Island Runabout
Sorry about the terrible audio; I'm stuck inside with no headset.
I recently managed to break both my calcaneus (heels) which left me stuck in bed for a while. I will endeavor not to break both lower limbs at the same time in the future.
After i ran out of software projects i wanted to work on, i decided to play with a procedural map generation algorithm i came up with a while back.
Here's a bit more about the algorithm: github.com/mrdunk/flowing-ter...
For this video i'm using an equilateral triangle grid, tiled to decrease resolution the further from the camera it gets.
It took about a month to get this far using the Godot V4 game engine. godotengine.org/
It gets close to 60FPS on my very modestly powered laptop which i think is a win.
I'm quite impressed with Godot. It's my first time using any sort of game engine and i've very little graphics programming experience.
It's my first time using C# but that was actually very easy for me since i've a fair bit of C++ experience.
I don't know if i'll do much more with it. More variety of tree types would be nice.
And Pirate ships.
But my feet are improving so i'm not sure if i'll work on it much more.
Anyway,
i hope someone out there enjoys this.
I certainly had fun writing it.

Repairing the faulty touch sensor on a VW head unit.

Thanks for taking the time to post this. Really easy to follow. I have a Discovery nav (2017 California Beach ) with an ALPS chip set next to the SD Card reader. To remove the screen from the PCB I had to remove both the vertical SD card readers as there’s a small pressure clip on each that needed to be pushed to release the touchscreen. One other build - reset the head unit after reinstalling (on mine it was just pressing the power button and holding for 10+ seconds until the unit restarts. The new digitiser didn’t work until I did this.

Mine head unit is a little different as the release tabs are on the inside and I had to remove that small daughter board as well. I had to run to Home Depot to get a Torx key set, I needed T6 & T8. I advise anyone doing this to make sure to have all smaller Torx sizes before beginning.

Super video. A little care and dexterity called for. Hardest bit was replacing plastic in car. £9.59 off ebay; skoda, vw etc are all the same. You pay more than double for the one labelled VW......obviously driving a VW means you're flush. Only worry is it is glued round the edge; how long will this cheap Chinese touch matrix last; compared to the shite OEM VW (chinese) matrix. I have visions of a great stack of touch screens...... Many thanks for great instructions.

Thank you so much from Australia.. I learned from your video that the problem could be fixed cheaply and I immediately followed link to order the part from Aliexpress. Local VW dealer quoted me AUS $3919 ( $3519 for parts and $400 service fee) to replace it for my 6 years old Caddy. Touch screen stopped working a year ago. The touch screen arrived today from China after 2 weeks. I also used another video from "neuromangler" for a lot more details in the repairing process. I ended up spending AUS $20 plus 2 hours of my time. It is now working like a new one. Huge thanks!!! Duncan!

This worked, I got the one in the link above delivererd to ireland for €14. I have same head unit as in the video. 2017 VW sharan. about 80% of my screen stopped working, mainly in middle, was left with about 20% on the right side still working. Follow these instructions to remove the unit. th-cam.com/video/9LMGOCuBSt8/w-d-xo.html They say to use a plastic spudgeon to pry open the dash without damaging the trim, but 2 table knifes braced with a piece of cloth worked for me. I wouldnt use screwdrivers unless one slipped and scratched it. I had a T20 bit already for unscrewing the head unit but There are a number of small screwdriver bits youll need when working on the head unit, I got a magnusson precision screwdriver kit out of my local screwfix for 13 quro or so (cant post link in comments) but if youre ordering the part from alibaba, order a precision screwdriver off there at same time so youll have it delivered when you get the new screen. You really will need this. If dont have a T20, maybe make sure any kit you buy does have it.. After you have the head unit stripped down, and new screen with ribbon strip installed, dont forget to take the yellow tape off the new screen to fix it in place. Im not even an amateur electronics guy and found this tutorial worked for me. Huge thanks to poster, have a new working screen for relatively nothing, I learned how to get under my dash and have a lovely new precision toolset. Very happy with that.

0:04 Hi, I’ve swapped the new LCD screen I. And now have touch sensitivity back but a black screen. Do you know whether it is the black or gold ribbon connector responsible for screen illumination. If it’s the gold I will give up as I did stress that. If it’s the black I have some hope that persistant wiggling might work. Thanks so much!

    • @DuncanLaw
      @DuncanLaw 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

It's the orangey gold one that works the actual screen. If you've damaged that one then try having a good look on the screen for a part number. It's likely you can find a replacement somewhere online if you can work out what the part number is. If you can't see a part number, maybe it's written underneath the (glued on) touch sensor? Since it's broken anyway, try separating the touch sensor from the screen. I don't know how strong the glue is; I was too chicken to try separating mine since the screen still worked. Heating it up a bit will likely make the glue softer. (Hot hairdryer? Oven at a low temperature?) Good luck and let us know if you find an alternative screen part number!

Atm weighing up possible basic replacement head unit for £60 & for now at least I have radio controls from memory! The cautionary tale for anyone doing this is don’t mess with the gold ribbon!

  • @greywanderer82

Thanks, saved me hundreds of dollars, almost $2k if I wanted to go through VW. A few notes: You will need T6, T7, and T20 Torx screwdrivers, the T20s take the stereo out of the car, the T7 removes the casing, and the T6 is for the circuit board. He also skips a few steps, presumably because it's hard to do them while holding a phone to record. Only one thing really stumped me for a few minutes until I figured it out: When you get the part where you are removing the circuit board/screen from the outer casing, there are clips next to the SD card readers that you have to press in order to release the board. You CAN remove the SD cards as he says, but you do not need to. Still, I found it easier to just take them out as this made accessing the clips easier for both removal and replacement. I spent in total about $25 dollars on this repair, and that cost included a $10 Torx screwdriver set. Be sure not to overtighten the screws affixing the board to the screen as this will apply pressure to the screen and give you white spots on the screen while you're using it. It's annoying, because by the time you realize you tightened them too much, you've already plugged everything back in.

It might work for awhile but factory tolerances are gone, just order a few new linear bearings, they're not that expensive at all. You could damage the rails doing it this way. Your rail will have it's model on it and so will your linear bearing block.
