2024 Arrowhead Hunting Compilation
It’s been a pretty good year! Here is a summary of artifacts found during many miles of walking. It has smokers, heartbreakers and a few oddities. And, as always, a little guitar pickin to go along. I hope you enjoy!

My illustrations that follow are of artifacts either found by myself or various family members. They were all drawn to scale so the circles range in diameter from 1.5-4 inches. They represent a variety of types and ages of arrowheads found in our area. A few of the artifacts had slight damage that I was able to “fix” while rendering them. This is a compilation of artifacts found while surface hunting in Illinois. A rare hardstone adze was probably the best find of the year. Artifacts are shown in situ. You hunt Hampshire? I'm in Huntley and haven't made my way over yonder yet. Any luck with creeks over there?
@@michaeljernigan6094 I have access to three separate farms. One of which has a spring fed creek that runs through it, but it’s narrow. Maybe 10-12’ wide (the running water). Bank to bank maybe 20’. - 30’. Yeah. It’s been pretty decent. I live a block from the Kishwaukee river, and do well in it too.

How did you learn to draw arrowheads like this? If you dont mind me asking.
Thanks for watching and your inquiry. I am an illustrator and art teacher, so really just a lifetime of practice drawing everything under the sun. It is fun to do studies of my personal finds, some that were broken can be “reconstructed” in the illustrations too.

Nice find. I found a big chunky 4.5” knife in Hampshire on the 4th. Can’t figure out the type. Archaic to early woodland would be my guess in age.

I assume you point hunt in Northern Illinois? I'm in Waukesha Co WI and we metal detected the yard of a really old farm. When we were done the farmer said "you gotta put those detectors down and look for arrowheads, they're all over the place (as he pointed to a field). So my son and I are going to go for sure. So basically in our region points are usually the white chert or gray?
Yes, I’m in northern Illinois. All over the place is definitely an exaggeration but they are certainly in your area. It takes time, patience and luck. And getting permission to hunt an area is also a huge advantage! Best wishes to you and your son; it is an awesome way to spend time together and a great learning experience if you find anything. I’d love to hear how it goes!

Wow. Killer find! I’m not far from you, I’m guessing. I watched your tornado video. I had just gotten off 88 at A.G. Made it to Taylor st. Headed west and got out west of Snooks about three miles and caught it there to my north. I figured it must have been up around Rich Rd, but never heard much about it after. I think it formed just north of Malta. Anyway, it’s nice seeing these beautiful artifacts get pulled this close to home. 👍✌️
Glad you enjoyed! One tornado that day was just north of Malta, as you said. The one I filmed was one of 4-5 that formed and dissipated on a path along Rt64. This one was just to the south of Sycamore.

Thank you for the feedback! What makes you so sure out of curiosity? It is tiny, an inch long at most. Were paleo points made that small?
Good question and Paleo points can be small.i actually have found em about 2 in.yours Is super nice.the reason I believe yours is Paleo is due to the flute and the way n which the flute has been made.see how it's thick on both sides.thats to secure a well fitting haftting area.it is also poss later cultures did a copycat as they did that sometimes.but in addition yours also has Paleo flaking it looks.its hard to know for sure whithout more pics and I'm not an expert but I find a ton mostly act Paleo stuff.so that's my opinion I hope it helps
John Doe Thanks again for the feedback! I’m definitely gonna research this more now. I see that folsoms can be very small but the base on this is straight and isn’t concave.
Very welcome.ok question is the base ground .and along the outside edges of the flutes on the sides is it ground smooth or rough.i just rememberd this.but alot of paleo points r ground that way.they make it smooth to keep it from cutting the lashing when halfted. As far as the base your right they r usuallt concave.but ive seen straight ones too.hey check out oversteet guide or point identification .com ans look by region .itll help explain some types features.i also have a book only on paleo stuff.ill look thr it today and see if i can find some more info.
