I was confused when I first got mine but then I figured out through trial and error that the smoke doesn't come out the bottom until its been going for a bit haha my bad
I saw something in another video. Their incense had a HOLE AT THE BOTTOM... SO THE SMOKE CAN DRAIN DOWN..
I think the type of incense is important. Maybe the cheap stuff doesn't work? And you need one with a high smoke rate??? Just an opinionated guess🤷🏻♀️....

Can anyone explain how those smokes work?
It's the same principal as a chimney, where cooler air is drawn in to the fire- place which pushes the smoke upwards. Here that process is upside down where the ember draws in the cool air from the top which in turn forces out the smoke through the pre-made hole in the cone.

I literally just got this for the first time a few days ago and it's the small one with three leaves as well as the cute small incense cones all lavender the lavender is to honor and feel closer to the goddess but the holder came with some of its own so I got some for free lol
