Kayaking the Alafia River - Alderman's Ford to Lithia Springs

This is a fun and beautiful trip down the historic Alafia River. A one way downstream trip so you'll need to provide a shuttle at the take out point at Lithia Springs Park. Plan for 3 to 4 hours if paddling casually. There is a potential small spot to take a break at around the halfway point at Turkey Creek but could be hard to stop there if the water levels are high. I've had this kayak a few months so thought it was time to do a review on it. I'm really satisfied with this wonderful kayak. Much easier to haul and great for most all size paddlers. If you're a fisherman and want a quick throw and go kayak this may be for you. Or if you're a recreational paddler and like the huge storage and great design you'll also like it.

DIY Harbor Freight Kayak Trailer under $600
Theres more trash on The bottom of that river I have ever seen. Was scuba diving and it was everywhere.
Thinking of moving to Parrish and was planning on making this my weekend activities. Thanks!
Thank you for making this video! I bought the hubby a kayak hoist years ago before I knew anything about kayaks. The one he ended up getting is huge and super heavy. I was going to surprise him with installing the hoist. However, the surprise might have been a damaged car hood. I appreciate you making this video so I can rethink my plans. 😃
Thank you for the comments. Safety first and foremost. Good luck with the hoist and Happy Holidays!
Brother apparently there is a spring there, do you know of anything?
I wasn’t aware of that, no. Interesting.
I’ve visited it before all you have to do is paddle up the creek and when you smell rotten eggs you will know you’ve found it. It looks like a big dark hole in the middle and you can see a small boil around it.
@@Floridaspringexplorer up trout creek from this launch here?
@@thecringeman7697 Yes you can launch from trout creek conservation park and paddle up trout creek to reach the spring or you could hike it in from the side though Ive yet to do that.
@@Floridaspringexplorer thanks bro! I'm going to do this when its dry , hopefully the spring will be very clear
Would you think this trailer fits a 17 long canoe ?
I’ve put a friend’s 16.5 ft canoe on it with my 10.5 kayak and worked fine.
Good info. How do you secure your trailer from theft while kayaking? Thanks!
The trailer hitch has a padlock hole when attached to the ball. I also use a locking pin on the hitch itself as well. So far so good.
This trailer is now $1,500 at my local retailer
Too much weight and expense. Why not use simple pvc runners?
I have a Grumman 19 foot canoe. The old trailer is finished. I need a new one. Will my canoe fit?
I’ve put my buddy’s 17’ canoe and my kayak just fine. I think it would fit and just stick out the end a little more.
@@crixus1032 Thank you. My old trailer is getting too old and I worry about safety with it. Appreciate your reply
The hull design certainly helps make this one of the most stable kayaks I have seen.
I got 2 new trailers like this, same model . Will sell eqch for 500$. Brand New. Im located in Huntington Beach CA
Still available?
Do you still have them for $500?
I bought the same trailer last week for 460 and it was on sale 🥲
The bucklers are gone now on the new kits. There’s an improved set of multi position web straps now.
Good to know and glad they're finally improving that design - thanks!
I actually am in the process of installing a new one right now and when I saw this video I was confused about the buckle. I definitely wouldn't have bought this kit if they still had that feature! Glad they upgraded. Also I'm pretty sure the rope is 3/8" now too.
Thank you for this!
Great video, wondering if any corrosion if launch & reload into & out of saltwater . Great video.
Thanks for the comment. I would only consider galvanized or aluminum if using in or near salt water. I’ve since sold this trailer but not before I had to replace all the cross members that rusted badly after a couple years stored in my back yard.
@@crixus1032 Thanks, great advice
Hi, good vid. I used Loctite glue on all my bolt threads. Some of them were spinning off going down the hwy due to vibration..use Loctite.
Thank you for this video. Good overview. Will you please do an update? Are you happy with the trailer? I like this trailer and the price is good.
I no longer have this trailer and sold it. Many of the cross members rusted badly after a few years and I had to replace and then sand and repaint the whole trailer. The cross members were only like $12 each but now this trailer is $500 or so. Unless budget is your biggest issue I would spend more and get a galvanized trailer. Check out my other video on mine. Was $1000 and I just love it!
@@crixus1032 I was asking about the Continental.Which you still seem to like.
@@jonathanmartin8517 oh I’m sorry. I’m very happy with the Continental. Rides so smooth and with the upgraded tires I can easily do 70 mph and don’t even know it’s there. No rust either and lights are great. I highly recommend.
@@crixus1032 Ok. I was like "oh no" when I first read your reply. I REALLY appreciate your response. I'm going to try and track down one of those. I'll try calling the factory tomorrow. Thanks again.
@@crixus1032 I'm in North Carolina. I plan to transport a 17' Grumman double ended canoe.
these are 500 now :(
Link to the tires you bought? Thanks! Also can they be used on a harbor freight trailer?
I actually called and spoke to a gentleman who guided me to the tires so I don't have a link handy. I would call and ask about the Harbor Freight question and I'll bet he'll know the answer to that too. Thanks and good luck!
I was thinking about taking my paddleboard out there with a couple of friends. Do you think that the paddle will be ok or too shallow or debris in a lot of areas for a paddleboard?
I’ve never seen anyone paddle board there and I’ve never paddle boarded so not completely sure. The Alafia water levels change rapidly and the current can be pretty swift sometimes so I can’t be sure how safe that would be on a paddle board.
i strongly suggest spare tire. recently we had a flat on the way to taking flood victim supplies and had to leave the trailer. we came back to it being gone. stolen. even had it locked. no good deed goes unpunished.
What kind of trailer is that?
Continental EC2K12
I have another video on that trailer
Thanks for sharing your tips. Yes, you got that right, trying to reload a kayak after a day of paddling does in fact take all the fun out of the day. LOL. Especially when one is 5'2 and 65 years old. LOL
weight?
Just bought this same one but it was $499 thanks to inflation. Now what changed between 2018 and 2022.... Let's go, Brandon!
I noticed that big price jump shortly after I bought mine in 2017. Just keep it dry and out of the weather as much as you can. It will rust fairly quickly otherwise as I found out.
Awesome video! I am new to the TH-cam community and wondering if you have any feedback for me and my channel/videos? Thanks!
How early did you get started?
Around 10:00am or so and off the water by 1pm
One of my favorite spots. I've seen gators there more often than not.
is this the 8ft or 12ft trailer?
4 x 8 ft.
Nice job!
I bought the same trailer from Advantage Trailer, I took delivery in August. I had to tighten up some bolts after I brought it home. I lost 2 bolts on the trip home. I texted pictures of the holes where the bolts were supposed to be to the dealer after I spoke with them on the phone. They promptly sent me the missing bolts. I keep my speed at 65 mph or lower with the trailer. It pulls nicely. I replaced my safety chains because I needed longer ones with a 6" drop hitch that sticks out about 8". I was looking for the Harbor Freight trailer for over 9 months and got fed up due to the lack of availability and ended up with the Continental EC2K12. All in all, I am happier with the Continental because it is galvanized and the wiring has marine connections, something the H.F. trailer doesn't have.
Heading there in a few weeks. Great video and suggestions! THANKS!
Huge help
Can u rent kayaks here
I don’t think so but try Canoe Outpost. I saw on their website they may do planned trips here.
not there but zoffingers does not far from there
i am between a pungo 120 and this one. mostly on a gentle river and some lakes, what do you think?
The Pungo is great and the only reason I didn’t buy it was I wanted a frame back seat as I’m fairly tall and wanted a little more support on longer trips. The Pungo is a little more nimble than the EX123. Always a trade off but lean towards whatever is most important to your own needs.
I love mine. I don't fish out of it either but it would be great for fishing. This thing is slow though. You can't really call it a touring kayak honestly. In no way, shape or form is this thing even on the same level as my Wilderness Systems Tsunami. I got this for kayak camping with my dog since the cock pit is huge and the weight capacity is high. Also a good boat for family members that might not have the best balance as it is VERY stable. This is really just a fishing/recreational boat hybrid. It can do rapids but getting this thing over 2.5 mph you're going to be doing a lot of work versus a true touring kayak that can do 4 - 4.5 more with moderate paddling. It is still a great kayak, most of the reviews I watched I felt the speed they all claimed was misleading. The seat is comfortable. That rear hatch is huge for bulky items and can cram a lot of camping gear in their. Can also cram some dry bags in the front. It cuts water very well but the two pontoon style section where it starts is where it's speed gets killed. Dashboard was great, dry storage box is splash proof. Beer cans fit well in the cup holders with out worrying about it tipping going down some class 1 rapids. If speed isn't a issue this is a GREAT kayak still. Just expect to do about 2 to 2.5 mph at a moderate pace.
Can't wait to throw my canoe on there and go on another florida trip with you.
These particular hoists are rated for 60 lbs and you said your Kayak was 75 lbs. I agree with other posters. Why not just buy a beefier hoist rather than replace many of the parts, which seems like a more expensive option. I am also not sure what you did at the ceiling there. Screwing the brackets into a board screwed to the ceiling is actually less strong than screwing through the drywall into the joist ( and a lot uglier) It's still 4 lag bolts- 2 per bracket- either way. The one thing I will do is tie the two hangers together to keep them from spreading- but above the kayaks not under. If I am worried, I'll add a rope or bungee under the kayak to the ceiling for the winter.
Thanks for the comments. At the time I didn’t see any heavy duty hoists and they all seemed the same. The 2 x 4 does have 4 3 1/2 to 4 inch lags through the drywall and into the joists. The instructions said to use two so doubling seemed a better idea. You’re right that a rope at the top rather than underneath is better and I’ve been doing that for some time.
I’m in the market for a Kayak hoist. The only two I’ve seen commercially available are this one from Storeyourboard, the “Classic” and their other one, the “Pro”. They are basically the same, except the Pro does not have hooks, but uses a box frame arrangement to attach the lifting straps to the “falls” on the hoist. Additionally, the Pro has a centre strap to stop the lifting straps from walking along the Kayak. They are both rated to 60lbs. The upgrade mods you have done are ok, but the pulleys, brackets, hooks and hardware are still original - a system is only as good as it’s weakest link/s. It could be argued that with a 4:1 mechanical advantage the original rope (rated to 120 lbs?) was operating well under its rated load, and the lifting straps on each end of were only lifting 30 lbs (if the Kayak weight was 60 lbs. Anyways, it doesn’t hurt to upgrade some of the components. I’d be interested to know of the name of this company that sell a “beefier hoist”
Dude you're talking about strength in the 2-inch bull rope is. Do you have any idea how strong that material is? It's essentially the same thing as your seatbelt. It requires hundreds of pounds of force to tear it period. Why do you think tie down straps are so strong even though they're made from the same material it's about the weave. I have a set of 1-inch tie-down ratchets that have a 500 lb load Force. So two inches are probably well over 800 lb. Those hammock straps that you bought are essentially the same thing but with a different weave that's why it had to be thicker to reach that 800 pound load. The other reason that they make the hammock straps sticker is because of the multiple tie-off points and rubbing against tree bark and such. I don't think your kayak is going to be doing much rubbing. The belt itself would never have torn under 75 lb LOL actually half of that since each strap would be supporting half of the overall weight. So you're worried that your boat is going to fall because you don't think that that strap apparently could hold 37.5 lb. Hell you could probably hoist a 75 lb kayak with jute twine LOL. Or better yet go and get some 550 paracord for $5 a bundle for a 50 foot length of it at Walmart. I clicked on this video really thinking I was going to see something Innovative. And all I saw was somebody over engineering something that doesn't need that much thought. Each of those pulleys divided Force by about half. A4 pulley system on a 75 lb kayak is literally lifting 18.75 pounds per pulley and each of the termination points only lifting half of the overall weight at 37.5 pounds per termination, so you over-engineered this for what reason🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂. Give me a two-by-four, four 1 and 1/4 inch clothesline pulleys from walmart, a bundle of paracord. Three .97 Cent carabiners from Walmart. Two 50 lb eyebolts. A couple of 4in screws with fisheye washers. A steel ring , And an old tie down and I'll make the entire system for $25.
Thanks for the comments. But I wasn’t worried so much about the strength of the existing strap itself as much as I am of the cheap plastic buckle. That is the weak link in the kit as I’ve seen many comments on that breaking. Also the original rope easily frays as mine started to do so replaced it with a better one. I’m sure there are many ways to improve upon that original method as you suggested. What I did was inexpensive and easy. Sounds like your suggestion also a good one for the same price. Cheers.
anyone looking at buying this trailer for a kayak few things I found out that no one talks about is the trailer bounces like crazy the suspension is very stiff and its leaf springs are very loud on bumps on potholes so if you have an expensive kayak like I do few things I did lowering the tire pressure to 20psi and remove the smallest leaf spring from the suspension on each side , that will make a little better other wise is like putting you kayak on a wagon with wooden wheels , something to think about .
3rd video I see saying its under $300 its priced at $499 right now
Yes they’ve really jacked up the price over the last couple of years. I bought mine for $279.
The wire tubing was a genius idea. I was thinking along those lines but saw your video before I worked it out. Bought two packages, 14' long, 1/2" diameter, from Harbor Freight. Used it all, including all the way to the connector. Half-inch accepts 4 wires easily and 5 can fit. The tubing fit thru pre-drilled holes on the frame. About eye bolts, I plan to carry lumber or general hauling and also wanted hook and rope-friendly tie-downs. I wanted to preserve the option to use the stake pockets and I wanted tie-downs attached firmly to the frame, so replaced one of the bolts holding on each of the stake pockets with an eye bolt.
Hey mate, are you happy with your decision with the EX123 over the Pungo? Also can I ask if you’re able to car top the EX123 yourself? Thanks!
I love the EX123 so far and have had it on a handful of trips so far. I’ve car topped it a few times and only a few lbs heavier than the Pungo so not a noticeable difference. IMO you get a slightly more comfortable seat than the Pungo because of the framed seat. Particularly if you’re a taller paddler like me.
@@crixus1032 thanks very much!
Concise, reasoned description. Ive looked at this option a lot and I think this convinces me.
Thanks. Great video. I was looking for ideas and love yours!!!!!
Here's a link to the Hydrologic chart at Litha Springs Park - water.weather.gov/ahps2/hydrograph.php?wfo=tbw&gage=litf1
Will the trailer still fold up with the would on it?
I believe it would but would be much heavier and the caster wheels would be a concern as they’re not real heavy duty IMO
They are 500 now
Thanks James and you're right. Mine was $279 4 years ago so almost has doubled in price since then. I also want to comment that since building this I've had to order and replace the cross bars due to rust. The parts weren't that expensive (about $11 each) but if you keep a steel trailer outside and especially in Florida like I do you'll need to keep an eye on the rust.
Guy who buys the cheapest hoist is worried about it’s quality.
Ok, but you didn’t account for asteroids striking nearby…
