      Man... Earth and Beyond is something I haven't thought about in a long time. Never got to give it a shot back in the day. And I agree, some of the current space sims I've been toying with don't have "the magic" that I used to get from some of the older games (I partly think they lean into complexity too much to satisfy niche audiences that are more likely to show up). Thanks for the comment and checking this out. Going to go refresh my memory a little on Earth and Beyond.

    Still enjoying the content very much and your stream of consciousness as you play. One thing I notice that drives me batty: inventory bags. One thing I've learned to do, and helps me immensely, as I'm a hoarder and tend to keep most things, is to take advantage of the auto loot sorter. It's the down arrow on Bag #1. I used to hate it and for the longest time refused to use it because I'm a bit neurotic on where I put things, such as food and potions in Bag #3, for example. Hitting the auto-sort just messed that up, but meant I was constantly having to spend time moving items around by hand. But, after forcing myself to use the auto-sorter and learning how LOTRO sorts it, I've found it actually helps. It keeps all like types together and places items in the last bag, working its way toward Bag #1. As new items are acquired, they go at the front of Bag #1. After each Quest, or when I go to a Vendor, I look at each new item, lock the items I want to keep and Sell-All everything else, then Auto-sort the rest. It's an ongoing process, but keeps it fast and simple, much like me. Anyway, I hope that is useful to you. Keep on Questing, I'm enjoying the journey and the personal stories. (PS, except Politics. Remember, no matter which side of the aisle you identify with, half the country disagrees, and some passionately, and you end up losing half your audience.)

      @BlackLodgeTrivia หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh, that's awesome to know. Really really appreciate that tip. As I mentioned, I've only been playing LOTRO for 17 years so I still don't know what I'm doing. I will absolutely look for that next session.

      @@BlackLodgeTrivia I've been playing for 14 years and only got over my stubbornness this year to use the auto-sort. 1 Bag is just as easy. To the left of the auto-sort is a cogged wheel, press that button and all your bags will open. You'll notice that every second line in each bag is shaded. You can move each line of 5 slots into Bag #1. All bags can be transferred to the main bag via drag and drop. I still refuse to use 1 bag as a settle to my stubborn streak.

    Yeah. I've recently gone through the same thing with D100 systems. I bounced off of Motehrship but like a lot of it's modules. I remembered really liking Dark Heresy 2e but couldn't remember why since I don't think I ever convinced anyone to play it. Then re-reread it recently. I think when a D100 hits just right it makes me feel like a kid playing Fallout 1 again. If it misses the mark then it just feels dry. CoC and Delta Green gave me glimpses of that but reading Mythras, M-Space, Dark Heresy really makes me want to convince my friends to try something in that BRP/Mythras family of games.

      Interesting that you said you bounced off Mothership... I'm in the same boat on some level. Mechanically never blew me away but I've really enjoyed the adventures I've played in. Like you said, when d100 misses the mark it feels really dry, more so for me than other systems for some reason. Maybe it's too easy to overkill it like CoC? I have no idea. I really want to try Delta Green at some point and see if it's different enough from CoC on some level to keep it interesting. Hopefully you can win your friends over to trying something BRP-based... obviously I'm a big fan of Mythras and its derivatives in particular,

    I totally agree with your point on the immersion in the towns. Games like Skyrim, that let you fully explore an area visually by free roaming etc, are always an issue for me when it comes to immersion. The towns are always faarrrrr too small, because they have to be. Also, you feel the need to explore every house and speak to every resident, in the hopes of a quest or some special loot, and no one would ever operate that way. Visiting a town and trying to strike up a conversation with every single citizen, trying to enter every dwelling, look in every container you see etc. It simply wouldn't happen, and yet I always feel the need to play that way because if you don't you end up missing some big quest or something.

    • @BlackLodgeTrivia
      @BlackLodgeTrivia หลายเดือนก่อน

      Agree completely, I feel like modern games add detail in specificity in the wrong place at the expense of the right place. Detail and specificity for walking around, not missing anything or anyone as you describe instead of detail in the story and NPCs. Who cares if you find them in a physically represented building or on a menu list of "Townfolk" where your imagination fills in the rest? I really love how Darklands handled towns and cities... they actually felt more alive to me than ones that are more simulated in modern games. Ironically, I just started Ultima 5, the series where I think a lot of the more modern approaches stem from.

    Really well done review! Great pace and examples This game is detailed, very realistic, and provides a rich experience. On the down side, the flow of the story can easily be interrupted by technical rule mechanics, slowing the story down. However, a great GM will be able to remember the rules without having to look them up. This leads to a much faster flow and the players can focus on the story instead. In addition, rules are there to help explaining and guide a situation and can be ignored if it slows down the story. But because of the rules, the GM can really act out a scene and thus providing feedback of, say, a fight scene and gives details where the sword hits, how much bleeding occurs, and if the attacked is in shock or just fatigued by injury or encumbrance. Example 1) Your sword is blocked by a shield. Harn rules will provide more details: It's a wooden shield and because the sword strike was critical, the hit was much harder, and the shield failed to absorb the hit and is now broken in two pieces. The attacker gets an advantage and was granted a second attack. This time the defender couldn't hide behind a shield and the attackers probability of winning increased dramatically. Example 2) After a couple of rounds where attacks were blocked by both knights, one of them started to accumulate great fatigue due to heavier armor, and he was failing to block, the other knight were able to critically hit him, enough force to penetrate his right lower sword arm. He suffered a serious cut, and combined with fatigue from the long fight, failed a shock roll and fainted. The knight might also run the risk of getting an infected wound and die from it. If you want medieval realism and details HarnMaster and HarnWorld will provide just that!

    • @BlackLodgeTrivia
      @BlackLodgeTrivia 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks so much for the comment and for checking this out. Your point about the game being very detailed is why I wanted to show the Foundry VTT module because I think it really takes the edge off of it on some level. But it also might make people a little too complacent with rules understanding. Otherwise I agree completely with you, the rules give a level of detail that can really flesh out the narrative of a fight, especially if the GM knows them backwards and forwards so the flow keeps pace. Add to that all the world building material that feels accurate not just to Harn but to our Middle Ages, and yeah... medieval realism at its finest.

      I built a RAG AI bot using Ollama and some open source embedding models which I fed all the PDFs to help overcome any slow downs. I can just ask my bot for the rule and it finds it for me. Probably not something everyone can do but certainly helpful for me and my players.

    Traveller is great. Granted, I've built my familiarity with Charted Space since I was a kid, the LBB days, so maybe that's a factor. However, you can use Traveller's Charted Space by just picking a particular region which is what you'll typically do when running a game in this setting. Traveller's Charted Space allows for a lot of different play possibilities. That said, I do appreciate this type of setting also and will probably check it out as an interesting alternative. Very good review.

      Really appreciate you checking it out. I didn't do much "here's how the rules work" but I figure there's a lot of ways to learn about that. Since you go way back with Traveller, you already know all of that. Basically I find the setting to Traveller overwhelming but in a way that, like you said, allows for a lot of different play possibilities. I think I personally need some constraints to get the creative juices flowing sometimes (which is why overwhelmed is where I sometimes land when going through Traveller books). Anyway, hopefully you enjoy Hostile if you end up checking it out. Thanks again.

    The only problem is, you're missing part of the gameplay loop the developers intended. Souls games are kind of "rhythm" games where you need to time rolls and hits and the right time, sometimes bosses' moves even match their ost. You can have fun doing your own thing, of course, but just maybe try and do a second run where you play "fair" and learn the bosses' patterns after you got familiar with the gameplay mechanics. Like just try, and not out of spite to show that you're a "TRUE G@M3R", just to see if you have fun getting the adrenaline rush of locking in on a boss and beating it. You'll see it's not that hard, I'd say most of souls games difficulty is the lack of info on some gameplay mechanics and how to be efficient with a given build.

      @Cerberusfrosty 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't get your logic what is your definition of fair cause that's super subjective right. How is your definition of fair the same as mine or his. Even if your version of "fair" might be fun what if its not fun to me or the next person to play the game just let people experience different things. pushing your "fairness" on others isn't very fair is it?

    I don't think you need the added Landscape Difficulty Sliders. Your play style, by focusing on only the Epic Storyline, has you taking on Red colour Quests and fighting Red colour enemies. About 1/3 of your attacks are being deflected by your enemies. Upping the Difficulty and adds things like Eye of Sauron, causing a Pillar of Flame that adds an AoE attack that hurts you harshly. IMHO this is more for the Completionist type player who ends up over levelled for most of the Landscape Quests they encounter. Makes the slog sloggier. On a side note, you've been bumped from steady 2nd monitor content to enthusiastic 1st monitor content for when I'm not actually playing the game. Hoping you continue the series.

    • @BlackLodgeTrivia
      @BlackLodgeTrivia 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Appreciate the insight on the Landscape sliders. I feel like if I pay decent attention to what I'm doing, I can get through most of the stuff without too much danger or mastery of my class, so I was curious. I could see it making sense for someone who wanted to do everything and keep it a challenge. Also appreciate getting the promotion in monitors, definitely planning to go for a lot longer with this. Thanks for checking this out as always, glad you're enjoying this run through the book quests.

    There are two reasons why someone would watch a playthrough video or the the major of gameplay videos. One being a reasonable assumption of quality. Two being interest aka trends. As such a small channel you need to follow trends and cross promote betwixt the various platforms. If you dont your channel will continue to stagnate indefinitely.

    Just wanted to leave a quick review of my experience after one domain of Ker Nethalas: I think it is fun as a survival game. I would prefer a few more streamlined mechanics. It is very easy to miss some dice rolls, for example the lair and tension die checks. Also light was never a problem in my game. I had tons of crafting materials. So for me it is just another mechanic you might forget. My biggest problem with exploration is that there is not really that much to do. You just explore the rooms, fight, scavenge and then fight the overlord to do it all over again. The events I got were also just standard "you take x damage" or "you gain 10 xp" stuff. I would like to see some random quests other than the personal goals that are more like achievements. It also helps to level up quicker. It takes a lot of time to even level up once. I enjoyed combat even though it can be a drag sometimes. I played as a gravecaller and had 3 skeleton companions which helped a lot. I like the magic item system that generates random items. I am always a fan of random generation of things. I think the next time I play the game I would combine it with some narrative structure with the help of the Mythic Game Master Emulator or some kind of Ironsworn-based open oracles to fill the dungeon with more life without breaking the lore. I still have to try out the fixed domains in the zines. Maybe they are more interesting to explore.

    • @BlackLodgeTrivia
      @BlackLodgeTrivia 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for checking these out and these are great comments. Completely agree. I like the detail in a lot of the systems but combat in particular overstayed its welcome a bit for me personally. I'm very much in the camp that wants to explore instead of fight, so constantly bumping into enemies in every room for fights that could last 20 minutes threw off the explore/fight ratio for me. I wish the setting fleshed out the "end game" hinted at in the book (finding the throne itself I think?) to give the run more of a narrative purpose. I don't think it needs a design that allows a single character to go on indefinitely, I think a structure that comes to and end and motivates you to try a different build would really work well. I am curious to see what the domains in the zines are like that look to be more bespoke. Anyway, thanks for checking these out. Trying to see about some other Blackoath games to go along with future Ker Nethalas runs.

    I enjoy your playthrough and don't want to sound too critical but just in case you want to know some parts where you differ from the official rules: 1. Don't forget your passive mastery abilites on the mastery skill page. I think you have never used them. 2. The +10 to the attacker roll changes with every turn to the new attacker. It is not meant to be fixed based on initiative. Initiative only decides who gets the first attack. 3. You are supposed to roll the type of a monster attack first. The reason is that you only counter non-magical attacks with your weapon skill or dodge. If the monster attacks with a magical attack you just do a magical resistance check (which is much worse).

    • @BlackLodgeTrivia
      @BlackLodgeTrivia 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, I definitely completely forgot about the masteries (I thought I remembered at some point in session three? but I can't remember exactly). I know I call out that I forgot they existed. I completely thought that initiative determined an "attacker" and a "defender." What you describe with the +10 going back and forth makes total sense. And rolling the type of attack for the monster also makes total sense. I just got into the loop and never thought about figuring out the kind of attack first. Don't worry about sounding too critical. I'm happy to get insight into how the game should work for when I come back to it. Really appreciate it, thanks again for the comments.

    The way I played camping I allowed myself to first craft rations and then use them before actually resting. It seemed thematically more resonable to me. Also, I do not think that not having rations reduces the benefits of your camping check role. I think it is meant to only reduce the benefits that are listed in the subsection "benefits", namely your stat improvements after resting (which you did not reduce at your first rest).

    Like your playthorugh. I have started my first game of Ker Nethalas a few days ago. It can be very crunchy. There are some great exploration and combat charts available online that can help with not forgetting things. Although, I guess you only really need them after routine sets in.

      By the way: I don't know if you have already figured it out in later sessions but as long as damage is not "direct damage" afaik all damage is reduced in the limits of the damage table. So, your D4 necrotic wound will only deal 0 or 1 damage each turn.
