Reimagining the CSS Bass Module - a full build log from the CSS Custom Shop
มุมมอง 16Kหลายเดือนก่อน
The original CSS Bass Module is great. It turns a 2-way speaker into a 3-way speaker, extends bass response down to 25Hz, reduces midrange distortion, yada, yada, yada - but is it too clunky? In this video we explore a new, smaller cabinet design that better complements the matching bookshelf speaker but retains almost all of the benefits. It is nowhere near helpful for other people, like me, wanting to build their own speakers. @Artcore103 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Wait so you don't have a dedicated tweeter, just a coax in the middle? That's SOO far from ideal, since coax drivers have serious significant compromises in their design that hurts tweeter performance... The best of the best ones like KEF and MOFI and maybe satori do well and come reasonably close to dedicated tweeter performance, but outside of that, none do. You might be able to EQ them ok on axis but they all suffer from diffraction, plus the Doppler type effects of the woofer, which is the waveguide, moving at higher spls. It also will not be able to keep up volume wise with a speaker this large and with this many drivers, meaning if you test the distortion and SPL limits the tweeter is going to be the limiting factor here in distortion and compression at higher volumes. Looks great though, amazing work, I would just design it differently. If one of the main goals was having a point source through the vocal range, or the majority of it, there's other ways to achieve this, like a large horn, or a large planar/folded ribbon type speaker, or a large waveguide with the right tweeter selection, all of those could provide you a crossover between 500-1khz depending on your choice.

    • @css_audio
      @css_audio 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for your opinion but I disagree on many fronts. ALL SPEAKERS are compromises. There is no perfect driver or speaker and we use them to best attain our design goals for the given application. there are other good coax drivers outside of the 3 you mentioned. In terms of doppler distortion, that isn't really a concern when you are using a coax as a midrange driver crossed where I have it. There is no real excursion demand on this midrange woofer to cause this problem. In terms of diffraction, all studies I have seen point to diffraction being essentially inaudible. Many of the proposed changes you suggest have their own significant compromises. Large planar and ribbon designs have significant vertical dispersion issues, basically relegating you to a very narrow seated window without moving your head more than an inch or two. They also tend to have large on axis frequency response deviations and often suffer from high distortion at the low end making their actual useable response limited. A waveguide large enough to cross as low as you are suggesting would increase the overall cabinet in both the vertical and horizontal directions in a significant way. We have an event next weekend (September 28) and you are more than welcome to come hear them for yourself.

    I appreciate the video HOWEVER you're looking at nearly doubling your budget with a quality crossover network and binding posts to match the caliber of speaker you made, so a bit misleading. I'll also agree with others that I think a proper tweeter and mid MAY have been a better choice than a full range pro mid. Maybe you can handle that with your crossover?

    • @css_audio
      @css_audio 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I see your point but double would be a lot more than I would expect to spend on this. I think $500 for the crossover is probably about what it will cost. As for the driver, it is a coax, not a full range. It has a tweeter inside the midrange driver under the dust cap, which isn't a real dust cap, it's an acoustically transparent material. It will be a 3-way crossover.

    Wondering if there is a sonic/measurable difference if the passive radiator and active driver are on opposite sides of the cabinet? Would there be a pseudo-cardiod response?

    • @css_audio
      @css_audio 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      There would be no difference, since the 2 radiators are operating in different frequency bands and the passive radiator especially is operating at such low wavelengths, the 1 ft difference in relative position would not make a noticeable difference in the summation.

    It looks beautiful. How the box looks isn't my priority, although I prefer not looking at something unfinished. I built my subwoofer box (36" x 14" x 18") with opposed 10" drivers and a plate amp. I prefer dual 15" woofers in my speakers so they can play LOUD without distorting while remaining natural sounding. I build tiny houses as a side gig.

    Nice video. Normal MDF isn't as "seasonally stable" as you think but in a square box scenario it's fine. While building my own speakers which are made from 64 layers of MDF to make a cabinet shape similar to B&W 802s, normal MDF shrank and cracked like you wouldn't believe. Using Shellac-base primer as soon as possible helped but they still cracked. The last pair I built, which I'm still using 3 years later are made from moisture resistant MDF. It really is stable as hell and I wouldn't use anything else. I think it's also a bit heaver/denser than normal MDF too. I'm watching these videos again as I'm getting the itch for building a new pair. I've got a couple of ICE plate amps to go in the next pair.

    I thought wiring in series screws the damping factor.

    • @css_audio
      @css_audio 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Damping factor goes up when impedance goes up. DF = Zload/Zsource. Higher damping factor is generally considered better. With that said, this is a series-parallel arrangement. The impedance is a bit lower than the original single driver due to having 3 in parallel and then that in series with the other 3.

    • @Andrew-rc3vh
      @Andrew-rc3vh 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@css_audio It's the back EMF which stops the speaker cone resonating. It is why you use very thick speaker cables and hefty output transistors, so the back EMF is shorted out and gives you critical damping. The series speakers reduces this effect by the ratio of the output impedance of the amp which is very low and that extra few ohms with the series speaker. What I would do is drive the speakers banks in parallel with separate amps. I like the idea of an integrated amp so you have a very short speaker wiring path. The draw back is it will add to the weight of the speakers, but who really cares about that.

    I think you should start building generic base modules which people can use on their existing bookshelf speakers irrespective of the brand of the speakers

    • @css_audio
      @css_audio 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      This Bass Module actually works well for that application because at the low crossover frequency where wavelengths are longer, phase mismatches due to positional differences aren't really an issue, so this crossover works well with other 8 ohm top speakers. The only issue to watch out for is the potential sensitivity mismatch - and the easy fix here is to add another resistive component to the crossover if the top speaker is more sensitive than our 1TD-X.

    For a relatively expensive build, why not use high end wires? I have used Neotech 12 awg stranded UP-OCC copper hookup wires in my 1TDX for the binding posts and woofer, and 18 awg UP-OCC silver wire for the tweeter connection with excellent results. Of course, the binding posts were upgraded too - cardas CCBP pure copper binding posts being an excellent choice.
