Well, today the Leaning Tower gathers over 5 million visitors each year and it makes about 21 million euro per year. So in retrospect, making it lean was probably a very profitable mistake ;)

The sea covers the causeway during high tide, but around 10 years ago they also completed a bridge making it accessible even during high tides. So the excitement of potentially getting stranded there is now lost.

Well, there has been reported more than one, really. But the ghost of a beheaded king is believed to be that of King Charles I of England. Charles I was executed by beheading in 1649 during the English Civil War. Legend has it that Charles I's ghost haunts several locations associated with his life and death, including Windsor Castle, where he was held prisoner before his execution. His spirit is said to roam the castle grounds, particularly the area around the Royal Library, where he spent time before his execution.

Wow, that's impressive! Thanks for pointing that out. There are also some huge motorsport venues with bigger capacity, but at least for football stadiums Rungrado seems to be the biggest (in terms of seating capacity).

@@aerial_tours Yes, but it gets even more grotesque. One of the first famous psychiatrists, Bernhard von Gudden, diagnosed him as "mentally ill" on hearsay alone, without ever having seen the king. And then, after the king's capture, he supervised him in his house arrest and accompanied him for a nightly stroll. A few hours later, both were found dead in Lake Starnberg. Oh, and as a joke of history, Ludwig II's castles and palaces have now cost the Bavarian state many times their original cost in entrance fees. In fact, they are a considerable item in the state coffers and, in hindsight and from a financial and tourist perspective, it would have been better to let him build as many castles as he pleased.

@@aerial_tours No, but a flying peacock. He wanted to build a cable car for himself from the castle over the nearby lake, with a gondola representing the golden carriage of the goddess Juno/Hera, pulled by peacocks as in mythology. - At the time, however, this was not yet technically feasible.

The flying peacock cable car might have been ahead of its time, but it sure would have been a majestic way to travel! :) I am actually quite surprised that no Hollywood director have picked up his life story yet - or am I missing something?

By the way: Did you know that Herrenchiemsee is not just a copy of Versailles, but even better? The mirror gallery in Herrenchiemsee is 1 meter longer than the original, and where the original only has painted golden decorative frames and figures between the ceiling paintings, those in Herrenchiemsee are actually sculptural.

Intriguing, right? And there's more, like the rumor that Ludwig II was actually gay with a special admiration for the composer Richard Wagner.
