Ppl complaining like AO isnt an open world adventure game where a multitude of threats constantly hang over your head, no matter if its PVP or PVE. This is just one of them, its on you how you handle it. A PVE equivalent to this would be if a giant white eyes spawned underneath the guy's ship, its the same exact result. It happens to all of us, its a learning experience. A taste of a "worst case scenario" when playing, stuff like this is exactly what makes the game an "odyssey"

Farming pumpkins on harvest is the slowest method of getting them. First go to harvest then to forest of cernunno then to shell island then to blackreach island. They all have pumpkin/wheat farms after the halloween upd.
