I will post another studio video that shows that vignetting really is a non issue. Surprisingly. Maybe it is worse with the 55? That is why they posted that warning?

    Looks like a nice lens. I have the 65mm macro for Fuji X, and it is really nice, so I expect this is also high quality. The Fujifilm GF Macro is a 120mm f/4, btw. The 110mm f/2 is the portrait lens.

    • @paulschefz
      @paulschefz 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      So far it looks high quality, you are correct, the 120 macro is f4 and the portrait 110 is f2, the 110 macro T/S is f5.6 so this is the closest competition (although the Laowa is f2.8, does macro up to 1:1 and is 1/3 of the price!)

      I am working on part 3 right now, lens looks great. for strictly commercial purposes I would definitely look at the GF as well, I expect everything just being a touch more finished when it comes to handling with the GF but the f2.8 and real 1:1 macro probably make it a better choice for most people

    I am waiting for my lens adapter from Fotodiox for Mamiya 645 lenses to GFX. I am interested in the way you Tilt the lens to achieve focus across all distances in the frame, like you showed in couple of photos. You said - I had to rotate the lens and tilt - what is the actual technique? Can you describe?

    • @paulschefz
      @paulschefz 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I am not familiar with the mamiya adapter but I am sure it works like all the others which means that it will allow the lens to tilt (up to a certain degree) obvioulsy this tilt is only in one direction. lets say the lens is on the adapter, camera is horizontal, and tilt is set to max range, most likely the lens will tilt downwards. turning the camera 90 degrees, the lens wont tilt down but swing to the left (or right depending on which way you rotated the camera) and yes now that exact same movement is called a swing. this is why we need to be able to rotate the lens on the adapter, because this rotation enables you to swing/tilt the lens in any direction you need. this might sound complicated but once you have your adapter, it will be clear. T/S lenses/adapters are limited because they are solid mechanics unlike soft bellows which simply allow to move the lens in any direction (only limited by the coverage of the lens) trust me, it will all make sense. have fun with it!

      yes, couple of things about the mavic 3, when it was released quite a few features were missing, its not as "idiot proof" as the air 3 and it is more expensive. now with updates and lower prices it is the clear choice for image quality (mostly because of sensor size) but overall tech is a little lagging. mavic 4 will come sooner or later, I think that will be the one for me. it wont be cheap though.

Not perfect but the price! I do have high hopes for this laowa, T/S 1:1 for 1200 is pretty crazy IF it comes through! The GFX is a no brainer IMO, there really isn’t anything it can’t do and it easily competes with phase. Thank you! good question. I had the 32-64 really liked it for the little extra width (32) but the 64 was always a little tight, great lens (as they all are) but also big and heavy. 35-70 is just such a great lens, small, light, and clean and sharp, not much "character" (which really none of the fuji lenses have much of, they are just great glissando perform well) 45-105 same, great lens, but a little too tight at the wide end and big and heavy. the astrhori 40 is just a fun lens. light, small, great performance and a little bit of character without ever actually loosing optical clarity, nice flares, but of course you need the time and patience for manual focus. so for me the 35-70 is the go to all around insanely great lens that does it all, the 40 is a fun lens if I feel more artistic and want to compose better and slow down a bit. 35-70 is iPhone shooting, 40 is 8x10 shooting. hope that helps! afaik fuji is coming out with a 32-90 cine-zoom which will cover the range I want in a zoom but it will be powered, probably huge heavy and not cheap.

      yes, dust is always an issue. running a large room air purifier makes a difference, there are really great battery powered air blowers (not canned!) available now, other then that: minimize surfaces (not too many holders, carriers, glass plates,...) and keep negatives clean to start with. I think this way of film scanning is a easier then flatbed or slide scanner, too many surfaces and internal dust.

      @@SkumleRafte as Rainer mentions in the video, he just uses a piece of glass from his epson scanner and a mask. IMO fewer surfaces are better, less glass is better but of course it all depends on the size of the negative and /or how flat it is. I had long discussions about this issue with Rainer before he received his stand and light source, and we agreed that until he has it in place and he could run some tests, it is hard to make a final call. what he has right now works for him. I used to make my own negative carriers for darkroom printing out of matte board (it was impossible to find 6x8 and 6x9 full frame carriers) and that worked. in short: I think as long as the negative is flat and held in place you should be fine. My guess to get the most quality out of the lens is to crop down where the vignetting doesnt occure, which looses about 25mp(77 to go). I am surprised how well they behave once stopped down, a lot of these new releases are optically surprisingly good better? then old adapted glass but of course with that as well most people are looking for flaws and character to add "something" to their photography. or just use GF glass and add flaws (dehancer,...) in post!

      I am in the process of making a video specifically about film scanning with this lens, stay tuned, I will walk through the entire process in depth. as for magnification for 120 film, the GFX sensor is 33x44, so if your negative area is 6x7, you are not even doing 1:1, corners in the 1:2 range (not 2:1!) are clean, most importantly there is no filed curvature to speak of. the lens is great for scanning film. stay tuned.

    Thanks for the review. It's surprisingly hard to find info on gfx coverage for a gfx lens ! My use case would be film scanning, I need greater that 1:1 mag for 24x36 negatives. Do you think at the required mag there would be hard vignettes in the neg? the borders won't matter as much because of the different 2:3 format, but still, i'm wary of buying this lens if I can't fill the frame with 24x36 film

    • @paulschefz
      @paulschefz 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      24x36 on a 33x44 sensor is only slightly more then 1:1 (which has no hard vignetting) and the different format crop should also avoid corners, so I would say you will be fine. I will shoot a video on this topic soon, a friend is working on scanning a lot of film for a book and I mentioned the lens, so he tried it and was blown away by first tests. he will work with larger MF formats but he said just simple test were amazing. stay tuned, I will post as soon as he gets his stand and light (he also ordered the lens but it already seems harder to get)

      Definitely a lens with “character” which makes it fun (in a way) the vignette is easily fixed but that is not what this is about, the Fuji GF solutions are completely different animals and AF obviously makes the entire process of working with them a very different experience.

      the lens does not cover 33x44 (fuji GFX) at 2:1 closest distance. going towards 1:1 the vignette disappears. the lens vignettes again at infinity when closed all the way down (not sure why anyone would use this lens that way). IMO it is still the best macro solution for GFX right now, even if it does not cover completely at closest distance. 2:1 is not always needed and it is perfectly useable (even when stopped down) with a crop. the lens focus field seems to be flat and pretty steady into the corners 1:1 really should not be a problem at all. considering that the fuji gf 120 only does 1:2, the field is extremely curved and the lens is useless with extension rings, this TTArtisan is a dream, especially for the price.
