Transforming a Harbor Freight Tool Greenhouse into a Powerhouse Compost Heated “Hobbit Hole”
Come join us on the next level of our harbor freight greenhouses! We are covering the compost walls with plastic. Now plastic over the warm composting activity is trapped and hyper insulating what I believe is the most perfect Hobbit Hole Greenhouses heated by compost! All on a dime. We have documented and video taped this to teach and inspire. The 10 foot Avocado tree loving the 80 degrees inside yesterday while only 44 outside! This saves a total of 150$ a month on three of these greenhouses to heat and brings in thousands of free red Wiggler worms. A PERFECT USE for all of the bags of leaves in your homestead instead of the landfill.

Only video i have seen with people using compost to heat greenhouse! 👍👍👍
@@kccorliss3922 good because I have 40 videos already made yet to release. The next one heating greenhouses with inside black walls of water. 😊👍🔥
I've seen a handful of people heat their greenhouses in different ways with compost, but it's a compost pile in the back corner inside of their greenhouse, or it's some intricate set of tubes with a massive pile outside to cycle air
@ awesome comments. Lots of very smart minds trying to tackle the dream of passively heating a greenhouse inexpensively. Our next video will focus on our black water walls inside that add extra heat and heat.
@@kccorliss3922 "EarthDwellers Homestead" used the compost system outside with tubes & fans to cycle the air, and "Edible Acres" put his compost inside of his greenhouse... It might have been a chicken greenhouse, but Midgley's Hobbit Greenhouse looks to be the best, unless you're going to spend tens of thousands of dollars to make a wallapini / sunken greenhouse...

Hey friends. This is zone 6 West part of Syracuse Utah on the great salt lake bay. The warmer parts of the Salt Lake Valley are a zone 7 and 7b. This is a colder low lying spot.
Hello do you turn your compost piles?

Do you have a book on how you get started and maintain or even PDF files? I live in Michigan zone 5b and want to do Mayer lemon tree, grapefruit and maybe avocado if that would even be possible.
Depending on the area, but this would draw in soooo many termites.
call me crazy...wouldn't you have a problem with that anyway in certain areas...because, trees are wood. i understand how more wood would possibly be worse, but if you're in those areas idk how much it'd change, just difference in quantity of wood.
unfortunately its impossible to get that amount of woodchips on any sizeable orchard. especially in, well, a desert and all.
Not impossible. Just lots of work.

Terrific video, You’re doing some incredible stuff and showing how accessible it can be. But getting help at Home Depot, that’s just a fantasy 😂
I apologize, I haven’t had the chance to watch all of your videos yet. I know you mentioned you often use grass clippings and wood chips. Do you mix anything else in the compost?
I believe the entire farm and backyard should be a working compost pile. We are a drop off spot for Woodchips, leaves and grass. New videos will illustrate what we do with the leaves to harvest vegetables all winter.
@@chadsproduce thanks Chad! I appreciate your videos and the knowledge you share I will be planting trees next spring! I love your method, one of the best and off grid friendly, unlike many other designs that require a large amount of electricity!

Are the woodchips and straw just along the outside of the greenhouse, or is it inside too? I have a small 8x8 hobby greenhouse in zone 7b with a river rock base. I'm brainstorming on how to bring compost inside to provide additional heat...maybe in black plastic trash bags?? Thoughts? Thank you for the fascinating videos!!
@@emilymimikos4756 I will have a video out tomorrow morning going over this more in detail. This video will do both. You get great insulation with it on the outside.
@chadsproduce thanks so much for your response! Looking forward to watching the video. 😁
@@emilymimikos4756 just released now. Let me know what you think. Is a Part 1.
@@chadsproduce really great. It's helping me brainstorm how to apply it to our setup. I'm Thinking about using our wiggle wire to create a plastic "wing" on the north side of the greenhouse with wood chips/compost underneath and then black, plastic bags inside the greenhouse full of leaves. 🤔
@ awesome ideas. I love it. This is just part 1. Just finished video taping part 2. Thanks for watching.
have you ever tried to utilize sealed tubes/pipes for geothermal passive "heat" for you greenhouses? It can be done without a Radon pump!
@@rjaquaponics9266 I saw a setup like this yesterday in Hennifer Utah. Mind blowing awesome. Tell me more…
do you have issues with snakes or rodents? I brought woodchips in about a decade ago and had a huge population of snakes move in.
@@sarahpauline4904 good question. We have 20 hobbit hole greenhouses on five farms in metro Salt Lake Wasatch Front of almost three million people. Utah has a catch and release program to encourage cat adoption of feral kitties. Works like magic and each farm has at least one kitty. They are all fixed and become tame like pets. No mice 🐭 have never seen a snake inside these devices. Before the kitties we had issues and had to use poison which they don’t even make any longer.
Amazing stuff. When will the figs go dormant in this environment? Will they drop those fruits they are putting on?
We haven’t ever been in this situation with a greenhouse quadruple covered. Usually the fruits and leaves hold into December if the greenhouse is decent. Crossing fingers.
👍👍👍👍👍👍
West Bountiful... More Like Sooo Bountiful 😂🎉
@@austintrees in my experience growing Bountiful Utah is the best area to grow in. Incredible soil and warmer climate. What zone are you in ? Ohio zone?
@chadsproduce formerly 5b, but the update changed us to 6a, we are in the tiny area of central northwestern Ohio that fell into 5b, only difference we saw is that the snow didn't melt as fast as the lower elevations surrounding us.
@@austintreesyour probably very similar to us. We just don’t get the Arctic plunges that you get. You could be warmer than us if we don’t factor that in.
Are the figs self-polinated?
@WaldemarSzmuro I believe most figs are, the figs that we grow in the United States aren't the ones that are pollinated by a wasp going inside. They're technically a flower that is inverted I believe... There are people who inject pollen into the insides of the fig in order to cross pollinate so that they can get a new type of fig from the seed. Check out Ross Raddi for deep fig knowledge, there's also a group called Texas fig growers I believe... They're known for having a couple thousand different varieties, and traveling around and stopping to take a cutting when they find one growing wild.
So how are you pollinating?
What pollinates these peach flowers?
@@WaldemarSzmuro paint brushes and happy 🐝 bees that live next door at a certified honey farm. Thanks for watching.
How often are you allowed to open the pipes?
@@Marygholland we get the pipes opened once a week from June to October. After that this is a total off grid property with no services.
Hey Chad, came across your channel from Stefano Creatini. Love what you're doing. I'm up in Zone 4a/3b and would love to get some insight into whether you think a bale/wood chip greenhouse is viable here.
@@bradhafichuk my warmest greenhouse I have is surrounded by 4x4 bales of straw and inside grow beds made out of tons of bags of hot grass clippings (donated ) with soil on top. Keeps it toasty warm. Whatever you decide will help you and allow growing things you never deemed possible. Would start with figs, pomegranates and hardy citrus like kumquats.
