortable shave. The customer`s preference was a Japanese Natural Whetstone feeling so I`m using the finest stone from Nakayama mine, the Nakayama Maruka! Some Tamahagane razors, like this one,...

Honing a Japanese kamisori, Stropping and Hair test
มุมมอง 4.6K5 ปีที่แล้ว
Honing or refreshing the edge of your Japanese kamisori is a very simple process! For this kamisori I chose to use a 3:1 ratio Omote/Ura. Stones: Naniwa 8.000 and 12.000. I am using very light pressure, enough to keep the blade flat on the stone. 0:00 Inoue Tosuke kamisori 0:19 Naniwa 8000 3:00 Naniwa 12.000 6:06 Use light pressure and make sure the blade is flat on the leather. Honing a Japanese kamisori with Mr. Morio Sakamoto
มุมมอง 9K5 ปีที่แล้ว
I recorded this video in March 2019 when I was invited at Mr. Sakamoto’s home in Toyohashi were we discussed topics like Mikawa nagura, Japanese natural stones, honing methods and the history of Ichikukai Asociation founded by his father, Kosuke Iwasaki and Nagayuki Asano in 1961. Here, Mr. Morio Sakamoto, at the time 79 years old and still working in his home in Toyohashi, show us the method h...

Love this! 😂😂😂
Do you have any stone like this available?😊
I do not have it right now unfortunately!
That razor is insane. I see those listed as high as 5k on eBay. If I ever hit the lottery….

Do you got a video to hone this type of razors
Sure! th-cam.com/video/5Z_u9tMYP5g/w-d-xo.htmlsi=eYx71ekBatYWP42n

@@zeth8300 You’re welcome!
What kind of water do you use to hone with?
Just normal tap water.
Nice Kiridashi.
Thank you Jamie!
❤wow beautiful. Tamahagane is the best
Any kiita colored stones for razors out there?
Of course!

Looks amazing, peace & tranquillity wish I could have joined you.
That would have been great! 👍🏻
What do you use to clean the strop?

I wonder why he needs a wrench.
Before honing the kamisori we first regrind it and we needed the wrench to change the grinder wheel.
I wish I could strop like this! You are so fast and skilled at razor stropping. If I tried to do this, I would have a massively chopped up strop
Thank you! With time it has become very natural.
I can only dream of a stone like that. I owned a very fine Oozuku that gave incredible edges, but it was lost in a move and the jnats I bought afterwards were not nearly as fine. 8k naniwa + Crox keeps me happy enough until I manage to stumble on another jnat that's worth it. Unfortunately ones as good as the Nakayama in your video are incredibly rare or insanely expensive.
Nice stone and moves here mate ! 👌
Thank you!
Hello, how do you set a bevel on a Kamisori? You do it on 1K or higher?
Hi, I usually start honing from 5k. With all types of razors. I go to lower grits only for issues that require removal of significant amounts of steel, like warped blades, or large chips.
Nice Fridor. Ironically i just enountered this bent scales issue on a Torrey Razor I just acquired, honed and polished up and restored. Good tip for plastic. I wonder if you can do it on horn or bakelite? Definitely wouldnt attempt it on wood scales.
Thank you Bobby! I haven’t tried it yet with other types of scales.
You can straighten horn scales but due to the "grain" the process can be a little un predictable. I encountered a stubborn set of scales and even clamped them down and let them set over night but the grain fought back and I lost..
@guysolis5843 i found this video cus of warped horn.ill try and hope for the best.
Do you use other stones before this finisher? When would you need to use something less fine / hard?
Hello Alan, I use an artificial progression ending with the Jnat as a final finisher. After that I only need the Jnat and a diamond plate to refresh the edge when the shave becomes uncomfortable. I only go to lower grits if I chip the blade and need to remove significant amounts of steel.
Hi, do you have a video showing the entire honing process from the bevel setting to finishing? Also, what indicators do you use to determine that the bevel is set, i.e., the apex is achieved, and it is time to move to the next stone? Similarly, how do you know when it is time to move to the strop after finishing stone? Thank you.
Hi Boris, I didn’t make a full honing video yet but they’re plenty of good videos out there and so many different methods to hone the razor. I recommend Dr.Matt’s video, he is great at explaining the honing process. I know when it’s time to move to next stone by the amount of steel I remove on each step, but that’s just my method. A simple method is to to check with a 60-120X microscope when you have removed the scratch pattern of the previous stone. Then you can move to the next stone or to leather strop.
@@ZenRazorJapan Many thanks for your response. I do use a microscope, but after all scratches are removed, and the blade stropped on both canvas and leather, it still does not pass the HHT. As a last-ditch effort, I resort to using pastes and diamond sprays, which I would rathre avoid. Any suggestions on how to improve?
You’re welcome! Assuming that you’re having a quality vintage razor with a good geometry, most common causes for that can be: too much pressure on the final stones, or the stropping technique.
@@ZenRazorJapan Tried to finish a razor on a Jnat with light pressure, then stropped on leather. Still does not pass the HHT. Could you give me some tips on stropping techniques? Thank you.
It’s difficult to say accurately without more informations, but the most common cause in these situations is the Jnat. Assuming that you have a good quality razor, a good honing technique and a quality leather strop, then the Jnat might not be fine enough to put a super sharp edge. If the Jnat is superfine, meant to be used as a final finisher for razors, then the cause might be one of the others listed above.
Great video and easy to do method, thanks 🙏👍
Thank you! 🙏🏻😊
Are you literally just letting the whole blade rest on the stone as you're moving it back and forth? I just ordered my first kamisori
I’m just holding it in position, without much pressure.
Meserie. Tot respectul!
Mersi! 🙏🏻
My back pain is aching again watching this....
what a gorgeous blade. Always nice to see high quality gear taken care of professionally.
excellent content, I’ve use a hair dryer too with success but boiling water works best. regards dapper shaves
Great job!

I can'take out your design, is that ' Hamon' hardened area?
The bright part is Hagane, the hard steel, the steel that cuts, in this case blue steel. And the grey part is the Jigane or the soft steel the wraps the Hagane. Hamon is the contrast between them
Beautiful Nakayama Maruka and Tomo Flo. Truly enjoy your honing videos and great to your best stone in action! Is the Tomo also a Nakayama Maruka?
Thank you Darcy! I’m glad that you like them! The stone from which I cut this tomo didn’t had any visible stamps at the time. It was an impressive piece. The shape was irregular, but the fineness, cutting power, hardness, feedback, color, everything was perfect.
I like your honing videos a lot and the JNAT as well, is it on sale? By the way, could you make a honing video using full Naniwa super stones progression? Do you normally put tape on the spine of razors when honing? Do you recommend using it? Congratulations for your videos, they are very relaxing and helpful.
Hello Felix, This is my personal Jnat. The one and only: instagram.com/p/CjzxAiKpN4P/?igshid=MDJmNzVkMjY= A full honing process is a good idea, but not sure if I can do it this year. I’ll definitely put it on my to do list 👍🏻 Normally I don’t use tape, except in some very rare cases where I have to remove a chip or the customer let me know in advance. To refresh the razor or when honing a NOS for the first time the wear is barely visible. Using tape is a personal preference. If you want to use it, then I recommend to use Kapton tape. It’s more resistant at wear than electric tape and very thin, does not affect the angle of the edge. Thank you very much! I’m glad that you’re finding my work helpful! 🙏🏻
You only use leather to strop and no canvas?
Yes, leather only.
That hht is fantastic. :)
Just like the shave! ☺️

So I have an antique straight razor with cellulose scales and they are crazy warped. So I figure this may take several times of the thermocycle process you're doing in this video hopefully this will work and I'm able to straighten them out
I haven’t tried yet with other materials, like cellulose, but some materials are harder to bring back the shape.
