Gentle Digestive Support Through Grief: Holiday Eating Tips When You've Lost a Loved One
As we approach Christmas, I wanted to share some personal insights and practical tips from my new book, Nourishing Through Loss: A Gentle Holiday Guide. Strategies that continue to help me navigate the challenges of holiday eating and drinking and prevent digestive discomfort that can deeply affect our mood, energy, emotions, and sleep during this emotionally triggering time of year.
The impact of grief on our digestive system is rarely discussed, yet it's so significant. In this video, I share practical approaches that have made a real difference for me - from my first Christmas without Kevin and even now:
✨ Setting healthier boundaries: I've learned the importance of having a clear plan before social events - deciding how much I'll eat or drink, how long I'll stay, and most importantly in acute grief, having an exit strategy when things feel overwhelming.
✨ My 80:20 rule: I stick to my regular routine of three well-balanced meals 80% of the time which gives me the flexibility to go with the flow during holiday celebrations and other social gatherings and events.
✨ Gentle recovery strategies: After those heavy late-night Christmas meals, it's important to know how to help your digestive system recover.
✨ Balancing indulgence with care: The recipes in my book are designed from personal experience, helping to stabilise your blood sugar and therefore also your mood and emotions. This makes the days between celebrations feel much more manageable.
✨ Tuning into your body's wisdom: Simply being more mindful about what, when and how I eat has helped me feel more balanced and in control - something that's especially valuable during the holidays.
While this is your last chance to order the book in time for Christmas, these practical tips and strategies will continue to support your overall wellbeing long after the holiday season has passed.

SURVIVING CHRISTMAS WITHOUT YOUR LOVED ONE - MY TOP TIP NO. 1
As always Sabine, thinking about others and sharing your wonderful ideas. G :)
Thank you, Geraldine, for your lovely comment! It's quite out of my comfort zone, but I really want to inspire others that our loss doesn’t have to define us. I hope you’re keeping well and feeling as well prepared as possible for this holiday season!🥰
Having everything ready like you do on the bench makes it so much easier to cook and assemble. Thankyou!!
Thank you for the exercises
You are very welcome! Hope they help!
please make more of these!
😍😍😍
the stew looks amazing!
Good tip and this is so true. I tend to cook and then just flop on the sofa until the timer goes off to tell me my meal is ready
Hi Caroline! I am glad you've found this tip useful! I didn't use to be tidy and efficient like this. I had to learn this fast when Kevin ended up in hospital with leukemia and I had to look after him, myself, the cat, the house, everything .... I hope you are keeping well and taking good care of yourself! If you need any support, there's lots of free resources on my website. Much love, Sabine
@@sabinehorner thank you Sabine. Chris also had Leukaemia, it was very sudden. Can’t believe it’s been 19 months now since he’s passed. I don’t comment much but I enjoy your videos and they really help me. I cooked tonight and washed up straight away. It’s a nice feeling I can now settle down for the evening knowing I will wake up to a clean kitchen for breakfast 😊
Hi Sabine. Where do you get raw honey from in the uk ? I am having trouble finding it
Hi! You can get Littleover Apiary Honey from Waitrose. Basically, all honey sold as 'organic' is (or should be) raw honey. Hope this helps!
@@sabinehorner thank you! That’s useful to know. Caroline
@@Caroline-Ann1509 You are very welcome!
😊❤
Glad you like it, Erminia! It is a lovely one, isn't it?
I love your ebook. I printed a copy off and have it to refer to in my kitchen 😊
That's so lovely to hear! Thank you for letting me know that you find it so useful! If there is anything you are missing that would be good to know so that I can adapt it over time. Wishing you as good an Easter holiday as it can be under the circumstances! Warmest wishes, Sabine
Thank you for this. I lost my husband almost 6 months ago. I’m finding your videos so helpful even if I don’t always comment
Thank you Sabine. It has been almost 4 months since I lost my husband. I have started cooking evening meals more regularly but I am still not good at eating breakfast or lunch. I just don’t even think about it!
Hi Caroline! I am truly sorry to hear that you are struggling with cooking which is only too understandable. However, I believe you can be truly proud of yourself by doing your best to cook dinner! That's a really good start! If you would like to find out what I did (and still do) to keep to a regular daily meal routine, I have got a webinar coming up this Sunday, from 10-11am, where I am going to share a lot of my own personal practices and coping strategies. You can register here: www.stagcremations.co.uk/nurturinggriefwithsabinehorner. Hope to see you there but you can also watch the replay. If there is anything else, I can help you with, please let me know.
My husband had non Hodgkin lymphoma 10 years ago and was declared free of cancer. Then in June this year he started to feel tired and then he got lower back pain. He ended up in and out of hospital with anaemia until he finally died on 17th September. We were told it was metastatic cancer of unknown primary. They found weak markers for leukaemia but were not able to find the actual cancer type. It was so shocking to lose him so quickly Thank you for your video and I’m looking for tips on how to find the motivation to cook for myself
Hi Caroline! I am truly sorry to hear about your very sudden loss! I am glad, though, you found my Wellbeing Community for Bereaved Partners. Have you had a look at my motivational videos here on TH-cam? About some things that can help motivate us to cook? Colourful food and herbs & spices may be helpful in these early weeks. And anything that you can make really quick like a warm banana smoothie. Smoothies are also easy to digest which is important for you right now. Sending so much love your way!
Nice! Thanks and Good luck!
Love to see more comprehensive and useful videos like this - Thank You Sabine
Thank you for your feedback! Will be doing my best to add some more!
Thanks for this - going to get some cumin seeds and have as much variety and colours in my meals as possible Blessings
Thank you very much for your lovely comment! Hope you'll enjoy getting creative with this recipe!
