Lecture: Laurie Frink's Method of Trumpet Instruction
Question about the lip buzz. When buzzing in the register you did it, isn’t it an octave higher on the mouthpiece and horn? I’ve always been shown that the lip buzz should be an octave lower than the mouthpiece buzz/pitch on the trumpet. Otherwise we are too tight. Just curious. Love the deep dive into Laurie and Caruso.
Good question. For the Frink/Caruso style stuff, we always buzz at pitch which is higher whereas the Stamp lip buzz approach is an octave lower. The Frink way is all about developing strength and relaxation under tension whereas the Stamp approach is more about getting a relaxed buzz and breath approach. Two different goals but with the same mechanism. Lots of value in both approaches - Laurie also had people not really buzz at all or who sucked at buzzing and still did a little of it. Very customizable. Happy to chat more about it with you if you want!
Laurie also said to me that lip buzzing wasn’t about doing the same thing as playing, but that it does teach our bodies something about resistance.
Please do more of these, you guys have a fantastic sound and I'm sure you'll gain a following if you keep at it
Awesome, I'm so impressed by this recording. It's an extremely challenging work and this is the first time I've actually heard it performed despite being performed several times since I wrote it several years ago. Bravo!
Got me my Flexus, love me my Flexus!
Thanks for this!!
Very cool!
What C trumpet are performing with in this video? Is the Bach Strad Chicago C?
It's a Thane built by Logan Thane in Portland wonderful instrument.
@@gdong3 Ok, awesome. Sounds great. 👍 alot warmth and body to the sound. I traded you a Bach Strad Chicago C (that had been blueprinted and really open blowing) a few years ago for a Larsen GFT C trumpet you had. The Larsen Gft C plays very efficiently with a focused 229 like projection.
Is the trumpet your playing the Larsen GFT C trumpet?
I really like Wynton's huge, warm Monette sound but I also like his brighter, more compact sound using this smaller, lighter horn Reminds me of Wynton's pre-Monette, large-bore Bach sound
as good as hes ever played !
Sounds WAY better than his Monette! So much vibrancy and color, high end overtones!
I agree with you.
There’s no real depth to it tho it’s a big sound but out front, it def sounds a little …. Defunct compared to his main horn
pretty sure you’re the one who talked me out of ordering a custom adams (twice) thru ur shop @acb by placing terminologies between us instead of asking what I’m looking for
Wonderful!! Great performance! 🥇🎺⭐️😎🏆
That was a fun concert
Fantastic. I’ll work on this, but doing pedals and intervals, I can’t imagine ever doing it this well. Great playing; thanks for posting.
Great solo but that 'sound' , so unlike Wynton 😂🎺 that man can play any horn...very impressive
That's exactly what I was thinking... That horn makes his tone so different
Sounds like trash
マルサリスの音になってる.... 楽器は二の次ですね
Bit more ping on this thing..
Just discovered this piece - you play it like angels!!! I hope you are enjoying great careers six years later!
Stick to your Monnette Sir!
Yeah Derek!
that's how people play sousaphone in Mexico
He had hit a gate hard on top and lost the goggle. Tried to continue but, hey, his crazy enough to go down that slope but not THAT crazy to go at it with water in his eyes!!!
Very nice!!!!!
Congratulations!!!
that is crap. He sounds amazing either way.
Nice work Travis!!! Thanks for representing the USA! Good luck in the future hope to meet you someday.
@dwartyclone You got that right...the horn doesn't mean nearly as much.
Did you ski out intentionally there?
Im the best skier on the mountain.
F^%&ing monster. I play monette and have done for many years, I can still play many other horns well, but unlike Wynton. I can't master them... awesome solo. Such focus and clarity.
cant belive this guy is pro... im soo much better than him
Thanks Derek!
The Trumpet here is a BSC Trumpets desiged by Tomomi Kato. The horn was given to Wynton. Mr. Kato flew to NY to present it to him. However, secretaries at LCJO knew that Wynton plays a Monette. The horn was then given to Marcus as a gift!!! And yes, Wynton or any other good quality player can sound good on any instrument. They just have to work harder to obtain the quality of sound that they hear present in their inner ear!!!! Keep Swingin!!!

Jack Glottman on piano! Bravo!
Marcus told me that Wynton gave him that horn one night after a show... Wynton was getting (or had just gotten) his new Monette. So he knows that horn very well.
True dat!
ahh, you can give wynton a kazoo and he'll equally just tear it apart. its the man behind the horn that makes it happen...
I like how he can pick up some one else's horn and just burn on it.
Noooo waaaayyy!!! He gets a much more darker, velvety tone on the MONETTE :)
Oh snap!!!
