Funny to think that, at one time, these were two of the most powerful men in Hollywood.
I thought the film glamorized mafia violence, the reality of it is just disgusting. But I did like the liotta character as he couldnt stop himself being addicted to the gangster fantasy. I particularly like the wife's voice overs when she admitted the whole thing turned her on, even though it was wrong. I found that refreshing when the wife admits some form of responsibility.
Glamorized ? How many died ? How many went to prison ? The movie depicted the disgusting side.
I usually side with Ebert but this one is a split decision for me. It's an entertaining movie but Siskel is correct in that it's the same Scorsese characters in a different setting. Many would say that's not bad and maybe it isn't. But it's becoming boring, just different rounds of the same old fight. Mobsters - we get it. At least the Rocky franchise was honest enough just to use numbers after the title.
Ebert hit a HR here. Center field.
Casino was nominated for best actress at the AA and best director and best actress at the GG. Thumbs down? My eye.
Sorry this was not a love story at all,yes Sam was a simp but you minimize the real deal in the development of Vegas & the gangsters surrounding this story.Sorry Gene you’re clueless
Brilliant. The world will never see two movie critics of such caliber duking it out like this again. RIP, gentlemen. You will forever have the balcony.
I remember this live. And I had already seen the film. I had so many agreements and disagreements but by far so many agreements. They missed out on a few things I thought but just incredible. What an unbelievable movie.
Yeah Siskel was dead wrong here. Lol
I miss these guys. Always looked forward to their reviews. Thought Casino was a good movie but Goodfellas was better.
The kind of movie that is so good, when you’re flipping thru channels and land anywhere in the middle of this movie, you just stop dive in right there. Top 3 all time movie for me
The movie is a fucking masterpiece!
Was never a fan of these critics, personally always found them too opinionated and would find any excuse to not enjoy a movie. But I still miss them.
These reviews they did make the reviews on rotten tomatoes and other forums of that ilk look like the biased unobjective garbage they are.
Watching this revue of this film brings back so many memories of years gone by. Fantastic post.
Casino better than Goodfellas
Agree with Siskel on the relationship between Deniro and Stone. Sharon always for was a stand out annoyance in this movie for me even though I do love it
Now I gotta turn my back on ya
get his ass roger
I did like Casino better, but I get the argument for Goodfellas.
Man makes me miss good film criticism
He called pesci character a pig, animal,.ok now apologize to the animal kingdom 😂
For most great films, you can tell in the first few minutes that it's going to be good. And this movie is a perfect example of that..
Easily, one of the most overrated movies of all time.
A must watch every time its on, no matter how many times you've seen it. Just like The Shawshank Redemption
Spike Lee=Hack.
Classic example of Siskel over-analyzing the movie. Casino is a classic and a top 100 movie all time.
i like gene but there are holes in deserts for people who talk sh-t about this movie
Joe Pesci is a punk who threatened to kill a woman bc she ripped up a picture of the Pope!
The distributor tried selling this as a love story?? Wow, it’s hardly that!
Great review by Siskel and Ebert on "Goodfellas!" The movie works on two fronts it's a great movie and a biography too about Henry Hill.
Siskel really had a cathartic reaction to the Joe Pesci character.
Half the dialoge would be missing if they got rid of the F bomb!
2025. They go it right.. 👍🏽👍🏽❤
Ebert was a total nerd who was wrong about so many movies
1990 was cinema’s greatest year
Siskel keeps saying "quasi-documentary." Doesn't even make sense.
So many classic scenes and dialogue it's hard to choose a favorite. Til this day me and a few buddies of mine will say the line : Now go home and get your f'n shine box.......
Back in the day I had become a big Scorsese fan, still am. That being said I went with a good friend to see Goodfellas on opening day , and I can recall after hearing just the first few words of dialog, we turned to each other grinning, and I said "oh man this is going to be good." It was great, and remains, IMO, Scorsese's all time best film, out of his many great films. Just bought a 4K Bluray of it, looking forward taking it all in again. RIP Paul Sorvino, Ray Liotta, Frank Vincent and Tony Sirico. What a cast of characters!
All movies now are shit I’m sorry
Siskel was on drugs as this point.
I don't remember the first time I saw Goodfellas even thought I have a very good memory when it comes to films (time, place, theater or home, who I was with, butter or no butter on the popcorn). Likely because I've watched it so many times and I never get tired of it. Interesting fact: Anthony Powers (Jimmy Two Times) was a very popular and successful pop music writer and video producer. True story. True story.
I dont remember joe pesci ever being a made man?
He wasn’t. He was murdered.
This was a better film than Dances with wolves. 34 years later I'm still pissed this didn't win best picture Oscar!
Fun trivia: Roger Ebert and Paul McCartney were born on the same exact day. June 18, 1942.
One of my fav movies
Siskel is right that it’s not fresh and it’s basically Goodfellas in Vegas - but it is def not a thumbs down. Great acting and fun to watch.
I liked it better than Goodfellas. I never get tired of watching it.
I wonder what would Roger and gene would think about the woke Hollywood movies of today ,had they still be alive in 2025
Oh shut the f%$% up, you obsessed f#$%ing jackass Every decision Hollywood makes is about money. They don't take risks anymore. They don't greenlight outside the box projects or lesser known directors any more because they only want what feels like a safe investment. Your conspiracy right wing stupidity is all garbage.
stop with the mhmm mhmm mhmm mhmm. let the dude speak.
