Neil Gladd: The Atonal Blues
Your typical blues song is about someone who has lost their man, their woman, their job, their dog. etc. This is a blues song for a contemporary music performer that has lost their grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. It's a niche market...

Yankee Gallop, by George King (1877), and Neil Gladd (2007)
มุมมอง 642 ปีที่แล้ว
The first violin/mandolin part of this duet is from a book of solo pieces, King's Original Music for the Violin or Mandolin, published in 1877. It is the earliest music published for the mandolin in the United States that I am aware of. King was most likely Black, as one of the pieces in the book is Emancipation Overture, and there are two Jubas. I thought that this piece would sound more music...
Neil Gladd: Celtistan's Farewell (2002) for mandolin (melody instrument) and guitar
มุมมอง 1092 ปีที่แล้ว
The inspiration for this piece was my work with the dance ensemble, Celtistan, a group of Middle Eastern dancers whose members were all of either Irish, Scotch, Welsh or English descent (hence the name). I had bought a few books of Middle Eastern dance tunes to play for them on the mandolin, then decided to write a piece for them. Considering their backgrounds, I decided to take Carolan's Farew...
Neil Gladd: Carousel Waltz (2002) for mandolin and guitar
มุมมอง 1302 ปีที่แล้ว
This piece is my first foray into "film music," although the short film it was written for was never made. It was to be about a couple that goes to the beach on holiday, but it rains the entire time, so they are shut up in a room together, getting on each other's nerves. I was asked for "A Coney Island feeling, but a little off kilter," so I wrote a carousel waltz. It was originally composed fo...

Kurt Jackisch is one of the few German mandolin soloists in my collection. He recorded 9 sides for Gramophone in Germany in 1911, but this Russian pressing is the only one that I have. I would have bought it, anyway, but I especially wanted it because Raffaele Calace was on the other side!

Thank you!
A cheery march to brighten any day! Mille Grazie maestro!
You're welcome, Gus! Alfieri is becoming my favorite mandolinist, as his recordings always make me smile!
Hi Neil, the name of the composer is Carl Henze (de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Henze) - Thanks for the recording!
Thanks, Michael! I know Carl Henze, I just made a typing mistake! (Corrected)

Great!
Incredible find!
Reminded me of that Italian band as General Patton walked up the steps to kiss the Bishops ring in Palermo!
Brava Marjorie Bunday and Bravo Neil Gladd for performing such excellent work!

@@admin-qh8yt Thank you. It is nice that people still enjoy my grandfathers music. We have live recordings. Hopefully one day we will get them restored. Yes he would be a Slash or a Hendrix. Thanks Bobby
Thank you for these gems. I hope you will upload more 🥰

Nice music!
Really nice!
Wonderful performance! Soprano and mandolin, who would have imagined that! Not me, thats for sure. Is there a lot of music for this combination available?
Nice pieces. Interesting work!
Marvelous, Neil!
Neil, I love your performance of my father's work! You really brought out the expressive intensity of his playing!! Thank you so much for all you've done to preserve and promote my father's works, as well as his vision for the mandolin as a valid instrument in the classical realm.
Hello, I’ve been studying the Mandolin for about 5 years now and I’ve been trying to locate tabs for some of Sousa’s marches. Is your arraignment for sale? Thanks.
Love this! Bravo Neil!!!
Neil, thank you for your reply. One day I would like to hear the entire opera. Its importance is the following. In 1796 an opera troupe made their way from Havana to New Orleans to perform Sylvain. This was the first time an entire opera was ever performed in the Northern Hemisphere, and certainly the first opera performed in New Orleans. While there was no commemoration of Sylvain in 1996, there is now a restaurant named Sylvain located on the site of the original theatre where it was performed.
I wondered why this aria was chosen? The entire opera is of major importance in the history of opera in North American, and especially in New Orleans. Indeed, there is a restaurant in the French Quarter named for this opera.
This was in a collection of arias by different composers that were arranged with mandolin accompaniment and published in the 18th century. This was the only aria from this opera in the book, and one of the best pieces.
nice
@mtessi20 - Thanks! I didn't pay a commission, but I did ask Elizabeth to write it. This is actually her third piece for the mandolin. The first, for mandolin and piano, was published back in the 80s. The second was for electric mandolin and piano, and was primarily arrangements of other pieces she had written, but had one new movement for solo electric mandolin called Electric Bebop!
Very engaging piece and performance. Did you commission it? CHeers Mark R-T
Lovely!
Very nice! Thanks for sharing,
What a WONDERFUL performance! Had it not been for the post-inaugural madness in D.C., I'd have done anything to attend in person. Marj and Neil are a thrill to listen to. Bravi!
A most enjoyable video of a charming piece. Thanks for sharing your performance here.
A very nice performance that I have enjoyed tremendously! Thanks for bringing Seth Weeks' music for mandolin under our attention; very interesting!
