Mini concertina sketchbooks from 'Morocco' paper scraps
Trying to use up some of my stash of papers from an art holiday to Morocco earlier in the year. Papers were taken with me, acquired and made there and some made when I got home to complete my larger concertina.
These sketchbooks were made by collaging the scraps onto sheet music and those sheets cut into pieces, folded then glued together to make concertinas. The small one (approx. 7cm square) was made with the offcuts so nothing was wasted. The large one is approx. 11cm square. The covers are made with a brown paper bag I got there with some lovely argon oil purchases!
I've started adding watercolour to some of the pages and my plan is to work over them using my photos of Moroccan pots and tiles for inspiration.

Gel printing tips: Variation when printing patterns

This video demonstrates how I obtain variation when printing simple patterns using a gel printing plate. The main tip is that the plate is not cleaned between prints and I choose different colours for each pull. Working with fairly thin layers of paint means that some paint will dry on the plate, which may (or may not) be picked up with the next pull. You can also find me in the following place...

I love that you've captured so much detail yet kept it so simple and vibrant. No Valbusybusy here😅 I can smell the spice market and feel the warm breeze without ever having been there! I think I said it near the beginning because my plate already had bits of paint on it before I started... I learnt this 'term' from Denise Lush I think, that was yonks (ages) ago - new bit of slang for you 😄!

    As above, I too am pleased to find a new artist using a gelli plate. And I like your results. I've had mixed results... and wondered if you've found your paper will stick to the plate in the pulling, tearing, leaving bits stuck? Exasperating! Why does that happen?

      @lucymathersart ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry I missed your comment! Thank you. Yes, occasionally my paper will stick. I think it depends on a lot of things but for me it's often when I've left the paper to dry on the plate, then when I tried to pull the print I've not waited quite long enough and the paint is still a bit wet and I've used thin paper.

    What a great video, it has given me ideas to experiment with! I haven't done gelly printing yet, my question is: do you need the gelly plate or can you use perspex or glass instead?

    • @lucymathersart
      @lucymathersart 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, I think for image transfer you probably need to use a gel plate. You could try making your own, just search for gel plate recipes. You can use perspex or glass for printing but one problem with acrylic paint is that it dries quickly, especially when rolled thinly, so you have to work super fast. You might not get the detail as perspex and glass aren't flexible like the gel plate. Have fun and experiment with what you have though, as you never know until you try!

      Hey! Thanks for your comment! To be honest I was trying to not think too much about placement. Although I do remember deliberating about a couple of pieces. I wanted some to go across the page folds and some repeat patterns in different places. I am experimenting in this sketchbook. I think you can get accordion sketchbooks which are like our concertina ones, and similar to this. The octopus is specific to the seawhite of Brighton brand.

      Yes, I do use other tissue papers as well, but the wet strength tissue is excellent. if you are in the states you can use Deli paper as a replacement for tissue. From what I have seen that holds up well. Just experiment with what you have, if it's left on the plate even craft / gift tissue shouldn't rip. More likely to rip and stick if the paint is still wet.
