The Classics - In Yukatan (LP Yellow Sun of Ecuador)[1974]
The Classics is a Dutch band, founded in 1967 in Stramproy (Limburg) and originally a show orchestra. The Classics scored especially in the seventies hits. The biggest successes were "My lady of Spain" and "Yellow sun of Ecuador".
In 1966 Jan Dirkx decided together with his cousin Ber Kwaspen and Harrie Broens, supplemented by brother Ton Dirkx and René Munnecom. The first performance took place May 27, 1967. The members of the group started writing their own songs. At that time the band consisted of Jan and Ton Dirkx, Ber Kwaspen, Harrie Broens and Renee Munnecom. In 1971 Ton Dirkx was succeeded by Joep Beurskens (ex-Teddybears). In 1974 Rene Munnecom was succeeded by Peter Gerits.
In 1969, The Classics went into the studio again, this time recording "Try it Again", their own composition; this song was later renamed "My Lady of Spain". It would later turn out that this was the basis for their international success. Still, it took until 1972 before the album was released. Within months, more than 500,000 copies were sold. TV appearances at home and abroad followed. In the years that followed, hits like: "Yellow sun of Ecuador", "Papa Peppone", "My Russian lady", "In Yucatan", "Sunshine baby", "Wings of an eagle" and "Gimme that horse".
