MEANING
Fo'i Mai Pepe is a short film that signifies a mother yearning for her child. The mother represents Samoan language and cultural arts and the child represents people like me who are trying to connect more with their Samoan cultural roots.
MOVING IMAGE
The main characters (visually) are as follows: Taonga pūoro and fagufagu flautist Shane McLean, contemporary dancer Aloali'i Tapu, fa'ataupati dancer Elijah Kennar, patē drummer Ross Nansen, and choir conductor Seumanu Simon Matafai (ACG choir members are purposely not seen, as their voices represent the motherland calling from afar; pao vocalist Jordyn Rapana also is represented in spirit form). Views of our beautiful Tāmaki Makaurau, where the short film was shot, are featured.
MUSIC COMPOSITION
The music proudly exudes a Samoan resonance - our language, voices, traditional instrumentation, and siva rhythms. It comprises four movements. The first commences with an acknowledgement of the whenua of Aotearoa. This is channelled via taonga pūoro with the purerehua and koauau played by Shane McLean, along with a pao delivered by Jordyn Rapana. The fagufagu (traditional Samoan nose flute), played by Shane McLean, breaks the silence with a haunting motif into the second movement, one that winds its way into a piano duet, which I play. The third movement is led by Elijah Kennar's fa'ataupati. The slaps work as a drummer - its rhythmic movements form the 'heartbeat' of my percussion ensemble. Each slap dictates what the pate and orchestral percussive and stringed instruments do rhythmically. The fourth movement features a choir singing a lullaby that encapsulates the meaning of the short film.
