Another great one Phil! It's like you're overhearing the conversations in our house, with the questions you ask 😂 We were wondering the same with how players like Oli and also D men judge how they've done, as there aren't many stats to track for them! We also always wonder how on earth they know when to come off the ice. Fun to hear about his superstitious stuff too. Great podcast 😊

Advice regarding moving on is easier to give than to receive. It is simple, in hindsight. But as someone still (and seemingly forever) going through Hell it is too simplistic to do things like forgive abusers, use the past as a stepping stone to the future, and so on. Sometimes hearing from people who have come through the other side is hard because we are still working out how to get there - or even IF we can get there.

Great interview and it's always encouraging to see that people with nuerodiversities are flourishing. The only part I disagree with is the word diagnosis. Diagnosis. The meaning of the word is the identification of an issue or problem by studying symptoms. It's not offensive at all. We shouldn't be uncomfortable accepting that word and many parents fight and struggle and spend years trying to source one. A diagnosis also isn't a label. No one would say I was labelled rhumatoid arthritis or you wouldn't say someone was labelled with a serious mental illness its a condition. The word label is actually a soft word for ablism in my opinion. Take any other minority group.... Gay people want to sleep with everyone. They're labelled promiscuous it's not true, it's damaging and actually homophobic to say that. To say everyone with a mental illness is violent, to say all black women are angry they're all designed to spread negative opinions on minority groups. So I always scrubbed the word label and use the word ablist because that's what it is and when it comes to physical disabilty or nuerodoversity we don't seem to on mass recognise the things people say as prejudice the same way we do with other groups.

The domestic violence thing is a very victim having to save themselves. The amount of times I was made to feel like I was keeping myself in the situation until things came to ahead and I leterally had to run baby in buggy pj's on and went to the social worker I had in care. They literally before I asked said I had to come back the day after cos there was no on duty social workers. Ended up in a refuge but again I had to leave my friends, I had to quit my job while he stayed and did what he always did. We need violence rehab centees not refuges

From the start of this convo - afterlife... I have a ghost hunting hobby and what's strange is I usually have an experience, from feeling strangled, to uncontrollably crying to feeling unwell or that cold cold air. There was a clear "visit" when my youngest was born. Now I'm wasn't convinced about the ghost thing before and you expect to be terrified but I wasn't. I also died for a minute and was thoroughly dissapointed that there was no white light or floating above myself 😂 religion is a social construct for sure based on a real man though.

Also your points on mental health were interesting. Some people do get trapped in their own narrative "everything always goes wrong for me" etc and it can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Through years of struggling with mental health, my experience has taken me on a journey from feeling like a victim in my own life, to taking ownership of my mental health in the same way I try to take charge of my physical health. After all, the brain is just another organ in our physical body, right. Exercise is definitely an important tool in maintaining good mental well-being, as is getting enough sleep and eating well but also self-acceptance and self-knowledge is important. I think checking in with a counsellor or trusted friend regularly is a great idea. It took me years to go and see a counsellor (although anyone else struggling I would have suggested they try it as a first step) and doing sessions with a trained counsellor was really good for me as it made me look analytically at the feelings I was experiencing without judgement. I learned really valuable problem solving skills and to be able to evaluate my own mental state and what was triggering any bad feelings. I think as a society, we are conditioned to think that we should avoid bad feelings at all costs. Don't cry in front of others... Don't say when we're feeling low as nobody wants to hear it... Etc but these feelings are all valid parts of the human experience and it is unreasonable to think we should be happy all of the time. Sometimes just naming how we feel is enough to make us feel better and is essential for helping us heal. Everyone has their own story. What may seem insignificant for one person, might be a cause of massive pain for another. Ultimately, it's how we react to emotionally painful feelings or life circumstances that defines us. Finding strength to face our demons is a unique journey. No two experiences are the same. I have deep empathy for anyone who struggles with mental health. It's a life-long struggle in some cases. People talking openly about it needs to happen more. Nice little video this Phil. Keep em coming.
