I think it is going well, your results might not be what you expected them to be yet, but your paintings are very clearly what you meant them to be. I count that as a win for myself because I have the rest of my life to beat me up 😅 I am trying to be encouraging here. Most likelt not achieving it 😣, but still I am being encouraging ☺️
Thanks for the kind words
Nice! Love the negative space tree trunks.
Thanks!
Oh, I always wondered how you recorded yourself painting. Do you have a video of that set up and the thing you use to hold your phone? Beautiful area! I usually sit down to paint, but I did the sketch for one while standing since I was in a hurry...and in the sand. 😂 Thanks again for taking us with you on your travels and plein air painting!
Hi Megan. I don’t have an equipment video yet because it is constantly changing and a bit disorganised at the moment. It is on the to do list however….
I really appreciate you documenting your progress - I'm at the same level as you and it is very encouraging for me. I haven't found many videos of people showing their paintings from day 1, and it can be discouraging. So thank you James.
So happy to be of service.
That was a nice sketch! I enjoyed seeing a bit of the local scenery.... there really is a painting around every corner. What travel brushes and sketchbook are you using?
Glad you like it. Using Escoda synthetic brushes (8,10,16) and a Fabriano sketchbook
That turned out great. I also notice we shop at the same art store for water cups...I have that same one, lol!
Love that!
Hi everyone! Just a friendly reminder that you should not dispose of your painting water in nature.
Great tip!
@paintandjournal Thanks!
First!
You are an amazing artist James !!!
Your temples got better ' n better, or I liked them more as you went along. I love that your little man joined you for that part. 💙 The pen and wash sketches, the blue tuktuk especially, are great. But then that's my favourite type of sketch. Thanks for this.
Ink and watercolour sketches are my favourite. Your 100 days progress is impressive! Thank you for sharing.
❤❤❤❤
6:07 I love these studies of the fisherman.
I am a painter from Sri Lanka and now I am in Denmark and sketching. You are sketching in Sri Lanka. What a wonderful world is this. 😊 I left Sri Lanka mostly because the country lost its decipline, attitudes and respect towards nature. But it’s truly a paradise. Specially for people who see it. You are doing a lovely job!!
Amazing painting process ❤❤❤
그림 멋져요 ~
I love the diversity of your subjects and that you didn’t use references but the real thing. Great
Thanks
Hello from Australia! I can see the improvements you are making with your painting - the fisherman study was lovely. As a fellow late bloomer, I applaud your courage and determination. Thanks for sharing.
G’day. Thanks for the message. Glad you enjoyed.
My husband likes to be on the go while we are out and about traveling. 😅 So I only had time for one full plein air painting on our last trip. I left him at the hotel while I went to watch the sunset. I did some quick pencil sketches and took pictures that I'm using for paintings now that I'm back home and not rushed. Fun both ways! Gorgeous travels and sketches! Thank you for sharing.
Hope you had a great trip. Please share your sketches - I would love to see them. Glad you enjoyed the content - is there anything specific you would like to see more of in future videos? Thanks for the feedback.
@paintandjournal we did have a lovely trip! I plan to share the sketches in upcoming videos and newsletters and/or my community tab. I should do more video clips of mine, but I get so focused on just painting and find it inconvenient to record myself. 😂 Your videos definitely inspire me. I really like seeing the clips of your surroundings where you paint. It's interesting hearing all the background noise since I often think of painting as so peaceful. It's impressive the chaos you sometimes paint in. 😅 I also like seeing how fast you paint. I want to practice that so I CAN do it if I want/need to even though I really enjoy painting slowly.
Thanks for the great feedback. I appreciate it. I look forward to seeing some clips of yours but would much rather you not get sucked into the algorithm and just paint!
Super sketches! You really are capturing the feeling of the place. Thanks for inspiring and also for showing us around!
Hi Carol. Glad you enjoyed it. It’s my pleasure. Is there anything you would like to see more of. The feedback would be a great help. Thanks.
It looks difficult to capture the shadows and the bright highlights
Hi Barry. I find getting the balance between the two the hard bit. What are your thoughts?
@@paintandjournal I have only ever used pencil and charcoal, but I agree that it takes skill to avoid a tonally flat picture. I think it's sometimes necessary to accentuate dark and light areas as it produces better results than representing what we see.
Love painting the dark first...beautiful!
Thanks. Struggling to get the darks dark enough… and I then there is the colour to great an illusion of darkness…colour theory is a whole world that awaits! What are your thoughts?
@paintandjournal I often paint too light because I've done a few paintings that got so dark I didn't like them. I think starting with the dark would have helped me. Although other factors could have been at play, too...like the paper or layers I used. 🤷♀️ Still, sometimes I stop a painting when it's good enough so I don't ruin it even though adding more depth and detail might also improve it. 😅
I also think sometimes just using a pen to add more detail or set up the dark parts is helpful for me. Sometimes I start with pen and color it in. Other times I start with paint and then add pen. I think I usually prefer starting with the pen because I get nervous putting it over a painting I've already spent a lot of time on.
Which Escoda travel brush were you using? Thanks for sharing your journey, it's been encouraging.
Hi John. Escoda Prado. Honestly I wouldn’t bother though….In future I would rather opt for one or two quality brushes and then saw the handles down to fit in a pencil case….
@@paintandjournal Thanks for the response. I bought the Princeton Aqua Elite travel set. Hopefully they will do okay.
Lovely view! You captured it well. Thanks for sharing!
Perfection is not the point! Remember that your art is just your interpretation of the subject. Otherwise you would just take a photograph. Keep up the great work!❤
Thanks Susan. Totally agree. I will.
Must feel good to have a paintbrush in your hand and your toes in the beach sand.😊🎨
Safe travels and share more with us, I like the mellow mood of your videos and seeing your progress.
Thanks
@@OrdinaryBarry Oh, yes! I echo OrdinaryBarry. I like your video and how you are sharing your art journey with us.
5:27 I love your line work 🙂.
3:04 Is that an Escoda Ultimo or Versatil?
Not sure… they are synthetic, sizes 6, 10 and 16 I think…
@ Thanks. Check the handle 😄. I’d be surprised if it’s not written on the handle.
0:04 Oh boy, don't get me started! 😂
Loving this. Gaining a lot through watching and hearing about your process.thanks. Happy travels.
After all the failures, a little success is hugely exciting! I painted one today that gave that feeling. I really like the colors and composition I used. Love your child painting with you!
Hi James, glad to find your video. I started when I turned 45. I am still learning and try painting everyday. Great video and I could clearly see that you have talent! Keep it up and hope to seeing more videos
So happy to hear that. I’ll keep it up if you do too! Well done.
I love watching the drawing process ❤
Great!
Amazing drawing process ❤
Thanks
@ your very welcome :)
This really is it...make it easy and just do it👍
Yeah you've got it all wrong.there haven't you?
We live in competitive societies, judgmental! Everything is “the winner”, “rhe best”…. when it comes to art, it’s about “is it good”… in my experience people don’t understand anything about painting, drawing, or anything creative. When I mention I paint (joking say pictures, not walls) I get either a blank look OR “do you sell your work?” ALL ABOUT MONEY AND STATUS, like if “your work sells”, you must be “good”. But have you seen the ugly garbage that “sells”… what’s the point of painting? Apparently selling. No one care about the artist, what inspires, what their paintings mean to them…it;s just “does your work sell”.
You make an excellent point that I can really relate too. Mixing art or creativity with earning an income is something I have not been able to crack. I became a professional photographer once, and by the time I figured out how to make a living from it had completely turned my back on the art. Didn’t touch a camera again for 15 years. Killed it for me.
Really nice work. I like the simplicity, but you’ve captured an inviting aspect of each scene or object. Shoes you don’t need some elaborate scene to make a very appealing sketch.
Thanks. Kind words
Thoroughly enjoyed this. I want to paint or sketch daily, but keep stopping and restarting. I think the smaller format could help. Your work feels so fresh and honest, it’s inspring. Looking forward now to catching up on you previous videos. Thank you for this post.
Good luck. You can do it!
I bet your sister loved the painting! :)
Change is always good, looks nice btw
Looks great brother!
Thanks
Great sky. Love your loose approach.
Thanks
Fantastic, I really enjoyed this video..greetings from Mexico
Thank you. Wow, Mexico!
4:27 “It’s not about talent, it’s about grit.” Grit: that’s my cue to get out of here 😂.
I hope to go and sketch!
1:28 “But it’s a good try” 😂. That is so sweet!
