    "Red Thunder-Tropic Lightning, The World of a Combat Division in Vietnam", by Eric Bergerud would be one of my top three. It covers the experiences of soldiers in the 25th Infantry Division. "Chickenhawk" and " A Rumour of War", would be my other two picks.

For a fiction book, James by Percival Everett is one of the best books I've read in a long time. If you are looking for another topic area let me know and I'll try to help!

    Depends on what is meant by 'the industrial revolution'. If we're simply talking about the development of industry and mass comodeties as 'the industrial revolution' then we must consider colonialism as the foundation of the industrial revolution. The fortunes of European and the American empires were built on both slavery and colonisation. Therefore, there's a good argument that colonialism is more important as it gave way to industrialisation. I think however the Enlightenmnet is the most significant as its the ideology that underpinned both colonialism and the industrial revolution (these two coincided) the ideals of rationalism, science and progress brought with it ideals of supremecy and domination which has given way to more acrocities than anyone could have imagined.

    How crucial is organised chronology when covering a breadth question? By this I mean, do you really need to talk about the 1850s then 1890s then 1930s instead of 1890s then 1850s then 1930s if the question asked about the time period 1850-1930?

    • @mrgunnhistory
      @mrgunnhistory หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the comment. If the question is asking whether a certain time period was most significant within a larger timeframe, I would suggest starting with the period in question. This means your answer may not be chronological. Generally, chronological makes most sense to me logically but always start with the issue in question. I hope that helps!

    How many marks would you lose if you did summaries after the two enquiries and provenance but didn’t do an overall conclusion as you had been summarising throughout anyway? Could you still get into the top band? Also, please could differentiate between “illuminating the source through contextual knowledge” and “using the source to illuminate contextual knowledge”?

    • @mrgunnhistory
      @mrgunnhistory หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, For your first point - it's difficult to say without seeing the response but if you have given developed summaries at the end of each paragraph that offer substantiated judgements then I can't see why this couldn't get into the top level for a source question. For the second point, contextual knowledge is used to support or challenge inferences made from the source, so to help expand on matters of detail in the source. I hope that helps!

    This video (and others) have been very useful to me. However, I feel very frustrated as I have followed this exact methodology when writing my essays and I have checked the mark scheme and met all the criteria, yet when my teacher marks such essays, she often scores it a 18/20. This is the lowest of the top band so I honestly don’t understand what I’m missing out and what I need to do to improve it. My teacher is off on maternity leave now so I can’t ask her. I understand that it would be tricky for you to respond accurately as you can’t see my work - although I’m not sure how I could show you - but what do you think is causing her to mark me lower; what would cause a 18 vs a 20/20?

    • @mrgunnhistory
      @mrgunnhistory หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, thanks for the comment and I'm pleased the videos have been helpful. You may have seen this already, but a while back I did a video giving key tips to push essays up to the top of L5 - perhaps incorporating some of these ideas into your work could make a difference? It's here; th-cam.com/video/q9iwuI5Hbes/w-d-xo.html Another tip I would give is thinking about your analytical language and ensuring you are using effective language to really push your analysis further. That said, some teachers don't like giving top marks for essays during the year to ensure students continue to push themselves. So it may be that the same essay would be rewarded more marks in the actual exam. I hope that helps and best of luck with it all!

    • @mrgunnhistory
      @mrgunnhistory หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes - you can criticise a source for leaving something out if the omission is vital to the enquiry and has been left out for a reason. For example, if the source is a political speech and is purposely leaving out an event to portray things in a particular way. I hope that helps!

    I hope you don’t mind me suggesting but I think it might be a good idea to do a video where you compare model answers that got full marks to those that got less marks. For instance, the top tier for my exam board (Edexcel) is 17-20. I think it would be useful if you could compare model answers that scored 17/20 and those that scored full marks or those that scored 13/20 and those that scored 16/20 etc, highlighting the reasons why they did so we could see how the different bands work and how to fully meet all of the criteria to hopefully get full marks! I know that examiners’ reports exist but these don’t break down the exact differences as concretely as I think you may be able to do.

    When you marked A-level history papers, did you make comments on the candidate’s answer. The reason why I ask is because I have got my papers back for my A-levels and for all subjects I have comments from the examiners who criticise/praise certain aspects of my work. But for history, for some reason, there are no comments just a score.

    • @mrgunnhistory
      @mrgunnhistory 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

  • @LindaAndrews-ly1qf
    @LindaAndrews-ly1qf 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Hi, I just got my exam scripts back. For the interpretation question on paper 1, I did an overall really good answer with analysis and contextual knowledge. However, I ran out of time and I wrote a one line conclusion so didn’t weigh everything up in the conclusion. However, I was evaluating and weighing things up all along. I got 14/20. I’m not sure if I should ask for a remark but do you think 14/20 seems right or too low just because I didn’t do a proper conclusion.

    • @mrgunnhistory
      @mrgunnhistory 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the comment. It's difficult to tell without seeing the answer, but if you are very close to the grade above then it may be worth going for the remark. Level 4 and Level 5 of the mark scheme require 'fully supported' or 'fully substantiated judgements', so if you think you have done that within the paragraphs then you may be in with a chance of the score going up. I hope that helps and best of luck with it all.

    What does “valid criteria” mean in terms of the mark scheme? Suppose the question was, “how accurate is it to say that the GDR’s economy was successful between 1961-1985?” In some model answers, in the introduction they state that in order for the GDR to be judged to have had a successful economy, it needs to have met certain criteria like reducing unemployment or creating consumer goods and only if those criteria are met then the statement in the question can be proven true. They then use contextual knowledge to prove whether or not the GDR met such parameters. Is that what is meant by “valid criteria” in the mark scheme where you have to clearly define the parameters against which you are judging the validity of a statement? What happens if you don’t do that but instead you just write an introduction where you give a brief overview of the pros and cons and why one argument is stronger than another and then throughout your essay your evaluate and assess different arguments? Would that hit the valid criteria mark?

      @mrgunnhistory 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, This is a great question. Your first example is correct - valid criteria means means by which the issue in question can be judged. However, to be rewarded, It can be done either way - either defining key terms and setting out parameters or by having a clear basis for your argument (ie the GDR's economy was successful because XYZ' - essentially you are doing the same thing either way. Criteria is the area that students do have most difficulty with - I've made a couple of videos on this issue which may be useful too; Focusing on criteria; th-cam.com/video/eBS8SrYmA5E/w-d-xo.html Another way of thinking about criteria; th-cam.com/video/MsGYq0lxSew/w-d-xo.html I hope that helps!

    Hi, I wrote a good essay for a question that I did in the exam but I am not sure if I messed up in terms of organisation. Basically, for the essay I wrote a for argument and then an against argument and then a for argument and a small against argument again. Would this be bad for organisation as I heard somewhere that you need to keep all of your for arguments to one side and your against arguments to another to make it flow better? Will I lose marks due to this in terms of a lack of organisation or is it fine?

    • @mrgunnhistory
      @mrgunnhistory 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, Thanks for the comment. I wouldn't worry too much about this - if you have been engaging with the focus of the question consistently throughout the answer then the order of the paragraphs isn't a huge issue. You've focused on the argument in question initially, which is good and offered some alternative ideas, so I don't think you need to worry - examiners aren't expecting a single approach. I hope that helps and best of luck with it all!

    Hi. Should section A have any mention to the interpretations that form the basis of the other three sections or is it solely my own view on the matter that should be argued. If so does the second introduction (the one regarding the interpretations) come before or after the section A essay? Thankksss

    • @mrgunnhistory
      @mrgunnhistory 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can briefly introduce the lines of argument from the interpretations within Section A if you want to, but as you say, this section is primarily giving your view. In terms of the second intro - this could either come at the start of the whole essay or at the start of the second section. I personally think it makes sense for it to be early on in the essay but ultimately the coursework structure is up to you and whatever is most logical for you. I hope that helps.

    For any non-source history essay, is it a good idea to use evaluation in your paragraphs? If the question was, “how accurate is it to say that Chartism failed from 1838-1850 due to poor leadership”, there could be a paragraph in support of the statement but two against. So, the first paragraph could be that Chartism failed due to poor leadership; the second that it didn’t fail due to poor leadership but due to a lack of genuine desire for reform; and the third that it didn’t fail due to poor leadership but government power. However, for the second paragraph, (so the first paragraph which argues against the statement) could you also use evaluation and say “however, this argument is weakened because Chartism broke up into separate organisations which means that there was still a desire for reform and perhaps this had to do with poor leadership”. I don’t know if doing such evaluation would nullify the paragraph by contradicting it or if it would be a good tactic. Also, since the overall argument is that I disagree with the statement, would it be a good or bad thing to do as it may or may not weaken my overall argument but could make it seem like I was considering different viewpoints?

    • @mrgunnhistory
      @mrgunnhistory 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, Good question. The suggestion you make is a good one - as you are essentially linking back to the factor in the question in another paragraph (always a good thing). However (as you suggest), it may come across as contradictory if you do this consistently and yet argue that the factor in the question isn't the most important factor. This is why summaries at the end of each paragraph are really important - you can link back to the factor in the question but still fully weigh up the relative importance of each factor then. I hope that helps!

    • @SarahLayton-hu7jm
      @SarahLayton-hu7jm 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@mrgunnhistory thank you. I have two further questions. 1) Since it could come across as contradictory would it be better to not use such evaluation - is it even necessary to reach the top levels? 2) When it comes to the organisation bulletin in the top band, how critical is to follow a structure of one paragraph for and then two paragraphs against? For instance, if the question was about the accuracy of something and you though that the statement was not accurate, the traditional structure would be to write a paragraph supporting the statement and then two against. But what if someone wrote one paragraph against the statement and then a paragraph supporting the statement and then another paragraph against the statement. Would that be disorganised and wrong or would it be fine?

    • @mrgunnhistory
      @mrgunnhistory 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@SarahLayton-hu7jm Hi, here are some answers 1) It isn't necessary. You can do it, as long as your overall argument is coherent and logical but be wary of too many counterpoints which can make the whole thing seem less coherent. 2) This would be fine. There isn't an expectation of one paragraph for and one against, it is very possible to get L5 for two paragraphs on the focus of the question and one against provided you cover a sufficient range of evidence. I hope that helps!

      That's a great question. For Paper 3, one of the final questions was, “To what extent was the passage of the 1884 Representation of the People Act the most significant moment in the reduction in aristocratic power between 1780-1928”? I wrote three good paragraphs with analysis and evaluation. I talked about the 1884 Representation of the People Act in one paragraph, the 1918 Reform Act in another and the 1928 Reform Act in a third. But, I was reading the examiners’ report and it said something about having to cover 75%+ of the time period (1780-1928). Does this mean because I focused on the 1880s-1928 while not talking about or analysing legislation from earlier in the time period like the 1832 Reform Act, that this will be wrong or that I won’t be able to reach the top band?

    • @mrgunnhistory
      @mrgunnhistory 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, thanks for the comment. If you have only covered between 1884-1928 in a question with dates from 1780-1928 it will mean that you can't access L5 (which needs 75% coverage) for the bullet point on evidence. You could still end up with a L5 mark if your analysis, criteria and structure are good but for the bullet point of the mark scheme on evidence you wouldn't be able to get L5. In other words, you may not get 20/20 but you could still get a high score if everything else is worthy of L5. I hope that makes sense!

    • @TainaWoods
      @TainaWoods 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@mrgunnhistory thank you. I was reading the examiners’ report and apparently I wouldn’t even reach L4 with that coverage, it would be more L3. Does this mean that even if everything else was good, I wouldn’t get at least 17/20? Also, what if I minimally referred to an earlier time period? For instance, in my first paragraph supporting the 1884 reform act, I talked about how from 1832-1884 there had been minimal change and how in the 1850s there had been riots for more change; but after 1884 there was much more change. So, I didn’t talk in depth about the 1830s or 1850s but I did mention it somewhat. Is the result still the same as you said?

    • @mrgunnhistory
      @mrgunnhistory 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TainaWoods If you minimally referred to the earlier period then that may push it to L4 - it is difficult to say without seeing the answer an something like that depends on the level of detail you have in the answer. Hi, that's a great question. Just looking at grade boundaries from 2019, the % needed for an A* varied from 82-86% depending on the option, whereas 2023 was 85-88%. It's hard to say whether things will go up or down, as these things are calculated once all the marking has been done. However, last year's were higher than before so hopefully they won't be as high. It's generally the case that scoring 17/20 (85%) or above will guarantee an A*.
