I always tell people to start with the original, but IV, Rondo, Symphony, and Aria are all great starting options imo.

Started with Aria of Sorrow and been in love with the series ever since, moreso on the Metroidvania side but these games are great fun!

The Adventure Rebirth is on emulation. The game is a God damn masterpiece.

Castlevania 1 first

Lords of Shadow series is great. All the og vania games I played are good. Early games are hard.

It is just Super Castlevania. That 4 can sod off. It was numbered only to sell more copies in the West. Imagine if Resident Evil Remake was called RE4. No. Fuck that, with Nocturne. The worst show I've seen.

25 years later I finally finished Simon’s Quest. At 10 I thought I was too dumb to figure it out. I wasn’t. I think it was designed to force kids to call the Nintendo help line.

Good video, very useful for newcomers to the series. Just a small nuance concerning Rondo of Blood and Dracula X: In terms of pure base graphical power, the SNES is a more powerful console than the base PC Engine. You can see it in the first level of Dracula X compared to Rondo of Blood; with the complex fire animations and the heatwaves that make the buildings look all wavy in the background. There's also lots of transparency effects and sprite scaling, zooming and rotations, which is the SNES is excellent at with its different "modes" (like mode 7, which was displayed a lot in SC4). However, the PC-Engine had a CD extension, which allowed an infinitely bigger amount of data storage than the puny cartridges of the SNES. Which means more space for more sprites, more animations, more (sub)levels, more cut scenes that are more elaborate and CD-quality music and voice acting. Also, the SNES can technically do bigger sprites and has a far vaster color palette, but the base PC Engine can technically show more colors simultaneously on screen. Great qualities Rondo of Blood used very well, making it in many ways better than Dracula X. So yeah, now that I'm finished nerding out, let me reiterate that you made a nice summary of the Castlevania franchise and how to play these games in the most accessible way/recent hardwares for people discovering this universe with the Netflix show or Smash Bros. I hope it'll be helpful to lots of people👍

Great Video. Personally I would start with classic Castlevania before going Metroidvania. Specifically I think Symphony of the Night gets eben better if you played Castlevania 3 and Rondo of Blood first. Also the PSP Remake of Rondo of Blood is quite awesome.

This was incredibly well put together. Comprehensive and thoroughly entertaining. Would love to see a follow up where you cover the other games in the series (maybe the Lords of Shadow titles and some of the obscure, lesser known entries too). Just now getting into this series and I’m finding it so fascinating, so this video was well timed. :)

There's also Castlevania Rebirth which is a remake of Castlevania Adventure (the Gameboy game). It's unfortunately stuck on WiiWare though, which is a shame, because it's great.

I feel like I have to comment here, the one game he left out because of the price (Castlevania Chronicles) does have a $7 digital version on PS3 and it was also playable on the PSP and Vita back in the day. So it's cheap on the PS3 PSN but it definitely is not a good place to start as it is by far the hardest Castlevania

I'm here thanks to Epic Games giving away the Anniversary Collection. I plan on at least beating Castlevania 4 before diving into the later entries, thanks for the video!

I'm probably in the extreme minority, but the first Castlevania game I played was Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness on the N64. I still think it's an awesome game with high replayability due to unlockable outfits and characters (total of 4 playable characters). After this I discovered the other older games and have become a big fan. While it is sad to see what Netflix has done to Castlevania, at least the games are still wonderful with great gameplay and consistently awesome music.

Start with IV. It's accessable - the whip is overpowered and it has a decent difficulty curve, brilliant OST and atmosphere. If you can beat it, move on to Rondo then SOTN.

You didn't mention it in the video, but Symphony of the Night is also on Xbox through backwards compatibility. And it's based on the original PS1 version, so it has the original voice acting, which is always a plus. On that note, Xbox is surprisingly a very good platform for Castlevania games. You have the collections obviously, and through backwards compatibility, you also get Symphony, Harmony of Despair, and the Lords of Shadow trilogy. The only real loss is not having Rondo of Blood, but otherwise, if you're an Xbox owner, you have the best amount of Castlevania content.

Castlevania Lords of Shadow 2 is my favorite game in history today since its magnificent launch on consoles PS3, Xbox 360 and PCs, I love hacking slash with open world RPG exploration, Castlevania City and Dracula's Castle, Gabriel Belmont transformed into Dracula and Trevor Belmont as Alucard battling Both united against Satan'Lucifer and his Acolytes, as well as Zobek The Grim "Death" Reaper himself... And I don't care about the opinion of any fan critic who criticizes this masterpiece of gameplay, combat, and upgrades, the story of the trilogy concluded with a flourish, stealth sessions that I'm passionate about, a story that makes a lot of sense, yes, anyone who doesn't understand is totally imbecile crude, tacky, weird , media illiterate and stupid... It's a game Really perfect and I don't care if anyone's opinion goes against mine... Best three-dimensional game in history, not just the Castlevania saga...

This video made me realize that they still haven't re-released Kid Dracula from Game Boy.

Castlevania: Bloodlines actually had a re-release on the SEGA Genesis Mini before the Anniversary collection!

They all suck. Nocturne Moonlight or sotn is the only good one.

Y'know Rondo of Blood is the stronger game against Dracula X no contest but i've always prefered Dracula X's version of the stage 1 track over Rondo's. Can't really put my finger on why. Maybe its because it was my first touch with Richters games (i began on 1-3, SotN, 6t, and Bloodlines) or maybe its the crunchy sound i adore

This month, I have started playing x chronologically. It's been amazing so far.

Pretty good video, acts as a brief overview of a good amount of the Castlevania games, can see it being handy for people trying to get into the series but don't know where to start ^.^

Ooh! I've brought the anniversary collection for my Switch but have yet to play it. I've only played the characters on Super Smash but always wanted to know more.

I remember playing this on the PS3. Very nostalgic. Although it is a very sudden turn from the tone of Red Dead. 😆

I want to add onto this video that I don’t think the ‘formula’ is the only way to succeed with a family game - just the most obvious, and the most relevant to Sony right now! There are always exceptions, like Pokemon, that will do ridiculously good sales numbers for a variety of reasons!
