I rotate the wires one prong, then I know exactly where to point the vacuum booster and not worry about looking at the degree marks.
Before you tighten the distributor. Turn the key to run, take nuber one lead and earth it against the block. Turn the distributor anticlockwise until the lead sparks. Do it a couple times so you get the dizzy stopped dead on spark and bolt it down. This works with points and aftermarket electronic ignition systems. like crane electronic ignition.
Old school stuff there. I used to preset mine at 8.
Tdc cylinder 1 to line your rotor up so as piston is full compression the spark ignites at max compression. If retard it is sending unspent burnt fuel out the intake.
Oh stop being ridiculous. Put it on tdc. Start the fking car. Warm it up then set the timing. You're making things stupid just to seem intelligent. Here's a tip. Keep it simple stupid. Oh and none of that is relevant anymore anyway. Go ahead and play shade tree shit putting chains on an Audi q7. 🤣🤣 Just bc ppl are old doesn't mean they're wise.
Never built an engine without doing this. I don’t know how this video is even a thing
My FE 390 10:1 runs like a stripped ape using this
Is that timing advance?
@@user-we5mi6zl2s yes
Now big block it goes up to 16 erase all up there to about 1 5 usually they run pretty good
Cuz if you own small block if you ain't got that aftermarket time machine cover and you got a factory time change cover it only go up to 12
Big block around about 15 to 16
Big block around about
Small block small block times about 11 to 12
I have never see 3 hump heads before, anybody know what that means?

I wish I didn't sell my 70 firebird back In 1988!! I had the chance to buy it back in 1999 but when I got there they had just taken a payment through western union from Texas the person bought it site unseen 4000.00 the car is probably worth 15k now
How many times are you gonna make the poor guy say the same thing over and over. I’m surprised steam didn’t start pouring right out of his ears.
Love that idle
Trans Am make it from smoking bandits
Let it run for an hour or two but make sure all the doors and windows are closed
@@alfredomartinez6347 we did, apparently we are all impervious to carbon monoxide how neat is that ?
This guy is the real deal. This is a real mechanic thank you. I wish I would've had this video about six months ago when I was working on my 1990 bronco I couldn't figure out the timing for the life of me, but I ended up figuring it out, but this video would have been useful. Lol
@@trxtech3010 we appreciate it and we go live on Fridays at 6pm est on tiktok and here.
When I was a little guy I was a big fan of AMC cars but not so much anymore. Good to see one still on this side of the scrapyard.
It is only common sense... but common sense is flower that don't grow in everyone's garden!
This man speaks with ALL the knowledge that anyone needs , I learned this method after my first engine fuck up ( 40 years ago ) , since then this is a tried and true method for almost instantly getting a new fresh engine started, make sure the carburetor has fuel ⛽️ and the timing is closely set and fire it up , the engine will start in a quarter turn of the fan blade and bring up rpm’s to 2200-2300 for 20-30 minutes to break the cam in ( if it’s flat tappet mechanical ) roller cams don’t require this much fuss , this should be the hot rodders gospel 😊
@@edhortensius1468 Allan has been doing this for a long time we appreciate the positive and honest feedback, hopefully you follow along as we grow our channel.
Problem with this is the guy that's not educated on how much initial timing a distributor has verse total timing with vacuum advance without vacuum advance with mechanical advance without mechanical advance with fully locked distributor with out fully locked distributor. These different setup types of distributors alll play different roll to keep the engine running perfectly or running poorly. U should explain that. Alot people that do new builds or that our new to doing budget build struggle in this area they never get the engine running correctly because the lack of knowledge in this area.
@@jackbuhring7945 excellent point, also a lot of guys will over cam/carb their engines, overlap sounds great but to much if anything can be a bad thing.
@@jackbuhring7945 also we are running the adjustable vaccume advance once we get the power valves done we should be able to idle it down more and get about 32-34 degrees total timing
Thats a good one 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
@@edbeck8925 thank you
I used to set my timing on the harmonic balancer put a ohms meter across the points and adjust the distributor until the needle started to Flickr, started and ran every time
Power valve is the main circuit, not idle.
Vacuum advance doesn't have any effect until the engine is running.
@@kimdearrington258 that's correct
Someone's going to have to explain how you set the timing before you're even running the motor and checking it with a timing light!! it ain't going to happen.. .
@@bobadingo its called static timing, the engine fired right up and runs great
That's what I do and then I time it by ear I only use the light as a reference and I go by 2° increments until I feel it's right.
@@kramer4855 hell yeah that's oldskool
What year Firebird is it? I’ve never seen T-tops on the 70-73 before. It also has a Camaro 70-73 spoiler.
@@nessie42786 it's a 1971 firebird sat abandoned outside for 25 years. The previous owner did the T top roof swap and the Camaro spoiler. It was painted purple at some point but nature took its course and faded it to what you see now.

When you gonna turn the camera back upright?
@@BobbyTucker working on it, getting a new platform to record and edit from other then my phone.
Oldsmobile is 20
He meant to say number 1 16 deg btdc on the compression stroke and the distributor must be pointed neer number 1 but more importantly the reluctor aligned.
Run at 87 octane should have no detonation. Only retard it just enough to avoid detonation.
