ABOUT TED'S LIST:
If you are new here... Welcome! I'm Robert Emery, and I’m lucky to have been a professional musician since the age of 16. But if my name is Robert, why is my website called Ted’s List?!?
In 2015 I became a Dad. Teddy entered the world and has since gone on to love music as much as I do. Music is my life and passion, touring the world as a conductor and pianist, performing with the most amazing talents on this planet. But how could I help Teddy’s friends and parents with their musical education?
Ted’s List is the answer.
I have a thriving career as a musician, so I don’t need to ‘sell you’ music lessons or expensive courses to make money. My friends and I can simply give real advice as pro-musicians, and that’s what makes us different.
You can access all of the content without signing up to a single thing. If I could get one ‘result’ from this video, it is getting you to take ACTION. All with the hope that you have music wrapped around you like I’ve done my whole life… It’s what I call my ‘Musical Duvet’.
I hope you find our content helpful; and if you do, like, subscribe and share it with someone who would find this useful. I’m sure it will save you time and money in finding the very best of what you need, for the lowest possible price. And most importantly of all - I hope it inspires you in your music-making.
Leave me a comment and let me know what you think or if you'd like to request a video, that's your place to let me know what you'd like to learn about!

I never wanted to play the violin. I hesitated between viola and cello. I chose the cello, now I'm also thinking about the double bass, but I'm afraid of that transition.

I tried this with the stem of my mouthpiece (French Horn - so about the same size as a pencil), but shiny metal doesn't have enough friction and it slides out with very little pull. A pencil has more friction but I worry that this friction is going to damage the surface of my lips.

If you start on a dreadnought and switch to a Tele it’s like going from insane to beginner difficulty on Call of Duty campaign mode. Electric is MILDLY harder to set up, but as far as actual playing and required dexterity, it’s not even a debate really… is it?

I would just add that one must own an acoustic, but one mustn’t necessarily own an electric.

Enough with the negative Viola comments that people pretend are jokes. I love the sound and that’s why I play it. I also sing Alto which would be a similar place in the music. I could not bear to practice those high frequency sounds of the violin nor play a lot of melody, which is boring to me and another reason I like singing alto. The cello is nice and deep but I don’t want to live that deep. It’s just not my thing you know. I definitely would not want to carry around the large cello and the large base and pay for those large strings! and the instruments cost more and I guess the bows cost more than mine. Even in the orchestra when I hear the violins play it doesn’t sound like real music to me, so I guess those high pitch sounds are just not my style

We're at the point now where similarities outweigh the differences. My current curiosity is sampled as against physically modeled. There are some very plausible software pianos as well but you still need a decent weighted controller keyboard.

I’m a freshman and I have never played an instrument before I’ve only been in choir for 2 years I will be playing the flute in my schools beginning band I am happy we learned sheet music in choir I think it helps a bc I’m already finalice with egbdf and face but I didn’t like reading sheet music in choir I would mess up a lot on more on identifying the time signature and other more advanced stuff and I wanna try band now and I want to be good at sheet music school dosent even start until a few weeks

This works for sax and is impressive. Thaaaaanks a lot man. I was struggling to move to a wider tip opening. Sounds amazing way better for my kinda air support, but my lips die way earlier ahahaha so the embochure is not quite ready yet. Hopefully if the gains continue all will be smooth sailing from here

I agree! As a violist myself, there are so many things the others can do that I can't. But the same goes the other way around. I can do many things that they can't. And there is just something missing in an orchestra without violas.

Viola and double bass. I prefer not to stand out. But between viola and double bass; I choose viola as it is smaller. If I am going for the double bass, then I'll go with bass guitar just for the mobility/portability. Both double bass and electric guitar uses E-A-D-G if I am not mistaken. And both instruments uses bass clef on sheet music.

Viola ftw. I'd say its the second most versatile of the four, it just cant go as low as the cello, but its easier to carry around !

Thank you! I was about to try electric guitar, but after watching this video, I think I am gonna stick with acoustic. I want to play and sing. It’s already complicated as it is, if I add the pedals and all the buttons, It will take away all the fun 😂. I play and sing to relax, I don’t want extra frustration!

Tbh most don’t use the peddles especially casuals, you don’t mess with buttons on the amp while playing, the same as you wouldn’t start messing with the tuning on your acoustic, it acts as a speaker, so it would be the same for the most part as playing acoustic, except with more range with the sounds and songs you can play

The best overall instrument of every instrument type will be whatever instruments that have a Contra-Alto/Bass fundamental pitch from Double E-flat to G Bass, that's EEb/Eb-1 to G1. If it has a dark tone playing it's fundamental pitch, it's Contra-Alto. If it has a deep tone playing its fundamental pitch, it's Bass. That's the only difference between Contra-Alto and Bass is the timbre/tone since they are the same pitch. Contra-Alto/Bass instruments can go really really low and really really high which is why they're the best. They all have atleast a 5 octave range. In that regard, the best valved brass instrument is the F Horn pitched in FF Contra-Alto. The best non valved brass instrument is the Trombone in FF Bass, although the F Horn can still go higher. The best single reed woodwind instrument is the Clarinet in EEb Contra-Alto. The best double reed woodwind instrument is the Bassoon in G Bass. The best non reed woodwind instrument is the Flute in G Contra-Alto. The best string instrument is the Cello in G Bass. These instruments have the most versatility, the richest sound and add the most color vs the other instruments in their class. If you combine them all together in an ensemble full of Contra-Alto/Bass instruments only you will hear a gift from God himself as they can cover almost the entire harmonic series.

It is not in fact the most difficult instrument. But it is VERY difficult compared to most others. But it's older variations can take that honor. But among modern instruments, it is not the most difficult.

Fascinating, thanks for this. Please may I ask for suggestions for how to stop my finger collapsing when playing. I saw your video from 2 years ago, but I am hypermobile, so fingers just bend till they run out of tendon. I use thums and wrist split to help stabilize them but don't want to get injured playing.

    • @robertemeryofficial
      @robertemeryofficial 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

That's a tricky one. Are they collapsing at the joint in between the middle of your finger and your nail? If so, I'm afraid it's just a case of purposefully over-exaggerating the bend in that joint - rinse, and repeat. At some point it'll start to feel natural, and the collapse will feel unnatural. There is no magic trick I'm afraid. Just time, patience, and lots of practice!
