Salvator Léonardi (1872-1938) performing his Souvenir de Naples in 1911. Léonardi recorded on the Banjoline, a four stringed mandolin-banjo.

This piece was recorded in the U.S. on Columbia A719 in 1910. This is a later British pressing in immaculate condition, presented here with NO noise reduction!

I made this arrangement to be performed on the PBS American Experience series for the episode "If You Knew Sousa," and have now edited the sheet music for publication.

The first violin/mandolin part of this duet is from a book of solo pieces, King's Original Music for the Violin or Mandolin, published in 1877. It is the earliest music published for the mandolin in the United States that I am aware of. King was most likely Black, as one of the pieces in the book is Emancipation Overture, and there are two Jubas. I thought that this piece would sound more music...

The inspiration for this piece was my work with the dance ensemble, Celtistan, a group of Middle Eastern dancers whose members were all of either Irish, Scotch, Welsh or English descent (hence the name). Kurt Jackisch is one of the few German mandolin soloists in my collection. He recorded 9 sides for Gramophone in Germany in 1911, but this Russian pressing is the only one that I have. I would have bought it, anyway, but I especially wanted it because Raffaele Calace was on the other side!
