    I think I got lost with the visuals in the episode. I was so fixated on Asher walking on the ceiling. I kept turning my laptop screen upside down and back to look at it from both perspectives. I felt bad for Asher in the end. I don't like the way Dougie betrayed him, cursed him, and then recorded his demise. Asher seemed like he was really turning himself around, and Dougie just seemed so consumed by guilt over his wife that he had to keep lashing out at Asher in jealousy for having a loving marriage and a baby on the way. I wish there were more characters like Asher. His cringe moments just felt so real and refreshing compared to so many characters in TV that are just written to always be quick and witty.

    I thought the scene where Asher and Whitney were holding each other in mid air was perfect symbolism of their relationship. Asher is constantly trying to bring Whitney up, she’s above him and he practically views her as a Godess. Meanwhile, she’s just bringing him down, ultimately what she tries to do most of the episode and a representation of how she treats their relationship. Also, Nathan Fielder came out the gate as a great director. The voyeuristic atmosphere of the show is superb and Fielder really has a knack for framing, precise camera movements, and of course… his signature cringe. I also thought it was the perfect collaboration between Benny and Nathan. Visually the film looked a lot like the Safdie Bros. signature style, as well as their unique sound design. However, instead of the anxiety coming from hectic dialogue, intimate close-ups, and lots of camera movements, Fielder uses his tactics at evoking anxiety through his uncomfortable dialogue/acting and, as stated, voyeuristic direction. What a fantastic show. Edit: If you watch it upside down, it totally makes sense that they made a perfect, upside-down replica of the house.

    • @Cinecorner7
      @Cinecorner7 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I SOO AGREE with that, when Whitney holds onto him, they balance out, but when Moses (who has much more mass than Whitney) almost flies away with Asher, the way they held that shot of Whitney and Asher floating in the air also made it feel like it has pretty strong significance. As for Nathan Fielder being a great director, so damn true, with the rehearsal and now this, what a talented guy honestly. I really hope we see more collaborations with Safdie and Fielder, Safdie explained how hes coming from the side of trying to turn fiction into a reality and Fielder coming from trying to turn reality into fiction so when they meet in the middle, it's just such original TV.

    • @nickabenson
      @nickabenson 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I appreciate the comments on this video. For my part, I’ll say that this was a very stressful episode of TV, in a good way. I think the fact that the episode is so Asher-centric, compared to the rest of the series having him be second fiddle to Whitney, might indicate that this is some kind of exploration of his inner world. He feels that the baby is going to replace him in Whitney’s eyes, and his tenuous grasp on reality and humanity is going to slip even more. Edit: I also just realized that he couldn’t get his phone, showing that he couldn’t connect to anybody

    • @yt.byliam

    Found a Reddit comment that gives a pretty interesting analysis: Asher says to Whitney "There's a little me inside you". One of the last things he ever says to her is "Waah, I'm a baby". The doula delivers him from the safety of the house (womb) to the danger of the world. The branch (umbilical cord) is cut, and we get the scene of him flying off into space intercut with the baby being born as he curls up into the foetal position. The Hindu? chants representing reincarnation, [Asher's rebirth], etc. [Some] complain about Whitney getting a happy ending while Asher dies even though Whitney was as bad as Asher all along, but [they're] missing the point that really she hasn't escaped him. And thematically it ties into the well-intended rejuvenation/reincarnation of Española that was more insidious beneath the surface. (Source: /u/epicmarc)

    • @Cinecorner7
      @Cinecorner7 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yea, the intercutting between Asher and the child being born really left the impression that theyre connected, and omg I didnt even make the connection that he flies away in the fetal position!!! And also the way it was shot I think its a pretty clear ode to 2001, except in 2001 its a baby thats flying through space further implying (I think) the connection between Asher and Whitney's newborn child.

    I would love to see a video that explores all of the different possible theories of what happened in the finale. I think it is left open-ended to allow for almost any interpretation to work, because there are no concrete answers that could be used to debunk an interpretation.

      @@Cinecorner7 The fan reaction reminds me of the "Who Shot J.R." season finale the of Dallas TV show (Which also turned out to be a dream). That show caused a near-nation-wide breakdown across the US with people feuding about "whodunnit". Too bad the Curse is not nearly as popular. Nevertheless, I do think the Curse fandom should rally around the dream interpretation for two reasons: 1) Don't we want a season 2 and one with Asher in it? 2) If Asher really was "cursed" then Nala is the most likely culprit. Further promoting the "Magic Negro" trope. A sentiment that I think the show rails against thru Cara. So let's not eat that turkey. Also, the dream theory does not in any way diminish the Lynchian-Felinniesque elegance of the episode. In fact, dream sequences are well-established vehicles for driving home those unmoored feelings of wonder we all felt afterward.

    • @nickabenson
      @nickabenson 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think there are other curse interpretations like the idea that it was Dougie's curse, a curse from the land itself, the idea that if you believe in a curse that it can become real, etc. The show does a good job of providing a lot of alternate sources for the curse that don't require Nala to have actually cursed him.@@Stress-Free-K

    • @Stress-Free-K
      @Stress-Free-K 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@nickabenson Yes. And Dougie's crying after watching Asher fly up into the air could be seen as an admission of guilt. But I think it is more likely that Dougie feels more guilty for just not believing Asher in the first place. Especially after Asher so convincingly pleaded with him to be believed. And yes Asher did say I curse you to Asher. But that seemed more like him trying to be mean after Asher shamed him about his wife's death. Plus, Asher was on his knees in tears begging Nala to curse him. So I don't think Dougie even thinks he has that ability. So why should we? However, the land having cursed Asher isn't something I've noticed developed in the show. Would you be so kind as to provide some instances to support that theory?

    • @nickabenson
      @nickabenson 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The show talks a lot about the idea that the ownership of the land in that area is contested, and that it truly belongs to the Native American people who have lived there for ages. Whitney and Asher claim to deeply care about this issue, but it is presented to the audience that this care is more superficial than anything. They are trying to exploit the land for their own gain. Whitney is doing it to stroke her own ego. Asher is doing it to try and please Whitney. I could imagine the curse being a retaliation of the land itself against them in an effort to stop the show. Remember Dougie specifically said that Asher was a necessary component for the show to continue. Also Asher's curse is that the land literally pushes him away, preventing him from touching it. What are your thoughts on this land curse theory? There are honestly endless interpretations.@@Stress-Free-K

    If we accept that many months have passed and Whitney is about to give birth. Then I agree with you. The only way the finale makes sense is if Asher is dreaming. Cuz only in his own mind could he be sooo sensitive, un-cringy, philosophical and heroic. Others theorize that there really is a curse. And that theory makes me noxious on a number of levels.

Another interesting thing someone pointed out and I cant get out of my head was that Asher said in the episode "sometimes you gotta go to extreme lengths to make your point" which might tie into the ending being also very extreme to make a point about Ashers and Whitneys relationship in reality.

Your noting of the 2001: Space Odessey moment was right on point with his perceptions. He also highlights the "extreme lengths" remark. And because this show is so meta that, floating your main character off into the vastness of space certainly qualifies as extreme. I actually think Dougie was right. Asher is having a panic attack about being a father. And either is dreaming up the entire episode. Or at least having a panic attack which manifests in his mind as no longer being able to be acknowledged by the entire world, literally. Further extending Asher's perception that sometimes he's invisible to people. Now gravity refuses to accept his existence. So Whitney has to end up calling the doula and paramedics cuz Asher chases himself up a tree. And once the branch is cut he loses consciousness and eventually is brought to the hospital for observation.

      You know what I found odd was Dougie talking to the firefighter which at first I thought of as a comedic moment, but he says "weird when I see my friend up there like that, who's nothing like my dad you know he's a good guy, Asher.." and the way he delivers this line feels so forced and open for Dougie to say, which makes me further question of whether its real or its Asher's imagination. Maybe I'm reading a little bit too much into it, but yeah it really feels like this is what Asher would hope in his imagination Dougie would say about him :D @@Stress-Free-K

      @@Cinecorner7 Asher's cool, uncringy, and relatively cleaver demeanor on Rachel Ray seemed out of character. He also gave away a house where he invested $200k and did not blink an eye when Abshir seemed annoyed at the offer. And his deep, incisive comments at the Shabbat dinner also feel like Asher cosplaying who he'd like to be. Similar to his kinky sex talk Whitney was privileged to overhear. But you're right. Ash doesn't realize Dougie doesn't have much respect for him. So it makes sense in Asher's dream Dougie would have bizarre complimentary things to say that make little sense.

      @@Cinecorner7it's definitely real. he vanished from the face of the earth on the day of his baby's birth. Whitney was now forever a Siegel and he fulfilled his purpose. she wanted him gone and gone he went; per his passionate plea on the bed after viewing the tape. there was a reason the father didn't want anyone talking about curses with the girl cuz clearly she has power.

    Not wrong! 😂 I gave it a pass because I loved the movie overall, but yeah the line he delivered felt too campy for a serious scientific drama. Like then He and Einstein grab a pair of budwisers and shotguns "And now its time to roll out" About him being there though, I was more perplexed that his friends were watching him strike out with Jean than I was about Einstein walking by his front door. He probably knew he was going through a tough time and saw him saying bye to his guests, thought he would swing by and reassure him. They both lived nearby, that part didn't bother me whatsoever.

    This video got much more views than anticipated, so to give more context I like to think that this encounter between them wasn't written to be presented like this, but Oppenheimer had a notoriously short shooting schedule, so I can see them being like yeah lets have Tom Conti (the actor playing Einstein) on set for this scene so we can tie these two together just because its a 3 hour picture (with a lot of dialogue so likely a 180+ page script) and they have so much to shoot. With that being said I did preface the video by saying I love this movie, 99% of it works for me and saw it several times, one of the best cinema experiences in recent memory for the sound design alone + fun fact my favourite movie of all time is The Prestige, which is a Nolan movie, main point being that just because the way they tied these encounters together was silly doesn't mean that its not a great film, both these things can be true at once. Edit: also great to see that this won so many awards at the Golden Globes, hopefully will sweep the Oscars as well :)
