FFXI Tips for not-so-new-players-anymore

Welcome to the description. This is my love letter to FFXI where I go over some tips I learnt on my journey through the first part of the nation missions. Also sappy inspirational stuff at the end. I really like this game man... One thing that's frustrating is needing a gold hairpin for AF quest on what seems to be a dying sever. Quetzalcoatl.. Auction house is almost Always empty. Ugh.
I’ve always wanted to give this game a try. only problem is that I’m stuck to console.
As someone whose played since 2003 your video brought me tears a few times ❤ thanks for enjoying vana'diel with us 🙏 subbed 🎉
For people who want to experience a classic XI experience check out the private server horizon XI. Consistently over 2k players online and is the true way to experience ffxi like it was originally intended. Retail is great for people who want more modern mechanics that respect your time similar to 14 .
Unfortunately, if you didn't play this game between 2003-2009, you missed out. Nothing comes close to comparing to this game during it's peak... The content made this game great, but the community made it phenomenal. None of those private servers even come close to recreating that experience.
That is what I keep hearing, yes. It's really lovely to hear those stories from people who did play during those times. But my point is that even without the same community aspects, FFXI is a wonderful game to experience. I've really enjoyed playing it without any nostalgia or memories of it, simply because of what it is like today. I can't have missed out on that, because it didn't exist in 2003-2009.
Based
Been getting recommended so many FFXI vids lately, and it just makes me think back to all the wonderful memories I have of playing it in the early 2000s
It’s so wild to find out people are still playing this game!! I spent my many nights of adolescence up all night on my now obsolete desktop with a CRT monitor having the time of my life! I remember hustling as a White Mage and making bank teleporting people around! 😂 Thanks for the nostalgia
Too sad to play.
Many FFXIV players talk about the boss just to download the game. In FFXI, the boss to create an account is worse then XIV. I could not beat this boss mainly because I feel if SE wants us to try this game, they would not make it so difficult.
Still the best mmo to have been made I miss it!
Id also like to suggest, especially for returners, HorizonXI.
Ah man just hearing that music alone puts me right back into the game. =w= So good. Too bad the game is so damn hard to get into. In every way possible. Even logging in.... LOL
Game died for me in 2010 when they ruined exp battles and then in the same breath invalidated all the endgame gear. I could live with the second, but not the first. I was very close to getting all the jobs to level 75 the legitimate way through EXP battle. And then they release abyssea? Which isn't even fun? Fuck that. In fact EXP battles were the best when you actually had to perform the functions of your job before they jumped SATA and stuff like that.
Ive dabbled in it got to around lvl 30 on MNK. Always felt overwhelming but i do want to give it an honest go again i love the world. FFXIV just aint doing it for me anymore and FFXI definitely feels like a world thats alive.
why are both of the MMOs two of your first three final fantasies. do you just play a lot of MMOs that seems like the most logical reason
Funnily enough, FFXIV was my first MMO and FFXI was my second. I went a bit into this on livestream with Greg Troyan (funny dude, would recommend), but I think it boils down to 1. Not being a FF fan growing up (back in the day I felt like you could only play Tales or FF, and I just happened to choose Tales) 2. Wanting more social interaction during the pandemic. Definitely an unique perspective, but I look forward to playing more of the series this year!
Prishe is best!😊 I loved this game for 7 long years... I stopped playing because I didn't have Internet anymore and it was like losing all my friends. I've periodically kept up on changes to the game since then... They were slowly adding quality of life changes to make things more bearable but ultimately alot of players made the game difficult for others. The game has 2 glaring flaws that have never been improved upon and that saddens me. There was a ton of player inequality. Some jobs did things better than others and was a "right way" to build your character. If you didn't do them you weren't wanted and you needed others to make progress. The other huge problem was that it takes sometimes 30-40 people to beat a single boss monster! That part is fine... But that boss would drop 1-3 items and everyone was after just 1 of those... But the remaining 37 people helping you kill it got nothing. Not even experience and money. And to even fight this boss(talking about kirin) you need to kill 4 other similar but smaller bosses and to fight them you need to spend hours each to collect items from normal monsters to spawn them. I can't tell you how many hundreds of times Ive fought these bosses but I never in all those years got the thing I was after. On the good side, I loved how mining and logging and gathering worked and it was still the most fun I've had doing those things! The crafting was good but there was often a main ingredient to make various things that is extremely difficult to get and insanely expensive to buy... If you make one of those recipes and fail... It broke you. It would take years to recover from the loss... I liked the huge variety of jobs and combining things to make interesting combos. I loved the huge variety of abilities though there were 10x as many spells for mages as there were abilities for non mages... But mages also had to buy those spells... This game was a fun amount of complicated. There were countless awesome sights to see and people to meet and fun things to do! Making your own dungeon, then running it to get neat toys and more pieces to make more dungeons with was a riot!
I'm playing again as well since a few weeks because I wanted to see the main story again :). Currently windurst 10, zilart and CoP completed. Of to Aht Urghan! ^^ I love to see the story again after all those years :)
Best game. Best mmo
what's astounding about FFXI is how we all have equal amounts of epic experiences in the game as well as stories about giant wastes of time. Yet, they all end up being memorable and enjoyable. Like the time I kept riding the ship to Selbina from Mhaura over and over looking for the ship to Aht Urgan...
I recently picked the game up again while dealing with a knee injury and having to take things a bit easier (i used to play up till about 2009) and was pleasantly surprised at how accessible it had become, not only with trusts but also the RoE to help with leveling and gear, its like seeing an old friend with a new haircut. It still (IMO) gives the amazing sense of exploration, wonder and mystery that FF14 lacked (again IMO) - glad to be back on and leveling.
I've been playing on CatsEyeXI private server, LOVING it! ALSO you sound like a real life Mithra! God Bless you ALL!
I bought the game and a character slot and cannot figure out how to login... can't get past the playonline login screen lol..
SE MMO experience
Did you figure it out yet? I remember getting confused my first time, too. I can't believe they didn't remove that yet... LOL
Im so happy I discovered this video ever since I came back to ffxi because of the free login campaign, I've kinda been torn with returning or not.. but now I realize I should just come back and enjoy my pace while teaming up with people and finishing up my final expansion wotg. Keep it up the great work with the videos
I'm a long time FFXIV player who just recently began their journey into XI (yes it was cause of the Jeuno raids) with the Horizon Private Server. I wanted to essentially see why people liked the game at the start and understand the appeal and from the moment I got in, I fell in love hard. I'm in love with the social aspects, the need for proper cooperation, the fact that the jobs do play and feel very different from one another. It was something I loved about FFXIV: ARR up until Dawntrail where I just felt the game is starting to rest on it's own laurels. Content is starting to look and feel the same, job design feels homogenous. I believe it's why I adore the Horizon server so particularly, although I'm starting to feel the effects of having a game be so time-consuming as a full-time adult. Really considering making the jump to retail, just hoping with new content and the creature comforts, I'll still like the game haha.
I would love it if this game was ported to modern consoles and if they unified the subscription with FF14's (like how you only need one sub to play classic WoW and retail).
very nice vids. It's a bit overdue, but as fellow Bahamut: welcome to the world of Vana'diel. Personally agreed with majority of points explained. Personally has been abusing these lovely return home campaigns which starts around mid of Adoulin expansion progressed, and so far enough for me to enjoy & finished all story content this game has to offer all the way to current story expansion: Voracious Resurgence. Actually watched your other vid for beginner tips, & personally just want to add this few: cap your weekly RoE sparks & unity accolades. If read from wiki guides, these 2 things are one of easiest access to easy gil making, & if planning to gear up, gil will become very important compared to FF14, where one can easily burn millions of gils just for grinding a piece of gears/weapons. They will reset weekly on sunday's JP midnight, & 4 hours before that is the gain xp RoE bonus which many usually tries to cap them, mainly due to gain xp being the best time to quickly cap them. Escha Zitah usually packed with ppl for this, though there's other alternative places for it. There's ofc other limited time one can check on RoE wiki page to try adjust as closely with own schedules. Domain Invasions/DI also one of dailies one should also try to do as well, quite easy especially if tried to join right after daily JP midnight resets. If your unity NPC chats doesn't get packed often, they usually announce the ongoing DIs, or can peruse website whereisdi.com . DI points became quite important since it opens access for easy early end-game gearings. It has daily 100 points capped, hence usually just 1x joining daily DI usually more than enough, though do watch out amount of daily point u get after (viewable on ingame Status - Currency 2 menu). Ambuscade would be the next thing to focus when gotten level 99. VE usually soloable, even though being in parties doing this even more bonuses, since gallantry currencies only awarded from party entries. At least solo with trusts still can earn hallmark currencies. Like DI, they also offer early end-game gearings, with one very notable a-must pick is Naegling sword which would be great for many jobs that has access to sword skills. Other than that, enjoy! ;)
as someone who played the game since the beginning and for 15 years. i wonder if i'll have access to my old character. after doing end game content 3 mythics 2 relics 1 aeonic, i don't know how i'll feel about having to start from zero. i invested so much into my main bard. this game will forever have a special place in my heart. even as i quit i was still had friends and was having fun. i wonder if the community is now chill as you claim. part of the reason i left was because of the toxic people and rmts. i would definitely give it another try just to see what ffxi is like after an 7 year absence.
As much as I'm heavily interested with the world, the treacherous fields and the cool classes, I just don't want to get close to FFXI due to 1 thing: the absolute importance of gear swapping to minmax certain skills. Having things like that instantly crosses the game out from my list.
Take this as you will, but I felt the same as you. Comming from 14 to 11 I hated the idea of gearswaps. But the feeling of conquering this unforgiving world felt so good I stayed. Then It happend, the rush of having the bis set for one of my actions, it felt so good and now I can't stop, it's so much fun getting gear in this game. If the other aspects speak to you, I urge you to reconsider. You mighe find yourself one day loving it all.
I still prefer 75 cap on private servers, they are not as jank as they used to be and much more fun playing in a group instead of having a bunch of trusts play the game for you.
Reason one to not: the official Launcher.
No thanks, I already have a job and they pay me
Great video!!!! The Hawks of the Azure Sky are watching! Skreee!
Everyone should return to XI. Im having a blast coming back to this game.
For me the best way to play FFXI now is the Horizon private server.
great vid!
You have a great voice for TH-cam and this vid was very well made!
Thank you ✨️
I do wish this could be combined with ff14 or get a discount so it was easier to justify two subs
No, it’s not. This game has extremely mid plot which has been advertised by some as “maybe the best story of FF series” and it’s terribly delivered. This game has been released two years before WoW (iirc) and technical aspects feel like it’s a PS1 era junk. Not to mention the launcher which is a joke. You also have to pay separately for each character made and all extra Wardrobe slots after Wardrobe 2. Menu navigation feels like it’s 2000s again and you finally have 5 lines screen instead of 3. It’s exhausting at best. I’m about to finish this “adventure” and will never look back. Remember that these videos come from survivor bias situation and only people that talk about it in 2024 are those who like it despite the utter mess this game is.
Thanks for your comment. I disagree with some points and agree with others. Mainly the billing, I agree that billing per character and the limit on 2 complimentary wardrobes should be changed. This game isn't for you and that's okay. I don't understand how survivorship bias has anything to do with this though.
Re: community. 'Community' is very subjective, because a community is made up of different, varied people. Some are more giving with their time and tips, others will not spare you a second glance and some are in-between these two extremes. As it is, I can only speak from my own, limited perspective. My experience is that of kindness, patience and welcoming towards new players in the past 6 months. In regard to finding these lovely mentors, I suggest 1. Looking for a new-player friendly linkshell on your server (check for pearls at the linkshell congierge, ask around in the FFXI subreddit or on Bsky) 2. Asking questions on social media 3. Being a nice, normal person (impossible challenge, I know) "Why do I have to go outside of the game to find people to help me?" It's kind of how all online games work these days, I'm afraid. My point is those people exist; cast your net wide, be respectful and look for them. Many more people than just me love this game and want to see it not just continue to exist, but to thrive. For that, the game needs new players that'll stick around and have fun, and they're happy to help get you to a point where you feel like you know what you're doing. Put yourself out there. Reach out. Vana'diel awaits.
I played this game couple years back and was instantly in love with it. Untill I got to the level 99 content. I would wait in jeuno for people's shouts for group but they all wanted "experienced" member for whatever they were about to do. I of course wanted to do it for the first time so I had no experience in anything therefore no one invited me in their group. I was so frustrated thinking how do they expect a new player to be experienced in something if no one would invite him into the group. I unfortunately had to call it quits in sadness. I felt like I was stuck in this weird limbo.
You're not alone, that's XI's endgame since 2006. If you're a DPS, having relic/empy/mythic/etc is pretty much mandatory and only specific jobs. So if you were MNK, THF, NIN, BLU you're not getting in. Maybe an average geared BRD, COR, or WHM yeah you have a shot though the elitism at endgame is also what turned me off in '14. XIV's got some elitism, but it's no where near as bad as XI's.
Very nice video I hope people that play FF14 see this and decide to give the game a try.
speaking on the community, the issue you mentioned regarding it's size feels like it has the opposite effect on me. rarely ever do i find anyone who even bothers to chat, even in their discords. Often I am stuck to also figure things out myself or spend hours on google searching for the answer and unfortunately the hours on google happens to be more efficient.
I appreciate the effort that went into the video. I will not do that
If it had a larger player base that wasn't split between retail and two private servers I'd say yes it's an amazing game. However it's nothing compared to what it used to be now.
Just wish the game was an offline single-player game, by this point. If the game is now designed to use Trusts all the way through, then they might as well make it to where you can access it offline and play without their servers.
It's technically not designed for trusts all the way through. There is undoubtedly content that cannot be handled with a group of six, especially five being trusts.
@@Seidragon The fact that you used the word "Technically" is enough for me. They should quit playin' around and either release a classic server or release an offline mode.
This is how I feel about the mobile game Of Brave Exvius War of the visions...
The Jeuno raids in FFXIV got a coworker of mine invested in XI. He asked me to play it with him since I had played it for about 10 years prior. Going through on a new character, I think it is so much more interesting how random quest tie into each other. We did warrior artifact gear where my coworker first learned of the Talekeepers and Raogrimm. Then we did Dark Knight Artifact where we got more details about Raogrimm and some of the events. Then we tackled the Magicite quest line, where he started to really see who Raogrimm was. It's great how no matter what you do in the game, it all ties together.
Oof the music brings back memories. I was addicted to FFXI for a few years. A lot of good times but also dark times for me personally. Thx for the video.
Same. Sleeping in between HNM spawn windows. Doing king behemoth till 4am and having work at 8. Good times
The best advice I can give for new players is to look up a tutorial on how to set up a controller. The game handles so much better on controller than mouse and keyboard
I helped someone with the final mission of the voracious resurgence and then immediately proceeded to fuck off, giving me all their gil once they finished the last cutscenes. Honestly, respect the decision as they experienced the full story and was content with not wasting time with the optional, excessive grind available.
Incredibly based.
