    Congratulations!!! What an achievement! Honestly, when I left you at Warner Springs when Sandra picked you up...I wondered about your progress and then I started checking in on these video posts while we were in Europe and camping in CA. Actually, you've been hiking the PCT longer than we were gone. We left May 26 and just got back Oct. 3--we were sightseeing while you were hiking 20+ miles every day!!! Incredible! I have a question...in many of your posts you seemed to be hiking and camping completely alone. I have only hiked at the beginning of the PCT and wonder when the crowds start to thin out. Maybe I would get used to camping and hiking alone but having someone to talk to really makes the miles go by and made me feel more comfortable knowing someone is within shouting distance. Approximately how many days/nights were completely solo compared to having someone with you or not very far away?

    • @NightOwl2024PCT
      @NightOwl2024PCT 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      At a high level I hiked solo for the first 31 days then formed a group (trail family from days 21 to 99) at which point I split off and hiked solo again from days 100-152. If you want to hike with a group or trail family, it is very easy to form or join a group especially during the desert or,, the sierras. If you prefer hiking solo like I did there are generally a good number of people on the trail and doesn't really start thinning out until Oregon. I would generally only go 1-4 hours per day without seeing another person while hiking, even up north. The longest stretch I went without seeing another person was 36 hours and that was getting on a trail section that just opened up after a fire closure. Even with that section there were a group of 5 that got a ride from town to the trailhead, the others camped near the trail head, and I chose to go ahead by myself and managed to stay ahead of everyone. I could have just as easily chosen to hike with the group or slowed it up to keep them nearby. As for camping I didn't mind camping with a couple of other people around but really enjoyed the solitude when I could find a spot all to myself. That said I only managed to camp alone maybe 40% of the nights when I was hiking solo but I could have found another sight around others if I wanted to for most nights. I liked mixing it up and hiking with a trail family for part of the time and hiking solo for part of the time. Bottom line is you can hike whatever type of hike you want.

    This has been so fun and nice to go along with you on this adventure!!! I grew up in the Tahoe area and got to hike the PCT quite a lot, but never had the opportunity to run the entire thing. Always wanted to, but just never was able to put it all together (life got in the way for me). So it's been nice to ride along with you and see areas I've been on the trail (40+ years ago)! Fantastic hike and well done!!!

    I’ve followed your whole journey. I’m so happy for you! I hope to do some significant section hiking in the near future but no thru hiking for me-I’m just not tough enough to endure crappy weather. But I’ve enjoyed your perspective and will miss your videos.

      Thanks and good luck with your future section hikes but don't underestimate yourself. I truly believe most hikers in reasonable physical condition are tough enough to hike the entire trail. While not perfect every day the PCT generally has phenomenal weather - the key is to "Embrace the Suck"!

    Those are ant lion insect sand traps. They dig those smooth holes and wait buried at the bottom for ants to fall in. The ants can't climb the smooth sides of the sand trap. Also the sand lion will spit or fling sand at the ants to knock them down into the ant lions' waiting Jaws. They are pretty fascinating to watch them get ants...Perhaps if one was under your tent he may have been flinging sand and hitting your bottom tyvek. At least that's what they look like to me anyway.

    • @NightOwl2024PCT
      @NightOwl2024PCT 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Fascinating. The insect was buzzing under my Tyvek ground cloth for almost an hour before I got him. I also couldn't believe the number of holes the next morning - there were probably 50 to 100 under and around my tent!

    REALLY enjoying your channel! I grew up in the Tahoe area and the PCT was a favorite hike of mine in the summers! Spent a LOT of time in the Lakes Basin Area. Always wanted to try to do the entire trail after reading Eric Ryback's book on his trek back in the 70's. Keep up the gr8 work and good luck with the knee!!!

    • @NightOwl2024PCT
      @NightOwl2024PCT 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks - I dinged up my knee a couple of times, but it always bounced back. I was continually amazed at how resilient the human body is and how many minor injuries and discomfort you can just hike through. On a long distance thru-hike like this your body becomes incredibly strong and recovers very quickly! Many other thru-hikers have echoed the same observation.

      Mosquitos were bad but I preferred covering up instead of using repellant. I was in the minority but with the sun hoodie and wearing pants I didn't use a single drop of sunscreen or insect repellant the entire hike! Never got sun burn and only a few bites through my clothes but not bad. "Embrace the suck"!

    • @NightOwl2024PCT
      @NightOwl2024PCT 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You frequently loose the trail crossing snow fields. Most of the time you pick up on the other side but it sometimes is easy to mistake small footpaths for the trail and you always have a natural tendency to head downhill. Or maybe we are just a bunch of old guys that aren't very good at following the trail ;)

    I’m still following your journey every day! Today is August 4 when you uploaded this video but I’m curious what the actual date is on your current hike. I’m wondering how you’re doing with all of the fires in Oregon.

    • @NightOwl2024PCT
      @NightOwl2024PCT 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Don't recall the exact date but I started the hike on April 15 so you could do the math. There was typically a 2-4 week delay between me hiking getting the content back home to my wife who would then edit and publish the videos. I have no idea on how other hikers found the time to edit and publish videos themselves on the trail but even they are typically a week or two behind since you can't load content until you are in town with decent wi-fi. Fires were bad in OR and WA. Was able to stay ahead of a couple but had to route around a total of 4 trail closures and deal with a lot of smoke. Fires now are just a part of thru-hiking the PCT - just like hiking across the snow or dealing with river crossings.

    • @NightOwl2024PCT
      @NightOwl2024PCT 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I'm pretty frugal myself and only went through 4 pair of shoes the entire trip (most hikers went though 5-6). Trouble with ordering on line (which is cheaper) is that you have to allow for shipping time and plan ahead for when you will be in town for resupply. I wasn't confident my first pair would last to Kennedy Meadows (700 miles) so I replaced them in Tehachapi. Shoes are one of the most critical pieces of gear and I never carried a pair of water shoes or any type of backup.
