Some people seem to have a fetish with manufacturing. It is quite amusing to see them harking back the good olden days.

Japanese cars passed the MOT test while I got sick of British cars failing. Ford Cortina was better but Toyota and Datsun had bucket seats, aircon etc

Better cars were made abroad i think in all honesty there.

In all honesty, it's easy to point the finger at Thatcher, and she does have a lot to answer for with her methods, but the truth is, she was trying to save the taxpayer money after years of shoddy quality products from companies like British Leyland and so many others that had too much bureaucracy interfering with their systems. It was the same with British Railways too.

Sadly all gone.... I think part of the problem was the bean counters ran the company and everything was done as cheaply as possible to make a profit on each sale... People always criticize Lucas Electrics. Lucas are a good quality company who supply some space programs... Leyland and Brit Motorcycle management wanted all the looms cheaper so quality was cut.... Volvo cars had decent electrical systems, also supplied by Lucas...

The worker union, the inevicenty, the Design, the quality. Look nothing realy nothing which is crafted by British is competitive by any means!

this, roughly, explains what happened, but not a words about how or why. where did this BL come from? how did they manage to buy every car manufacturer?

Bad management and constant strikes, not just BL, but Ford and Vauxhall too, which is why they eventually moved all production to Germany. BL lost a lot of their foreign market and there was no way they could survive with just a home market. Also making modern cars, like the princess which was not a bad car tbh, but they were still being fitted with 4 speed gearboxes. One thing to remember are the amount of makers now who have copied the Mini's transverse engine location.

Definitely the British automotive industry is probably one of the worst in the world whilst there are a few independent manufactures that are British owned most of the Big ones (E.G Mini or MG) are owned Under foreign ownership It’s simply because of British Leyland and the horrible government can be said for any industry even railways for example the exact same thing as happened With many industries in the UK and so are lots of car factories in the UK nowhere near as much If any “British” Car manufacturers exist anymore

We dont make anything. Because the company's first responsibility is to make the shareholder money, so it has to go overseas for cheaper inputs.

American prefer american cars, Italian prefer italian cars, German prefer german cars, French prefer french cars; Swedish prefer buy swedish cars, Spanish prefer spanish cars, Japenese prefer Japenese cars. British prefer not buy british cars.

I drove a british car for ten years, because i was, and i still am a great fan of the people in the uk. That car costed me nerves until i finally had to sell it, because i had to commute 400 km the last years of my career. Since i drive my x1 BMW, i never had to look for new oil spots under my car. Sorry, brits, i love you, but concentrate on things, you are good in, like stand up comedy!😂🇩🇪🇬🇧🇩🇪🇬🇧🇩🇪🇬🇧❤

As a teen in the UK I always craved a TVR finally owned a S2 in Toronto back in the mid 90 ‘s , First time I took it for a serious drive in the country managed to achieve a 360 spin which was a major lesson in driving . Was constantly being yelled at while driving around Toronto “ what are you driving “ loved the car easy to maintain biggest issue was having to be so careful when parking as the front end was always subject to possible “ taps” on the concrete parking spacers . Never drove it October to March so I doubt if I put on 5,000 k in the 5 year ownership which was kinda silly but fulfilled a childhood dream .

When i was young in the 70s there were many British vehicles in Kenya Leyland, Albion, Bedford, Triumph, Morris even Ford was from UK. 80s ERF was a very good Bus.

Leonard Lord brought the car industry together, Tony Benn nationalised the car industry, Derek Robinson made the workers go on strike and Michael Edwardes helped Maggie Thatcher sell the car industry off.

I remember back in 1967, I was into club rallying with a SAAB 96. My friend whose parents owned the local garage had just bought and prepared a Mini Cooper S. On his first rally, the three spot welds on the bracket that secured the front suspension stabiliser arm let go leading to the collapse of the n/s front suspension and c/v drive shaft. A nut and bolt through the jigging hole would have resolved the problem, but a 2p bolt was just too much for British Leyland. Without quality control, all you do is is produce junk. So hardly shedding tears that the British motor industry went the way of the dodo. Not that SAAB was exactly defect free, but at least they went broke. OK, so rally driving a standard production car was hardly conductive to reliability, but I never bought another new car. Jack, the Japan Alps Brit

yes Britain had even lovely aircraft, but in the 1970s UK joined today's EU and then politicians decided to take out English companies and produce it elsewhere, thank you EU for effing up England and other countries, effing 2nd class dumb politicians. a German politician took out a very well known car factory in the early days Wartburg, 3 years after the owner died and left him with nothing.

The management didnt or couldnt manage. They blamed the workforce for everything and that just wasnt true. Then they privatised everything that the public owned. What a mess.

H15 VBS which is shown in the film, was featured at Motorfair 1991. Driven by Michelle Newman of Top Gear. H15 VBS was also featured in various publicity shots, also featured in the September 1991 edition of Autocar and Motor, Performance Car, Fast Lane magazines. December 1991 TVR Engineering decided to sell the car. The registration number was changed to H197DFR. In 2000 I bought the car. I still have the car which has been restored. Some history of a V8s. A history file as long as my arm!!

I had an S3C for 4-5 years. Fabulous fun, reliable and I enjoyed tinkering with it. I still have Steve Heath’s book which is brilliant. Always sounded fabulous but its problem was that it was not directionally stable. To keep it straight required constant small corrections and I felt it could bite in the wet. The E34 525i I got afterwards was probably a faster car point to point as it was so stable and accessible with good grip levels and predictable handling.

There is one reason why the British motoring industry is the cars were absolute crap and they sre still crap and of course the Japanese cars and the Japanese companies are still building cars and one if them is the best and largest motor manufacturers in the world famous for there reliability and build quality is the best and that is Toyota
