Blue Devils 2023 FLUGELHORN / LEAD TRUMPET SOLOIST Headcam - Alex Gifford
From the perspective of Lead Trumpet and Flugelhorn soloist Alex Gifford, a member of the 2023 Drum Corps International World Champion Blue Devils. Based out of Concord, CA, the Blue Devils claimed their 21st championship title with their competitive show, "The Cut-Outs", a celebration of the artist Henri Matisse's later years. The corps posted its third consecutive championship and ninth undefeated season, winning caption awards for best color guard, visual performance, and general effect.
This footage is from our "victory" encore run on Saturday night after our finals performance and score announcements. I never would have imagined that I would have been able to even make the Blue Devils, let alone win two world championships during my tenure as a performer. This would not have been possible without the support of my teachers, family, and friends.

Blue Devils 2022 TRUMPET/FLUGELHORN SOLOIST Headcam - Alex Gifford
มุมมอง 150K2 ปีที่แล้ว
From the perspective of Trumpet/Flugelhorn soloist Alex Gifford, a member of the 2022 Drum Corps International World Champion, the Concord Blue Devils. This year the Blue Devils celebrated their 65th anniversary with their championship-winning production, "Tempus Blue". The corps went undefeated the entire season, finishing with a score of 98.750 and winning caption awards for best brass, best ...
what mouthpiece are you using?
Yall sure acknowledge the tribal chief
Yes, this short was a great joke, very on the nose. But a genuine question. Was the stab with the right foot on 8 intentional? I was always taught to roll through.
How long are you still in the bd
Not me tapping my foot I’m a beginner
average trumpet player practice session LMAO, i can confirm he is a real trumpet, not trumpet player but he is the trumpet himself
bro drifted three miles to the right
how does this man walk so menacingly
Close enough. Welcome to the blue devils
😂😂😂 What it seems like being a fan of basically any other corps.
Alex Gifford, you ARE a Blue Devil
I saw this live and god this is like a core memory for me. We had seats on the side 1 end zone during the show but for this we got seats right on the 50 yard line and that first big hit was absolutely insane to hear lol. I know I’m like a year late but amazing show lol.
This popped back up in my feed and for that, I thank you. Lol 😍😍
Stop! I can hear your feet. Reset.
who are the people stage right just standing there in uniform?
It’s a joke. Right? …….right???
Is this the 5th floor classroom of the School of music to a university I won’t name? (I don’t want to dox you)
Nah, you need to go higher
More dancing and band instruments please
Hahahahh. Auction complete with props in the room to march around. 😂😂. Can’t wait til july to see BD at the Atlanta show.
What a G. Pun intended
The backpack is insane
Still one of my favorite blue devils shows
Here we go. Another trumpet player being arrogant as always. Sincerely, a drummer 😂
I hope to be a blue devil Im 14 but my state is why it's gonna be tough
Trumpet 1❤
what do you think i should work on if i plan on auditioning for phantom or bd? (im trumpet btw)
Is that rise of the resistance in the first part???
PSA: This video is a joke. I never planned to march in 2024, as I was content with my tenure at BD. Hope you found this video funny!
Are you going to marching in another corps in 2024?
Read his comment again bro@@BryanMatthewDeaver-Ryan
he might've aged out
I don’t know if I’m slow, or I don’t get it, but did you not make blue devils for next year?
No worries man - I never planned on doing BD again in 2024 so I did not reaudition
This looks so surreal I wish to do this some day but I don’t play brass I play saxophone so sadly I couldn’t unless I learned a brass instrument I am currently learning trumpet at the moment though
💪
That was enjoyable beyond belief. Great job to the entire corps, arrangers, directors, choreographers and anyone else involved with this fantastic group. The flugelhorn/trombone duo was excellent and I could tell they both played with feeling from the heart. Can't wait to listen to the next Blue Devils video.
yep, i love looking at the ground
Of all the headcams I’ve seen, this is perhaps the one that I relate to the most. My high school played Both Sides Now in 2022, and I had a mello solo in it that was not unlike this one. Also, one of our techs, Anna Gullet, was in this show. Also, for my solo in 2023, I stole the little horns down thing that you did where you held it to your chest (not sorry). Great job!!!
Uuuuuhhmmm... *confused Norwegian* But as a trumpeter, Im REALLY impressed!
I think you'll make it
Nope, you didn't play high enough. Sorry bud, the Blue Devils aint calling you back lol.
That's it! You're in!
I love the silly little jazz licks the flugel always does in the ballad hits, literally the best part of these cams lol
Best part of the show for me too! It was so much fun getting to improv beneath the amazing sounds of the rest of the brass
@alexjgifford Was it fully improvised or was it written out in sheet music?
Why aren’t you marching this year?
I got bored of it and decided to do an internship instead
Maybe one day a blue devil can be you
Congrats on a great season homies
This guy is so majestic in the ballad ❤❤
The camera zoom glow up from 2022 to 2023 is INSANE lol
I had no idea what I was doing in 2022 😭
nice, balls kid
If you are auditioning for Blue Devils, you could have just stood in place. 😂
What are you yapping about
He had to prove he’s just simply better
oh that’s not-
can’t wait to see you in January 🤙🏼
Hi, Alex! Do you know the minimum age to try out for DCI blue devils? I am a freshman Tuba player for my school, and I want to try out. I already know how to play the Contra Tubas(My band director is against using sousaphones), and I am a fast learner which should help me learn the drills

If you're serious, I'd say BD is a big stretch but you could definitely try for other corps next year. In the Cascades in the lower world class range we've had people as young as 15. Even if you're doing the corps to get your foot in the door for another corps, lower level corps are a great experience and you're still doing drum corps.
