I’d love to see Cross Country doing an innovative direct SailRail service from Hull via Leeds and Manchester Victoria to Holyhead, timed with ferry check-in times and arrivals from Dublin, using only first class carraiges - they could do a partnership with Irish Ferries and call it the Irish Flyer across the North of England and North Wales

We did this travel twice, this year and last year. Last year we had the pleasure to sit in an older compartment car (i6 ), but these don't seem to be used anymore. The i11 cars are still great, offering a very good ride quality. Tip for newcomers : you can board the train at the station Bruxelles-Luxembourg for a shorter journey. But it may be more hazardous when looking for a free seat :) Second tip : beware of week-end travels, don't use the older i10 car (which is bike-accessible). It gets overflooded with bikes and it's very difficult to move around, reach the toilet or even exit the car before the terminus.

All they need to do to make this better is change the carriages to mk1s and put a 37,4 at the front

A very long time ago, there were some Belgian trains with a mobile cart service selling drinks and snacks. But that hasn’t been the case since at least 30 years I believe. Understandable since Belgium is a rather small country and few people really travel the whole length of the country. So better get some snacks before getting on board ! Also, the offer you sometimes see in other countries of vending machines in the train, is not available in Belgium and not planned.

These trains are not new and do not have modern equipment. But … they ride very comfortably and are therefore well appreciated.

This train was faster a long time ago. But good news is coming : the major works on thetrack leaving Brussels should speed things up by early 2026. Meanwhile the renovation of the tracks through the dark Ardennes valleys between Namur and Libramont will increase the speed to 140 or 160 km. So lets hope that somewhere in 2029 the new timetable will have good news for the whole of the line.

The only time I've actually enjoyed the scenery on that journey was when I had friends over from the States. Every other time I just crash out as I've used it dozens of times for work lol

Done it on a 10 day tour of Scotland with my family from Ireland from Glasgow to the western isles across to Inverness upto John o groats and everywhere in between one of the best holidays ever 😀

Born and bred in south Manchester but now live in New Zealand. This tour took me down memory lane - first pint, McDonald’s that my Dad used to take me, my university building, Academy where I saw Prodigy, Underworld and Orbital. Past where I first went cinema, Withington village where I’d go library and shopping with me Mam. Flat above Gaffs where I shared a flat at Uni. Countless other memories triggered by one bus ride. Awesome.

Lets see how long they last there.
