When he was great, je was really great. His tempi, when they work, give a megalithic quality like no one else. The Brahms Symphonies! When they don't work he is just slow. His Messiah recording is great in bits and pieces. As a total performance- OMG it never ever ends!

Where can I buy the DVD containing the films “Otto Klemperer’s Long Journey Through His Times” and the documentary of his last concert with the New Philharmonia? I found a Netherlands-based site that offered it, but the link didn’t seem to work. I have to agree with you in preferring Klemperer’s later rendition of the finale of Beethoven No. 7 to the c. 1961 recording. Klemperer’s tempo is slower than I might prefer, but after a few minutes of it it is thoroughly convincing. The vigor is there. That’s what matters. That, and security of tempo. The shouts of approval at the end say everything. I enjoyed what I heard here of Klemperer’s recording of Mahler No. 7. I do not know that recording: I intend to acquire it. His Bach b minor Mass obviously shows a great love for the score and a lifetime of living with it. Thank you for a marvelous and engrossing presentation. engrossing
